Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming macOS Monterey 12.4 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new update coming three weeks after the release of macOS Monterey 12.3, which introduced support for Universal Control.

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, Universal Control in the new iPadOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 updates is not compatible with machines running macOS 12.3 or iPadOS 15.4, so Apple suggests that as a workaround, users should update their Universal Control devices to the new betas.

We don't yet know if there are any other features in macOS Monterey 12.4, but if we find anything new after installing the software, we'll update this article.

I’ll be happy with continued refinements and bug fixes (I’ve recently noticed that my hot corners keep turning off, prompting a reboot; the good news is that I no longer get kernel panics like I had in December / January).

Once we receive the last version of Monterey, I don‘t plan to touch the next annual iteration with a 30-foot pole until at least the spring of 2023. How many other people on MacRumors were forced into Monterey with the purchase of a new 14” or 16” laptop?

Universal Control

Known Issues

  • Universal Control in this release isn’t compatible with macOS 12.3 and iOS 15.4.
Workaround: Use Universal Control between macOS 12.4 beta and iOS 15.5. (91136128)
Ha I don't do betas on my Mac, so I guess this closes the door on putting this beta on my iPad ?

I'm losing patience but is it possible that Apple hasn't fixed the finder bug of windows not retaining the default size I set?
Each time I boot in, the finder windows are squashed and I have to manually resize them...no matter if I use alt or set the "use as defaults" option in the view tab...
I have been having this across 2 operative systems, 3 computers and 7 major updates...
What the hell, Apple?
As an Apple enthusiast I'm losing patience here!
A trillion fancy and bugged features added to every release and a plethora of new bugs each time, with no hope of seeing long standing bugs fixed.
I used to have a better experience on my old hackingtosh from 2014 running High Sierra with many custom made patches, than now on the shiny new apple silicon chips with much newer software.
I'm really losing pateince here.

I think out of my 15 years on Mac, Monterey is the longest I've held out on updating. Looking forward to seeing how 12.4 performs and if there are any deal breaking issues like some of the previous releases.
I haven't used Mojave and Catalina, however Big Sur & Monterey have been nothing but bugs, bugs, bugs and bugs...
High Sierra was 100 times more stable.
I first approached the mac with Snow Leopard...oh how I do miss the ancient days of "it just works"

There was a difference then: You had to pay for an OSX version, so Apple made sure you didn't pay for a buggy OS. Now it's free, so no pressure there...

Crapalina? It was a skip. Mojave is the last “good” macOS release, and even that’s saying a lot relative to Sierra.
But, alas, many things (Microsoft Office) now require Catalina (following Apple’s official “support”), so into the breech I shall go… unfortunately I have not seen any indication that Bug Sir in all its incarnations had evolved to be “better” than Crapalina, so I see no reason to go any further into the pain.

I can honestly say that Monterey has given me more issues than even Vista did.
I agree.

Anyone know if this beta has any changes that will impact or address the high CPU and overheating issue on Intel? If so, I'll load the beta. My poor MacbookPro16,1 on full-blast fans for weeks LOL

You have to resize the "New window". If you open a new window in Finder, then go to another folder and THEN resize the window, the window will be reset to the size when you opened a "New window". Basically, you have to resize the first window/folder you are opening.

Monterey doesn’t seem to run quite as smooth for me on my M1 Air as Big Sur did but maybe that’s more of a Safari thing. Will be updating to this beta as soon as I get home!
