Oh, and the startup time is way too long. And we should have a button to disable the startup sound for good. Whatever sound setting your mac was on when it went to sleep.

Holding a button on startup should suffice as an option to mute it, the sound is awful in class and I don't always remember to turn it off on mute.

Updated Retail Leopard Boxes?

Does anyone have real knowledge regarding Apple's current policy of updating the Leopard Retail Box inventory stream?

If not, is there any indication that 10.5.3 would be an updated Retail Box version as Apple did for Tiger? :)

It would be a risky update pain to start from scratch (10.5.0) on new installations!

DIXIE

DIXIE

We're purchased Leopard last month at work and it was boxed as 10.5.1 not sure what the schedule for updating the retail version is, but I assume as soon as the update is released they start pressing that version into retail.

Did that help, or was I talking out of an orfice?

Indeed !

My (and many others') major issue with excel windows freezing my Macs graphics (only solved by a hard reboot) is not listed. The freeze is caused by leopard's graphics update after 10.5.2 and has clearly been pointed out as Apple's fault. Fix this Apple, it is unacceptable.

Been clearly pointed out by who? If it wasn't a MS Office developer or MacOS X developer that pointed this out, then it is pure conjecture. Bugs can go unnoticed in software for several releases due to the memory mapping, unused system calls, etc. and then are exposed after an update. It's not always correct to assume the last action (the update) caused the problem.

I'd like to see ONE GLARING FLUB FIXED...

The ability to click on a folder in the dock and, ummm, it just frikkin OPENS!

DUH!!!!

Sure I love all the other dock options, but the most OBVIOUS ONE is NOT an OPTION!

This is BEYOND STUPID and would make for a great Microsoft Vista commercial if MS had any cajones or Vista was any good.

Just fix it Apple so people will once and for all stop complaining about Leopard's DOCK!

OH, and ONE MORE THING... MAKE SAFARI BLOCK POP-UP WINDOWS!!!!
Yeah, it's supposed to already, but that's like false advertising because it does NOT work on any of my Macs with a variety of websites.

Thank you.

Nah, you can't do that. That's the sound to which everyone in the library turns to you with the typical "Ah, he's one of them"-look in their eyes! I enjoy that! :p

i was really looking forward to this update, but leopard is finally running just the way i want it to, adium was causing graphical errors, but i started using msn and everything is wicked fast, im gonna wait a bit before making the jump.

All you have to do is hit the MUTE key on your keyboard before shutting your Mac down and I'm pretty sure it will be silent on the next start.

At least my Macs always are, but they are all PowerPC. Is this an Intel-only issue?

Not all updates get made into the retail version. If you look at Tiger there was 10.4.0, 10.4.3 and 10.4.6.

Now looking at Leopard there are 10.5.0 and 10.5.1, they skipped 10.5.2 which was reported at the time to be a pretty major fix and now with 10.5.3 adding over 200 fixes to that list as well would suggest that they will release 10.5.3 a retail disc. Although that is just conjecture.

The update process is easy, I always make sure to download the combo update.

Official thread, where the MS guys visit.

As a matter of fact, I worked with Microsoft on pinpointing this exact bug. However, they can't do much about it.

Edit: if you're not satisfied with that thread, just have a look at the Apple support forums, enough evidence there...

The volume has to have Journaling turned on and you have to hit the (+) button in order to add a new partition because if you use the drop-down menu to choose how many partitions you want, it will ask you to erase the drive..... but, if you hit the plus icon, it will not ask you to erase the drive, you just have to make sure Journaling is turned on (I believe you can do it from the File menu).

I believe Journaling is turned on, the option to turn it on is grayed out anyway so if it's not I'd probably have to check if it is and maybe turn it on via Terminal. Otherwise I do use the plus button, I have tried it from my Leopard disc, I have tried disabling hibernation first and making sure all my files of 1GB or larger were not on my main HDD (which was easy since I moved my home folder to a backup disk and pointed my user account to that to use as it's home folder until I can get Disk Utility to partition my main HDD, so I could just delete my home directory on my Mac), and for now I'm going to have to give up since I'm going to need my Macbook today and I'd rather not have a Firewire drive attached to it all day.

Thanks though.

Sebastian

They have got to add support for folders in the Applications chooser when adding keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences. Every time I want to add a shortcut to Pages, I move it out of the iWork folder, add a shortcut, and move it back into the folder.

What about the wireless issues? I have both a MBP and Mac Mini running on 10.5.2 and both of them keep disconnecting from the wireless network every couple of minutes or so. It's certainly not the hardware as both my PC's and my Boot Camp parition maintain an connection just fine.

To un-gray-out the "Enable Journaling" option, you must hold down the Option key... sorry. Hold down option while clicking the File Menu and Enable Journaling should be lit up now. I hope this works. I had to do this the other day, that's why I am explaining all of this... I would hate to see someone go through the same struggle that I went through... hehe.

Edit, you also have to be clicked on a partition and not on the top level drive itself.

...
But no sleep issue, airport issue, DVD+4GB KP issue etc. Maybe i should keep my macbook and not sell it after all since its issue free...

...
Waiting for DVD Player + 4 GB fix but new MacBooks work as well...

cant wait! hopefully they fix the kernel panic on running dvd player with 4gb ram macbook.

It is a bug that affects the x3100 drivers + 4GB + SR. So basically yes.

On second thought i think i spoke too soon. I just tested my BlackBook SR again with a DVD and it the thing hadn't even started playing when i got the good ol KP, which is weird cos i never had this issue until now. Sigh...i shall be getting rid of this thing after all

lets compare..

10.5.2 was a big step in the right direction. I think with 10.5.3 we could reach the stability of Tiger.
My favourite 10.5.3 bug:
After 20 seconds, when I closed the lid of my MBP, it wakes up magically and then goes back to sleep... :(

to my fav.. widgets remain on desktop like apps. Or gadgets (yuck)
they don't work. they are not moved by expose'. and they remain on top. And do not go away after a restart.
have to delete the widget and install again.

We aren't making it up, it is a known bug

It would also be nice if they fixed the fact that custom keyboard shortcuts through System Preferences mysteriously vanish after a few days, but that has existed ever since they introduced custom shortcuts - Panther?

they've never really worked for me. i can see the shortcut i have made. but it never works. for any app. anywhere.

excel is actually a piece of junk. i really prefer numbers to excel. yes, 08.
i mean, even the scrolling is cumbersome on excel. plus whole another issue with keyboard shortcuts for office.
bah!

Hmm, I only have the option to Disable Journaling so it looks like it's enabled.

Lol...i'm not saying you were. Speaking of which, i just tried again now and its playing fine. In fact its playing as i type this with no issues. Go figure. I guess it only works when it wants to
