Something quite strange happens with Airplay on iPhone 4. If you "link" your phone to stream audio in the iPod app. Then quit but leave the Airplay button active. Your phones audio still streams over to the Apple TV or Airport Express etc.

For example, when you type the "clicks" are streamed over, and someone just called me and the phone rang via the Airport Express connected to my Hi-Fi. The same happens for New text messages, New Emails.

Feature or Bug? what do we think?

Hope it's a feature cause like it!

I always put my phone in the dock, either to sync, charge or just to know where it is and sometimes i can't ear an alert or incoming call when i'm outside or on the other side of the house :)

Me and I thought about it and think its a bug :)

If its a feature I really hope there is some kind of standardised volume put in place for the streaming. For example, If i run audio to my Airport Express the volume slider needs to be around half way. If I run to my sound system connected to my Apple TV It needs to be around quarter volume. When the phone rang and Streamed the ringtone to my Apple TV. The slider was near half way and Marimba shook my house scaring the **** out of me.

I have heard a reason and if it's true I actually fully support Apple in this one.

You may think it's crazy, but think about this.

If they did allow iPhone4 960x640 apps to run at full res on the iPad, yes, it would allow many new apps to run at almost full iPad screen which you would think is a good thing.

But. It would start to make developers lazy and not bother with an iPad version at 1024x768 as their one iPhone4 app if almost full screen so it will do.
If that is the reason, iPad wouldn't scale 480x320 iPhone apps to 960x640 either.

I'm glad this sorts out vlc, air video and iPlayer.
On a slight tangent......
Its getting a bit old, people moaning about non developers running a beta OS. Im no developer but I like to mess with beta software for fun. I know there's no garantees it will work properly but its nice to toy with some new features.
If a non dev asks apple for help with a beta OS they will tell him or her where to go, but forums like this should be the place where people like that can get help. I appreciate there are some legal issues, but I think with common sense we can help people without pissing off Apple.

I would like to see volume control while using the Apple TV via the remote. It can be changed in itunes and using the ipad volume controls so I don't know why the streamed Netflix, Youtube, Podcast volume can't be adjusted unless I am not knowing how to change it on the remote.

Cooliris Discover still doesn't work, and paid for iBooks won't load. Apart from those two issues (which are likely to be app bugs rather than core os bugs), everything else seems to be working fine at the moment. My battery does seem to be draining at an alarming rate, though...

According to 9to5, AirPlay is gone from the YouTube app. Content providers are so obnoxious. I'm sure YouTube won't be the last provider to prevent AirPlay in their apps.

I'm fairly certain that Apple writes that YouTube app. I don't think you will see app developers delivering iOS 4.2 apps in the app store until iOS 4.2 is ready. I heard the AirPlay button was ALSO missing from the "Videos" app. I'm guessing they will re-enable that feature once the have the update ready for the AppleTV.

The Airplay button for the iPod app only appears once the iPad has discovered devicesvthatvit can stream to. As there are no devices that will allow video to be air played to them yet (afaik) it could be just that that is causing the button to be not there.

I'd rather they'd just allow custom SMS ringtones than feed us more crap ones. Performance enhancements are welcomed though.

I think the new SMS tones might well be a sign that they'll do just that.
Else, why keep a separate list for the new ones. And, yeah, most of them are crap...

Does the Remote.app now work with iTunes 10.1 Beta 2? Previously, it had problems with Beta 1.

Yeah this has REALLY annoyed me. I have been watching a great deal of different content on the Apple TV and constantly have to change the volume. And I have yet to figure out how to change the volume on the Apple TV itself. I always have to change the volume on my receiver instead. This is pretty annoying having to use a separate remote every time.

Was the prior Apple TV & remote able to control volume?

I wonder if Apple is still being stupid about not allowing "Retina" apps to run at full resolution on the iPad.

Why not allow this? 1024x768 will run 960x640 apps just fine. No reason to drop back to 480x320 and upscale.

I would absolutely hate this idea because I think that will encourage more developers to be satisfied with just releasing iPhone versions of their apps. Then we end up getting more half done apps on the iPad rather than apps that were specifically designed to maximize its resolution.

The reason more developers haven't made iPad apps is that it's a small market right now. Only a few million out there, compared to like 100 million iPhone-sized devices

Netflix on Beta 3 on iPad

Does the Netflix app work with Beta 3 on the iPad? I was reading that several people were having trouble with it in Beta 2.
