Why so many Betas? Maybe they want to get it right. There were Betas when Steve was alive. Enjoy your G4.

Thanks! I completely agree with you!
You people are seriously not understanding his sarcasm? You actually believe he's seriously going to go get his "Bull cassette cartridge"? I mean, this one didn't even need a "/s"...

Patch updates do block-level changes (i.e., intra-file changes) in files. That is, they replaces portions of files with changed portions. This works fine if the old versions of the files are exactly the expected ones; it fails if it applies changes to the wrong versions.

Delta updates work similarly, but on a file level. They replace files that have changed with new versions of the files, but ship with the entire file each.

Combo updates, finally, contain the cumulative set of changes since the major release (i.e., 10.11.0 Yosemite).

Thus, patch updates are the smallest, and combo updates are the safest. If you're going for safe in a beta, though, you may be doing it wrong. Software Update / App Store will automatically try and pick a suitable version — if you're going from 10.11.1 straight to 10.11.4, you'll get a combo update, and otherwise, you may get a delta or patch update. With betas, you should follow changes closely to assist in beta testing, so the patch update is oftentimes appropriate.

These updates are killing me. I have iMac late 2012 model, and upgraded from 10.11 to 10.11.4. It didn't solve the problem but gotten worse. Spinning beach balls every minute, and applications are not launching. OK, I'll wait till the Spotlight index my computer. The next day--same problem--rebooted to Safe Mode because I can't open the applications. Disappointed... until I downgraded to Yosemite 10.10.5 instead.

Apple's "Think Different" trademark should be "Think Crazy." I'll wait for 10.12.

I'm out of the beta game for now. The only reason I got involved was in hope of fixes (primarily for external USB devices over Thunderbolt) and it's pretty clear they are not coming.

I wonder if this update will actually fix the issue where Safari freezes the entire system... its only been present since 10.11.0...

Aaaahhh that why the house iMac is acting funny (aka freezing like there is no tomorrow) sometimes... especially when I'm at the last step of an online purchase (but I think this part is more related to karma than to Safari )

It's annoying and near all windows only get enlarged slightly. Please explain why.

The windows will only enlarge so that the files listed are viewable. Therefore, a workaround is to always enlarge whilst in say, Applications. That way the enlarging will encompass the whole height of the screen, given that the applications list is more often than not the longest list.

I like the way Apple developed their software. Beta's is een prelaunch. Be glad that a company show their possibilities. With so many problems on security. As user you can choose to take part of the beta program. If you don't like it. Then you don't. But do not complain in both circumstances. The only disadvantage is the a beta is a full download. But i don't complain.

I admit I didn't get the sarcasm when I replied, but 2 minutes before I was on the iOS beta thread, where there is a public crucifixion of developers going on.

Sorry to be unfair :)

HD or SSD, I ask because that could be the problem, OS X is much better on an SSD nowadays.

Perhaps some extra RAM or an SSD?

I might be drunk, but I swear 10.11.4 finally fixed the WiFi issues I've been having ever since I switched from my plastic iMac to one of the metal (circa 2009) ones and put up with through all the OS updates starting with Yosemite.

I hope that they've fixed the bluetooth... It's a mess ever since Yosemite.

No issues for me, really. I use a PS3 controller via Bluetooth to steer my Mac (and do some gaming – quit nice to play HearthStone with it on a 50" TV) using ControllerMate, and at least that works well. What issues are you having?

Not sure if it has been mentioned but I notice that the Public Beta of OSX 10.11.5 is currently available in App store.

I see a lot of crankiness, but in my opinion El Capitan has been the best release since 10.8 in terms of stability. It was also the most seamless update I've ever done. I used to do clean installs whenever a new version of the OS was released, but since they've gone to a yearly release cycle that's way too much work. El Capitan was the first time I haven't had any sort of issue, even on some of my odder stuff like Homebrew just worked.

Bluetooth had a lot of issues until I blew away all the configs and started fresh. I think those configs came over from either Mountain Lion or Mavericks, but it's been great since.

Steve also didn't want an App store for the iPhone. Originally.

He was not always right, you know.

Think you missed the sarcasm...

No change in Disk Utility. Why can't they manage to allow resizing the window or the sidebar, there are even arrows for that in the sidebar since forever....

Because it's not a priority for developer resources.

You can do anything your want in disk utility from the terminal.

I'm rather amused. The story was completely lacking in details but yet I see 121 comments beneath it. Now that is what "LOL" means!

OS-X-El-Capitan-Logo.jpg
Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan update to developers for testing purposes, just over two weeks after releasing OS X 10.11.4, the fourth major update to the OS X 10.11 operating system.

The new OS X 10.11.5 update can be downloaded through the Apple Developer Center.

We don't yet know what improvements the fifth update to OS X El Capitan will bring, but like prior updates, it's likely to focus on security enhancements, performance improvements, and bug fixes to address issues that have been discovered since the release of OS X 10.11.4. We'll update this post with any changes that are discovered in the beta.

It was also the most seamless update I've ever done.
I think that's largely because we have no clue what's getting updated since 10.11.1 or so ;) It might be breaking some rarely used routines with every single update but we have to hunt for the Easter eggs to find out.

Anybody agrees that what was done with Disk Utility is the first step on the road to iOS-ify OS X? We'll end up with half a system but copying files will be possible with Terminal. :p
