Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I was able to boot into safe mode, and in searching through the logs all I could find was DumpPanic as the process, but on a subsequent reboot into Safe Mode a popup window came up which showed me that Plex Media Server was the culprit. After disabling that from starting on boot my system is behaving normally now. I appreciate the assist.
Great to know! I just installed the Plex Media Server app today and had a KP when I rebooted.

[M1 Max + 12.4 Beta]

Still, coreaudiod process does not solve the problem of over-occupying more than 15% of the cpu.

I can assure you it doesn't.
And that happened on my Mac Mini M1 16GB, the Mbpro 16" M1 Max I tested in december and the current Mac Studio I'm testing; all both on Big Sur and Monterey.
I didn't remember having this problem on my old Hackingtosh on High Sierra.

That sounds like the "Optimized battery charging" feature, do you have that enabled in System Preferences > Battery? My M1 laptop does this after it’s been continuously plugged in for a couple days.
It still did it even if that option was ticked off in settings. On my Intel Mac, disabling optimized battery charging disabled it completely, but on Apple silicon, after 12.2 it appeared that the firmware had a mind of its own.

I'm seeing some massive differences in smoothness and performance with this version... for the better that is! It's feels like it's finally back to what I was seeing in Big Sur and that's no small feat! All the little lags I was seeing in Monterey, especially in Safari are starting to get quashed finally and I love to see it.

..... Trust me, people don't need another Safari facelift or newly redesigned apps...

I different mindset's required. Put ALL Apple apps, including Safari in the Appstore and update them that way.

That way, the release of the OS is exactly that and if an app needs an update it can get one whenever. If Apple still wants to bundle an initial version with the hardware, fine.

Do I have to wait for a new version of MacOS before I get a new Chrome? Plex? Vuescan? and so on... NO

Do I have to update them at the same time as macOS updates... NO

Also, another bug introduced by 12.2's firmware update was my Apple Silicon laptop would stop accepting charge every 24 hours or so, and so the battery would drain to 90 percent and then charge again. But with the firmware update of 12.3.1, coupled with a reset of the SMC (left ctrl + left option + right shift + power button), no more battery drain issues while plugged in.

Are you talking about optimized battery charging? It tries to predict usage and delay 'topping off' the battery. You can control that in energy settings under 'battery'

It is more likely something going on with the kernel (like the network behaving in a way that the drivers did not expect, or even things like a failing connection to the wifi chip).

I personally would get a system diagnostic going rather than waiting to see if new OS releases fix an issue that only I seem to be having.

Safari can and does get updated independent from the underlying macOS release. Over the last three years they have averaged at least a minor update every six weeks.

Even if not, a faster release cadence does not mean you get any additional features. Safari Tech Preview is outside the OS channel completely, has about 3x the number of releases, and contains no additional functionality beyond the next release of Safari proper.

As a general rule however, Apple does use the latest OS functionality in their apps and will push for functionality in their apps to be part of the operating system - first for internal use and then over time as public api. That means most system apps do not get independently updated, but rely on a specific OS version.

You'll notice while you have system apps on the iOS App Store list, you'll never get an update notification for them - because they only get shipped as part of the OS, and indeed would often not work on a different OS version if they were somehow separately packaged.

Chrome is crashing this beta for me. Every single time, anyone else ?
I’m having the same issue in firefox. I tried decreasing the max frame rate from 120 hz to 80 and it helps a bit but still seems to crash. Not sure what they tweaked but this has been the worst beta in a while

I can honestly say that Monterey has given me more issues than even Vista did.
I totally remember Vista, and this comment is rather surprising to hear, but yes, Apple has an obvious QA problem in the Software and Cloud departments.

I hope they fix the slowness of external drives showing up in Finder. Takes a good minute sometimes.
This has been my complaint as well. I’ve got a few external drives that take upwards of 4-5 minutes to mount after a reboot or log off/on. Where as I can plug these same drives into my older 2015 MBP on Catalina and they mount almost immediately.

After the update to 12.2, it didn't matter if that setting was on or not, the Apple Silicon machine would stop accepting charge once every 24 hours or so, battery would decline to 90 percent, and then charge back to 100. This didn't happen on 12.0.1 or 12.1. I could interrupt it if I reset the SMC while the machine was off (left ctrl + option + right shift + power button). But this meant needing to shutdown every day to reset the SMC ... annoying.

I don't want a faster cadence, I want software that just once in a while actually works rather than being rushed out of the door to meet the deadline for an OS release

For example, since when is Music a "System App". It's latest release, in 12.3.1 is utterly appalling:
  • The update as usual 'forgets' where the library is, resetting it to the boot drive
  • There's no control whatsoever on the volume when playing back a music video, other than to use the system wide controls - see other threads here
  • Have a playlist that mixes music videos and audio tracks and it'll stop playing when it reaches the end of a video and the next track is audio
  • Minimise and restore a video window and at some random point the mouse completely disappears - for all apps
  • And so on...
Should never have been released in the state it's in.

Anyone know if the resolution weirdness with 49" external monitor (introduced in 12.2) is fixed?

Seems to me that the idea of a software crash should be ancient history by now. We are nowhere near as technologically advanced as we like to think we are. It's 2022, and we're compaing this OS to Vista? ReALLY? depressing as hell...

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming macOS Monterey 12.4 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new update coming three weeks after the release of macOS Monterey 12.3, which introduced support for Universal Control.

macOS-Monterey-2.jpg

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, Universal Control in the new iPadOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 updates is not compatible with machines running macOS 12.3 or iPadOS 15.4, so Apple suggests that as a workaround, users should update their Universal Control devices to the new betas.

We don't yet know if there are any other features in macOS Monterey 12.4, but if we find anything new after installing the software, we'll update this article.
