FYI! OD said "install the latest release build of Little Snitch, version 5.3.2. With this version we could not reproduce the crashes." The current nightly build is a different story.
5.3.2 won’t install on this latest beta for me and as you wrote the latest nightly build crashes. I love Little Snitch, so just looking forward to getting a version that works again ?. Learning for me is still: dealing with betas (OS or software plugins).. Start system in «safe mode» should issues occur. Verify that the system is stable then and remove kernel extensions and startup items one by one.

Next time for me it’s analyse before whining ??. If one can find OS bugs not triggered by 3rd party apps, I’d gladly help Apple out ?

I have version 5.3.2 running on both of my MacBook Pros with Apple M1 Max processors. Prior to installing 5.3.2, I removed everything I could find from the prior LS install. I also took one of my MacBook Pros and completely wiped the disk and did then did clean install of Monterey 12.3.1, verified functionality and then reinstalled 12.4 Beta 1. Both systems seem to be running identically with no issues.

Try to install the macos beta, then LS 5.3.2 afterwards and tell me if that works…. Installation hangs here.. nightly installs, but not 5.3.2.. If you got a trick to fix it let me know.

This has been happening since Catalina I believe, when apple changed the way system files are sandboxed. It definitely is annoying, but I only restart my computer after an update. I guess they figure most people don't shut down their computers anymore and it hasn't been high on their priority list.
I have never put any of the macs I owned (4) to sleep.
I walways turn off the computer, when I don't use it, with the shut down option below the apple on the top left.

I did exactly that on one MacBook Pro and it worked fine. No install issues for me. It might be time to wipe the system and reinstall as above.

The LS installer timed out last time… Tried a few times. And now it worked. Wtf ?. Well, no more nightlies for me. Not going to reinstall that partition. Close to clean and 1 month old. Thanks for having me try yet another time. It failed both on my Mac Mini M1 and Macbook Pro M1 Max a few days ago ?, but worked today ?

Edit: Famous last words.. Started a few programs, did some «regular use» and LS 5.3.2 crashed with the macOS beta. Not trusting that combination for now. Pre macOS 12.4 beta 1 and LS was rock stable - both nightly and release.. So macOS 12.4 beta 1 without LS is stable, with LS for me is not.. Thats with 10+ hours daily use - dev tools and browser + MS stack. So did Apple do some changes to kernel extensions and libraries they use?

KP on 12.4 latest beta. Not sure if it's LS, I was always using 5.3.2. I'll change it to nightly and see. It basically KP everytime I plugged I my dock to switch to LAN.

I still got KP with LS 5.4.

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming macOS Monterey 12.4 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new update coming three weeks after the release of macOS Monterey 12.3, which introduced support for Universal Control.

macOS-Monterey-2.jpg

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, Universal Control in the new iPadOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 updates is not compatible with machines running macOS 12.3 or iPadOS 15.4, so Apple suggests that as a workaround, users should update their Universal Control devices to the new betas.

We don't yet know if there are any other features in macOS Monterey 12.4, but if we find anything new after installing the software, we'll update this article.

Like one or two others here, I too don't even consider upgrading until Apple have ironed out some of the biggest bugs in any new macOS and other software developers have pushed out their compatibility with the latest and greatest from Apple, as a rule of thumb I usually wait 6 months or until after Easter, before even considering installing that years macOS.

Is having a new macOS on a yearly cycle to much, no I don't think so, it really comes down to you, I do know some who are still on Catalina and do leave their upgrade for two years, I did it myself skipping Catalina. I wouldn't really want to revert to not receiving an upgrade from Apple for a year or two and sometimes longer as we did in the '90s before macOSX and Mountain Lion.

LS was my issue. Just would like to give you guys a heads up that a new nightly release is out with a fix too.

Although I appreciate the speed in which Little Snitch was updated in order to partly address the issue, sadly I am still getting kernel panic crashes with Little Snitch 5.4 nightly (6250). I am not sure exactly what is causing this, but with 5.4 nightly (6250) my computer (M1 MBP 16", 2021) seems to freeze/crash when trying to enable/install ‘Berkeley Packet Filter Monitoring’. And also - even with ‘Berkeley Packet Filter Monitoring’ disabled/uninstalled, my computer tends to crash when starting Transmission 3.0 (which has ~100 actively seeding torrents, if that makes any difference...?).

When using Little Snitch 5.3.2 everything seems to work (relatively) fine, including Transmission/seeding a lot of torrents. My computer has "only" crashed 3 times today (using 12.4 Beta // Little Snitch 5.3.2). In the last few days since installing 12.4 Beta my computer must have crashed at least 50 times though. I am waiting desperately for Apple to release 12.4.1. I am praying they will address these issues in their next beta. 12.4 Beta is hands down the worst OS I have ever used in my life. It was a mistake enrolling in the beta program on my main computer

I think if Apple had a longer macOS release cycle, say once every two years or every 3 years, then they wouldn't be able to cut off several Mac models every year. Many peope who had the old 2014 iMac for example can't upgrade to Monterey. And apple stopped supporting target display mode, so those machines can't even be repurposed into a monitor. Apple also doesn't necessarily release patches for 0-day vulnerabilities for older OSes in a timely fashion. See: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/04/06/apple-vulnerabilities-big-sur-catalina/

So if you're stuck on Big Sur or Catalina or even Mojave, you may be running an OS with 0-day vulnerabilities that are being actively exploited in the wild. This is a strong incentive for people to upgrade to the latest and greatest, and if your Mac can't update to the latest OS, then you're probably going to go out and spend some money on a new Mac. There is of course open core patcher but most people don't know about it, and some that do don't want to use it for fear of malware, which I think is ludicrous, but hey.

I hate to be cynical, but Apple's policies, whether intentional or not, create an incentive for people to toss out the old (but still perfectly capable machines) and buy the new.

I'm stuck in the same situation. It appears when I connect a certain Overlay network application, the network adapter causes a kernel panic.

I'll try to downgrade LS but I doubt it's the problem.
