Will installing this result in potential issues tomorrow with the new phones and porting things over to it?
Cannot obviously be totally certain, but there is a release I believe of iOS 18.1 beta for the 16 devices.

If you're going to restore a backup as you are already running 18.1, then you'll need to install the beta on your new phone prior to restoring. Likely means setting up as new first, installing the beta, then erase all contents and settings. Set up again. Restore.

I believe if you load the new phone with a backup from iCloud, it should be fine but if you're doing it from a backup on your computer, it has to be the same OS and it would not be.

Last time I did it not even iCloud allowed you to transfer a backup to a device with a lower OS version but maybe that changed?

Kind of embarrassing how the headlining feature of the new iPhones is not shipping with the new iPhones.

Just wait until you have to explain that to the normies who saw the new Siri glow and other marketing.
That's the reason why I feel the .1 releases will come soon.
Anyway I'm not sure how many people will get an iPhone 16 series specifically for these features.

If you're doing iCloud Backups, just turn it off before installing a beta. Then your beta installation won't back up to iCloud, and if you get a new phone you can just restore the iCloud backup since it's from the release version.

I generally leave iCloud Backups off when I'm running a beta, and back up to my Mac.

iOS18 changed the quick action to convert images on device to other formats. A 48MP .dng to HEIF in "original size" is now only 12MP instead of 48MP. Is that fixed in 18.1 beta?

I think I'll just wait til my 16 arrives tomorrow and try out the beta. Was just going to do the Cloud backup transfer to the new phone so last thing I want to do is mess everything up.

@crm3 & others: it is the same with the developer beta. Same error messages for some people like me. Apple support does not know how to help. Hope apple recognizes this problem but as they release the public beta it seems they are not aware of it or ignore it.

Configure the new iPhone without transferring any data, upgrade to the beta > factory reset and then it will allow you to restore from iCloud.
Not necessarily. Setup the new phone as a new device under your Apple ID, update the 16PM to the public beta, reset all settings, then sign in again and choose restore from backup.

You don't need to do it that way anymore. The new phone will see that you've been using a beta and offer to upgrade to the beta before continuing the setup/transfer process. It has been that way for a few years now.

Found the answer to the installation issue a few seconds ago. @edon postet in the developer thread that:

If you’re having trouble installing macOS 15.1 Beta 4, try turning off the Find My Mac and Network features. That might just fix the issue for you!

Thanks to him I was able to install macOS 15.1 beta. Big applause from my side to him.

Unable to install. Installation Failed. Same thing is happening for many people with the 15.1, Beta 4 DEVELOPER download, too. Supposedly Apple is aware? 🤷🏻‍♂️

How much "explaining" do you do to people about your phone? I find myself using my devices, not talking about them. I have better things to discuss with family and friends.

I’m on dev beta 4. If I switch to the public beta channel will I then start with public beta 2 when it comes out? Or I can just stay on dev beta to RC and then turn off beta? Both the same?

Hogwash. Why do you think you’re entitled to new features?
Your 14 will continue to do everything the same as the day you bought it, with all features that were announced/available and you’re getting new features too, eg password app, RCS support just to name a couple
Well, wasn’t that the big selling point of Apple compared to google? Now google pixel 9 pro comes with 7 years software support. How time makes changes 🫢

It seems that the iOS and iPadOS updates are updating without any major issues. I will still probably wait a couple of more days, but I think I’ll hold off on updating my Macs for a while.

I do Android development and need a new test phone. I was going to buy a cheaper Android phone but the Pixel 8a will get Android updates until spring of 2031. It’s great to get a specific date. (iPhone will remain my daily driver, hence why I’ll go with 8a over the 9)

Sucks for all of us with unsupported phones. We're probably going to get next to nothing new for the foreseeable future as everything they release is going to be Apple Intelligence based. Just watch as every new feature going forwards is going to "require" Apple Intelligence.

It's a pretty **** move to all of us that purchased 14 Pros. I would have held off another year if I would have known the phone was going to essentially be cut off after two years.
Honestly, most of the Apple Intelligence features will be released throughout the next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if some don’t show up until the 17’s are released. If you update every 3 years, you’ll only be “left out” for a couple months.
Very weird. Launch day tomorrow so why isn’t an RC out yet? Crazy.
The new phones are shipping with iOS 18.0, release candidate came out for that one already. iOS 18.1 is “expected” to be released in October, so it’s still in beta.

Absolutely, unless you update your new phone to the iOS 18.1 beta first. Setup as new phone, enroll new phone in the beta program, update new phone to 18.1, then reset all settings. Go through the setup like normal (restore from backup) after 18.1 is on the new phone. IIRC the same thing happened when the iPhone 13 was released. They pushed out an update before the phones were in customers hands, so beta users had to do the same thing then.
