Apple today seeded iPhone developers with iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3, termed Build 7C116a. Apple also released a new version of the iPhone SDK 3.1, Beta 3 (Build 9M2808). Both downloads are available to registered developers through Apple's iPhone Dev Center.

Apple seeded the previous beta nearly two weeks ago, and it remains to be seen what new changes are present in the third beta version.

Apple is reportedly relying on new developer tools present in iPhone OS 3.1 to deploy augmented reality applications that are capable of overlaying live video from the iPhone's camera with real-time data.

Hopefully this means Google Sky Map will be just around the corner. I've got an app called Pocket Universe which works well with the compass and accelerometer, but it's got its own map of the sky so nothing is really "augmented." I believe that Google Sky Map actually uses an Android phone's camera.

I wish I hadn't updated to the beta OSes, but I'm glad that the high-pitch noise issue during video capture and voice memo recording was resolved in Beta 2.

I didn't realize Beta 2 will expire tomorrow, so I guess we're forced to update anyway.

Enough with the Beta's we need 3.1. I have a picture that needs to be sent through MMS :D

Talk to AT&T! Apple will just keep fine tuning 3.1 until AT&T is ready for them to release it and activate MMS and tethering finally.

I hope this really takes off. I think it'd be cool if they used it for other things than finding subways, etc... Like maybe pointing it up and it telling you constellation names and stuff like that. Should be some interesting stuff coming our way.

Can't wait to try it out!

I hope they fixed the graphics and performance issues I've been having.

I have 3 things that they need to fix but I don't know if it's apple or At&T.

1. Turn on MMS for users.
2. When receiving TxT message turn off who they are from. Like it the old way when it just said "New Text Message"
3. Have video for Iphone 3g users...

That's all I ask.

1 - SMM works elsewhere (Europe etc) - its an ATT thing.
2 - works that way on 3.1 for me
3 - never going to happen. Thats a 3GS feature only.

Number 3 isn't happening, you can forget it. But as a play on number 2, I would like to have the option to have text messages show up as a badge instead of a notification. It would also be nice to have the ability to tweak each system sound individually. In other words, I want the text message sound at one level, ringer at another and VM at another. Doubt it will happen though.....

Sorry if this may sound all "n00b-ish" but what is "New Feature in iPhone OS 3.1: Instruments over Wi-Fi "

Would be greatful for some enlightenment

Instruments is a tool for developers to benchmark their application, memory leaks, etc.

Here is what it is (its for developers)

New Feature in iPhone OS 3.1: Instruments over Wi-Fi

As of iPhone OS SDK 3.1, it is now possible to connect to your developer devices from Instruments (on your Leopard or Snow Leopard OS X machine) using Wi-Fi rather than the USB tether. The Wi-Fi connection is 100% fully featured and supports all of the instrumentation you would normally get over the tether. It is intended for use by developers who need to attach other USB devices to their iPhone OS–based device while doing their performance analysis. The feature may also be used in situations where having the USB tether is simply impractical or inconvenient.

If you do not need to attach other USB devices, the USB connection is still preferred for general usage. The Wi-Fi connection is slower than the USB connection and requires more power from the device to accommodate the heavy Wi-Fi traffic that can come from Instruments. As a result, using the Wi-Fi connection will drain the device's battery more rapidly than other scenarios. In addition, you cannot install applications on your device from Xcode over Wi-Fi, nor can you debug them over Wi-Fi using Xcode. You must still use the USB tether to connect to the device using Xcode.

To use this Instruments feature, both your Macintosh computer and your iPhone OS device must have Wi-Fi enabled and must be connected to the same Wi-Fi access point. This access point must be enabled for Bonjour services. Once these conditions are met, you may establish a Wi-Fi connection using the steps described in the following sections.
