I’m on dev beta 4. If I switch to the public beta channel will I then start with public beta 2 when it comes out? Or I can just stay on dev beta to RC and then turn off beta? Both the same?

If you are already on the dev beta, there is not much point going with the public one. Most of the time the PB is exactly the same build as the DB, just coming out several hours or days after the DB.

Question: will the AI features in 18.1 Beta work outside of the US? Canada is not expected to get the features until end of year officially, but is this a way to get access to them beforehand?

Kind of embarrassing how the headlining feature of the new iPhones is not shipping with the new iPhones.

Just wait until you have to explain that to the normies who saw the new Siri glow and other marketing.

I appreciate that Apple is taking their time to get AI right.

But I do admit to being confused by the lack of glow for Siri after updating my 13 Pro. Is the Glow only going to show up on "supported" devices, and the rest of us still get the Siri "orb"?

I was immensely impressed by how quickly iOS 18 installed. It was done in 15 minutes. I was like "It's done?"

Running great.

right but I want to switch off beta when 18.1 hits so I’m wondering the best ‘off ramp’ for that

Sucks for all of us with unsupported phones. We're probably going to get next to nothing new for the foreseeable future as everything they release is going to be Apple Intelligence based. Just watch as every new feature going forwards is going to "require" Apple Intelligence.

It's a pretty **** move to all of us that purchased 14 Pros. I would have held off another year if I would have known the phone was going to essentially be cut off after two years.

You bought your phone based on its feature set at the time. If you base your decision on what software will be available in 2 years, the only person to blame is the one staring back at you in the mirror.

Apple Intelligence is one of the few "heavy" features that requires minimum hardware specs to run well. Would it run on your 14 Pro? Probably, but with compromises that would fuel even more complaints.

No matter what phone you buy, or have bought the last 5 years or so, Apple has screwed you. They have mastered the slow drip of advancement and calculated withholding of technology to force upgrades, even if it’s purely a software tweak.

Its odd - under Siri settings on my M4 iPad, after the update, I had an option to "join a waitlist for Apple AI" So I guess even running 18.1 does not guarantee you access to Apple AI

I just installed the iPadOS 18.1 public beta on my M4 13’ 2024 iPad Pro 256gb without issues.
That’s also coming from iPadOS 17.7
Glad it worked out, was kinda bummed when I tried to set it up earlier from my old iPad 11’ pro with iPadOS 18 release as the new iPad needed iPadOS 18 to be installed but couldn’t due to them pulling the software due to bugs. I just ended up setting the iPad up as new, manually installed all apps logging into those I use, then upgrading to the public beta this morning.

Can't upgrade hardware over the air.

You don't need to do it that way anymore. The new phone will see that you've been using a beta and offer to upgrade to the beta before continuing the setup/transfer process. It has been that way for a few years now.
The worst was the X. The new software wasn’t available for that phone at launch. I remember at the Apple Store they had to connect my phone to iTunes, downgrade it, do a backup and then set up the new phone from that backup. What a pain.

Hogwash. Why do you think you’re entitled to new features?
Your 14 will continue to do everything the same as the day you bought it, with all features that were announced/available and you’re getting new features too, eg password app, RCS support just to name a couple
And if they gave the features and it destroyed the battery due to the increased power requirements to run the LLMs and other AI processing they would complain that it too is just an upgrade tactic.

I can't get my MBP M2 to update; it just keeps falling. Any ideas?
Same. M2 MacBook Air. Enter password like usual, then a second little box pops up in the center of the screen asking for password again. After entering 2nd time, the progress bar goes back and forth, then an error message comes up saying it can't be installed. Closing all user sessions after closing all applications, and then restarting doesn't bring success. Never saw this before. Also, I tried to find where the update is hiding, as I assume it is corrupt, and can't find it. Used to be in Library/Appications/something, but I find nothing.

Can somebody help?

I will set it to update overnight, and maybe that will work, but I'd appreciate any input in case it does not.

Thank you in advance.

UPDATE: the remedy suggested in comment #37 solved it. TLDR: turn of find my Mac. Restart. Install update. Turn FMM back on. Thanks to #37 author for helping by sharing knowledge!

i mean, it will continue to do exactly what you paid for when it was advertised. and it will continue to do so very well for quite a while as smartphones have become pretty powerful.

declaring that apple made an [expletive] move in not disclosing their future plans is just ignorant thinking. companies have no obligation to disclose R&D of unreleased/unannounced products and endeavours before they're ready to deploy. you havent been conned into making a purchase of something you didnt want, and it's not like what you have will be taken away from you.

"i'd have waited if i knew blah would come up" then just dont buy new tech. there's *always* a reason to not buy the current thing by that thinking.

"if i would have known the phone was going to essentially be cut off after two years"

that is patently absurd, and you're just whining at that point. again, it's going to continue doing exactly what it was setup to do, it wont be doing any of the advanced AI features you were never promised in the first place. and apparently you were happy enough with it to get the device as it was advertised to you at the time of purchase. knowing people that are still on iPhone 8's (!!!) happily to this day, i'm pretty sure your iPhone 14 is going to work fantastically for quite some time.

no, it will not take advantage of some new upcoming features. that is quite literally common practice, and something that happens every single year. your phone was bound to *not* do something

Apple is a profit company, they don’t owe it to the people not willing to upgrade because people are stubborn

Companies are not owed a pass for greed because they a for-profit.

..but I get why apple isn't bringing it to the 14.
