Is this theoretically possible due a soft- or firmware update!? I always thought the Pro's and Air's do have special Trackpads for that special gestures?

They do, and 4-finger gestures are only available on the Glass trackpads at the moment. Not on the Air or Pro with multi-touch (non glass) trackpads.

The new update appears to move notebook trackpad preferences into its own preference pane in the control panel, just like on new laptops. However, the update does not bring support the newly introduced 4-finger multi-touch gestures to existing Apple laptops.

Booooooo! What, Apple expects me to buy a new laptop to be able to swipe four fingers at a time? It is really such a big deal to throw use loyal customers a bone?

Fine with me. I think Blu-ray is overrated anyway.

Exactly, it's an overrated and still irrelevant technology for the masses. BR adds little value to movies and videos, unless you have a gigantic screen. And 99% of the customers haven't got the slightest need for storage beyond that which is already offered by DVD-Rs...

Indeed, most markets couldn't care less about BR, and Apple is extremely wise to avoid paying ridiculous licensing fees UNTIL normal DVDs REALLY start disappearing from the mainstream.

Would be great if they finally allowed doing tertiary clicks with the trackpad. I find it slightly annoying that you can't open a link in new tab in browser with a single action on the trackpad.

Since we were talking about multi-touch, apprently other companies are throw us a bone. Namely, firefox.

Changed link.

Note:
(*) Supported MacBooks include: MacBook Pro from this year (either early-2008 model or the new late-2008 ones), MacBook Air (both models from 2008), MacBook from late 2008 (the new aluminum ones)

First, blu-ray is not overated just because you can't see the difference. Second, I would love to back up my 30gb of photos and precious documents on a hard media that I can put somewhere else.

That is a nice gesture from Firefox. :)

I know. I tried the "pre-beta" and it clearly is a pre-beta. But it'll be nice once they get it done. Gestures work nicely, but not perfectly. Not to mention, I really like the unique gestures.

I wanted to share that link to point out that it is a software issue. I wonder if other software creators will incorporate multi-gestures.

I want more snow leopard info.

We'll probably have to wait til MWSF 09.

That's EXACTLY word for word what people were saying about CD-R's and VHS 5 years ago...

by next summer, it is estimated 70-80% of North American homes will have HDTV's. Anyone who has downloaded Blade Runner or 2001 a Space Odyssey in 1080p and watched it on their 23"/30" computer screen or HDTV will tell you how ****** a DVD looks next to it. Better codec, 4x the amount of pixels.

DVD-R's started appearing on computers at the behest of Apple who REALLY pushed pioneer into building a superdrive for them. Apple then sold boxes of 5 DVD-R,s for $25 at a time when a single disc could cost you $30. While the entire industry had been skeptical about the public need for a 4GB optical disk ("it's an irrelevant technology for the masses... 99% of the customers haven't got the slightest need for storage beyond that which is already offered by CD-R...") Apple pushed it to make iDVD and the iApps a Macintosh "killer app" (I remember everyone at school commenting on how amazing it was, a computer could CREATE DVD movies!).

Now the same industry that needed DVD-R's 6 years ago need Blu-Ray support. We need to create our own Blu-Ray movies in an inexpensive manner. We need to store our Prores422 material on optical disks for back up. It,s funny how no one needs a BD-R disks for back up and yet everyone's 500GB internal hard drive is almost full.

The problem here is still Sony's insistence on Apple to include AACS copy protection into it's Mac OS X kernel (which Apple refuses to open, and rightly so).

I still think blu-ray is overrated. I know there are more pixels and it looks better than a DVD. But, it's not life changing or even lifestyle changing—I get the same amount of enjoyment watching blu-ray movies as I do watching DVD movies.

As far as storage goes, I'll stick with what I've got—it's worked for me thus far.

Isn't it supposed to be coming out at MWSF 09?
No, we don't know when. I'm sure what will happen is Steve Jobs will say, "Coming this summer." Then one month after he says that, Apple will announce that Snow Leopard will be delayed 8 months so they can work on the next model of the iPhone.

What a bunch of absolute garbage. It's been proven that after some light hacking of the new trackpad drivers, Early 2008 MacBook Airs and Pros are fully capable of implementing the new trackpad gestures through software.

Thanks for nothing, Apple. Looks like your marketing department wins out over customer satisfaction yet again.

I guess I'll just have to hack the drivers when the update comes out.

That's your personal opinion though. And again, its an opinion a whole lot of VHS users shared when DVD first came out. To me, its a travesty to pay a lot of money for a nice HDTV, then watch movies (which, next to sports, are the material you would MOST want to see in HD) in crap 480p. In my mind, watching DVDs on an HDTV is like buying a top of the line stereo system and only listening to FM radio. Its a flat waste.

That's not to say I won't watch DVDs - I will, mainly when I rent movies. But when I buy movies, its exclusively bluray. I think you will see the uptake of blu-ray increase as the uptake of HDTV in general increases. As for Apple - well, for me personally, blu-ray is not a big deal, because I don't watch movies on my computer. But I do think, in time, Apple will need to add it in, because its going to become a technology that is (a) mainstream and (b) that PCs have and Apple doesn't - and that's not a good position for apple to be in.

Why are the bugs that Apple fixes seem to be the ones that never affect me, yet the ones the one they leave untouched do?
Boy, you have THAT right. The bugs that I run in to are in the interface... The INTERFACE! Those, to me, are an embarrassment. Windows has many shortcomings, but their Explorer is, by and large, consistent in operation.

Yeah I asked if the four finger gestures would be coming to the older new MacBook Pros on Apples discussions site and within an hour the post was deleted due to "inappropriate content".

Sounds like you got a one-finger gesture.

Woops, someone beat me to the obvious. ;)
