You have to resize the "New window". If you open a new window in Finder, then go to another folder and THEN resize the window, the window will be reset to the size when you opened a "New window". Basically, you have to resize the first window/folder you are opening.

I'd just like to set a default size for new windows and have the system stick to it.

Apple really needs to stop this nonsense of releasing new major versions of macOS every year. The new features have been a total lacklustre year after year and bugs just keep getting worse. One major version once every two years would be more than sufficient and it would allow not only developers but Apple themselves to make everything actually work.

Now Apple can barely get rid of the teething problems by the time the new macOS is out and also software developers are in a constant battle trying to support the latest macOS. Apple would not only improve customer satisfaction but save a significant amount of money if they went with a 2-year update cycle with macOS.

So Tim if you are listening, maybe just skip the macOS update this summer and get Monterey working as well as Snow Leopard. Trust me, people don't need another Safari facelift or newly redesigned apps. Get the stuff you already have in tip-top shape and people will thank you. And so will the stockholders!

I think the list of “unfixable bugs” is so long and deep with no chance at ever getting fixed (because they don’t know how to fix them without creating more problems) that Buggy Software is just the name of the game these days.
It must be so demoralizing working on the MacOS and iOS teams.

Knowingly or not, you've just described every single large-scale software development, likely ever.

I’ll be happy with continued refinements and bug fixes (I’ve recently noticed that my hot corners keep turning off, prompting a reboot; the good news is that I no longer get kernel panics like I had in December / January).

Once we receive the last version of Monterey, I don‘t plan to touch the next annual iteration with a 30-foot pole until at least the spring of 2023. How many other people on MacRumors were forced into Monterey with the purchase of a new 14” or 16” laptop?
12.2.x was an abomination with the 14" M1 Max and the TS4 dock. An absolute buggy mess chock full of hard kernel panics when waking from sleep. I've never seen anything like before that on Intel thunderbolt or hackintosh with Maple Ridge TB4...I was ready to send back the TS4. But 12.3.x fixed the stability problems. Monterey has been a PITA.

Also, another bug introduced by 12.2's firmware update was my Apple Silicon laptop would stop accepting charge every 24 hours or so, and so the battery would drain to 90 percent and then charge again. But with the firmware update of 12.3.1, coupled with a reset of the SMC (left ctrl + left option + right shift + power button), no more battery drain issues while plugged in.

Here's hoping that the likely bug with maintaining a link to all RAID boxes (vs. just some) is squashed in this update. Brand new Mac Studio Ultra cannot stay connected to my 2-drive RAID purchased in 2018. Same box & same cable hooked to my Intel Macs has no issues. But then try Monterey Studio Ultra again and I'm lucky if it stays attached for 3 hours. Big external storage in RAIDs seem likely a common goal of Studio Ultra buyers (to hold lots of raw video for editing) but no luck for me.

Put the Mac to sleep and it will pretty much "eject unexpectedly" just about every time but even when I don't let it or the drive sleep, it will sometimes "eject unexpectedly" as if I pulled the cord while actively using both. For example, I was moving files from it to the Studio so neither could possibly be in a sleep state and it ejected mid-transfer more than once.

I've worked through every single option offered by others dealing with this issue. The consensus points at Monterey. I'd love for the U in USB to "just work" like it does for my old Intel Macs not running Monterey. Com'on .4 update!!!

I'm losing patience but is it possible that Apple hasn't fixed the finder bug of windows not retaining the default size I set?
Each time I boot in, the finder windows are squashed and I have to manually resize them...no matter if I use alt or set the "use as defaults" option in the view tab...
I have been having this across 2 operative systems, 3 computers and 7 major updates...
What the hell, Apple?
As an Apple enthusiast I'm losing patience here!
A trillion fancy and bugged features added to every release and a plethora of new bugs each time, with no hope of seeing long standing bugs fixed.
I used to have a better experience on my old hackingtosh from 2014 running High Sierra with many custom made patches, than now on the shiny new apple silicon chips with much newer software.
I'm really losing pateince here.
This has been happening since Catalina I believe, when apple changed the way system files are sandboxed. It definitely is annoying, but I only restart my computer after an update. I guess they figure most people don't shut down their computers anymore and it hasn't been high on their priority list.

Agreed 100%.

However, I suspect 13.0 will see iPad/macOS catalyst / SwiftUI system (and developer) apps properly appear.

If I’m right, then it would probably be sensible to keep 13.x around for 2 years & focus on making it rock solid, as it’ll be such a huge change.

You’d hope also, that Monterey is also kept patched etc in that time too for those who aren’t ‘brave’ i.e. those who need a stable system!

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming macOS Monterey 12.4 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new update coming three weeks after the release of macOS Monterey 12.3, which introduced support for Universal Control.

macOS-Monterey-2.jpg

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, Universal Control in the new iPadOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 updates is not compatible with machines running macOS 12.3 or iPadOS 15.4, so Apple suggests that as a workaround, users should update their Universal Control devices to the new betas.

We don't yet know if there are any other features in macOS Monterey 12.4, but if we find anything new after installing the software, we'll update this article.

Hope they fix the incompatibilities between Monterey and Apple's Compressor app. Didn't have any issues. Upgraded to Moneterey 10.2x and now 10.3.1 and I experience issues with Compressor like not restarting after a pause or Final Cut Pro X crashing.

I’m getting kernel panics shortly after reboot. I can’t seem to keep the system up for very long at all.
You mentioned this with 12.3b5, did you boot in safe mode to see how it operates. Any kernel panic on reboot will come up trying to send logs to Apple, did you look at the cause of the kernel panic? Do you have Safari Technology preview installed along with the new Safari with 12.4 beta? What Mac type is involved?

Also, another bug introduced by 12.2's firmware update was my Apple Silicon laptop would stop accepting charge every 24 hours or so, and so the battery would drain to 90 percent and then charge again.
That sounds like the "Optimized battery charging" feature, do you have that enabled in System Preferences > Battery? My M1 laptop does this after it’s been continuously plugged in for a couple days.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I was able to boot into safe mode, and in searching through the logs all I could find was DumpPanic as the process, but on a subsequent reboot into Safe Mode a popup window came up which showed me that Plex Media Server was the culprit. After disabling that from starting on boot my system is behaving normally now. I appreciate the assist.

Is this it?

Anyone see if it fixes the USB problems yet?

We SO need a "Snow Leopard" right about now
They should do just like Snow Leopard, the next version of the OS should be called Snow Monterey and they should not add any new features and just use the time to clean up bugs and optimize the OS for the Apple Silicon like they did with Snow Leopard in 2009.
