Yes exactly. Well, they don't send it out, they make it available for download on a special site with a password, but same thing.

And as well as testing the OS, it gives developers of third party apps such as Transmission or Delicious Library a chance to pre-test their apps with what will be the new version of OS X and make any changes if necessary for continued compatibility.

Thanks!

im another who would rather see an integrated grey disc or retail 10.5.3 box- to me,
10.5.0 was built kinda half-assed, with a crumbling foundation-the updates are just building upon that crumbling foundation patch a hole here, patch a hole there, overwrite everywhere;

A 10.5.3 disc would have had 10.5 tweaked from within (more time) and assembled as one working unit-not a bunch of -hope-it-works patches and overwriting...piled one on top of the other
My assumption would be a stabler install (plus youre less likely to have to go through the torture of updating i-this or-i-that, QT iTunes, java, yada yada)

Also, does REPAIRING PERMISSIONS still take ages?-I can usually do it in 10 seconds on my iMac

Indeed !

My (and many others') major issue with excel windows freezing my Macs graphics (only solved by a hard reboot) is not listed. The freeze is caused by leopard's graphics update after 10.5.2 and has clearly been pointed out as Apple's fault. Fix this Apple, it is unacceptable.

Yup. That graphics update has caused no end of trouble. I have the Macbook Pro/Front Row problem where long file names causes OSX to lock up, requiring a cold restart to clear. I would settle for an uninstaller as I had no problems before that wretched update.

Been clearly pointed out by who? If it wasn't a MS Office developer or MacOS X developer that pointed this out, then it is pure conjecture. Bugs can go unnoticed in software for several releases due to the memory mapping, unused system calls, etc. and then are exposed after an update. It's not always correct to assume the last action (the update) caused the problem.

It's all over the apple discussion boards. The graphics update was intended to solve problems that some users of the 8600GT gpu were having with Leopard. It did the trick apparently, but unfortunately created new problems for others who were not affected before. It particularly affected Macbook Pros.

Anyone know what this is...

Fixed video corruption issue with 30″ displays, One of the fixes.

If it's related to the famous green and blue dancing pixels issue thats plagued the web for years.

While a refresh is always nice, Apple did immediately ship 10.5.1 to retail as soon as it was done. 10.5.1 fixed the bugs that were critical enough that they might impact a user before an update could even be done. Time Machine in particular, possibly a workaround for the APE problem, and the LoginKeychain bug that caused your password to be rejected when you started the system. Serious stuff.

Another refresh might be needed so the boot DVD can restore from a Time Capsule?
