I hate that Apple has to release a new OS every single damn year. They *just* get the old one stable and suddenly they push out a newly unstable version. At least for Macs, Apple provides security support for the previous two versions.
Actually, I agree. I miss when macOS was on a 18-30 month cycle.
10.3 Panther: October 2003
10.4 Tiger: April 2005

My guess is still on the day of the rumored apple event for the new MBP and MP, October 29.

I think it will drop earlier for Arcade. I don't think today since they want devs to be able to submit apps using the new SDKs. I don't know if you can do that yet.

Looks like is just a matter of time when we will have to pay a "Subscription" fee to be able to use the operating system.
Music App (former iTunes) almost "useless without Apple Music subscription. TV App and iBooks useless unless you have some money to spend.

In a case like this, I would prefer to remove these apps entirely from OS (and replace by free alternatives), but, unfortunately, this is impossible.
Not sure what you are talking about with the Music app, you can literally disable Apple Music, and just have your purchased and imported music.

Ok, I just want to make a few points...
1: this is not the final build that will be in the Mac App Store.
2: Before installing, the Catalina installer tells you all the software that is not 64 bit, and gives you the option to not install the update.
3: If you are still running Mojave, do not update to this GM/DB11/PB10. Just wait for the public release, or, even better, wait for 10.15.1
4: after installing, if the Music app is gibbing you problems with artwork, try this work around.
Open Music, click Music in the menu bar, go to preferences, then go to Files, then underneath Music Media folder location, click Reset. It will default to a new location, "/Users/______/Music/Music/Media. Then press reset, and it will take a while to move all the files. But this fixed all my issues.
Same with TV app, new location will default to /Users/______/Movies/TV/Media

I just updated my i5 MM (2014),2.8GHz,8GB Ram,256SSD to OS Mohave and will update this MM and my other i5 MM (2018),3.0GHz,8GB Ram,256SSD to OS Catalina a week or so before the next OS update next year.

My other i5 MM(Late 2012),2.5GHz,16GB Ram,500GB HD is still on OS Sierra and I plan to update in the near future to either OS High Sierra or OS Mohave.

I don't undersatnd why they are dropping support for 32bit, so if they dropped it, what do I get as the end user? I am currently using MacOS that supports 32Bit and everything is fine and snappy. If you can support older software, why not? its even more convenient.

Anything that's supported means additional maintenance cost and complexity.

Whether Apple made the right call here is a bit subjective, but there are absolutely benefits to removing old code.

Not for everyone. I have/had 3 - 32 bit apps on my mm18 and the beta installers never told me what they were nor the option to not install.

Yes, many benefits. People are upset as if Apple just dropped the bomb, but they have been informing the world they were planning on doing this for a few years and warned to start to migrate to full 64-bit. Many wait until the last mimute with most things or wait until they have to do something..well now is the time to have to do something if you want to continue upgrading.

The only bummer about this is some app developers either are not updating or making you buy an upgrade. Understandable, but if you bought last year’s product (like Adobe or Roxio), they use it as a way to make you buy the same product again with just a few more triicks but basically the same product.

Time to move on, I am just wondering when 128-bit will come out...

People like this confuse me. There's a platform that offers 34 years of ABI compatibility: Windows. It's a more popular platform and cheaper too. A platform that guarantees you can stay on the same OS version for 10 years while remaining secure and supported.

I don't know why people go out of their way to choose a platform that has removed technical cruft, at the expense of breaking legacy software, for literally it's entire existence. A platform that has major API deprecations and removals yearly. Then go complain about it.
Because when I bought an app, I wasn't expecting it to have a finite lifespan - especially one-off games that tend to be built and support dropped after a few years. Apple has been removing 32bit support for no real reason, other than to force app obsolescence.

How about microsoft deciding to release 3 versions of windows 10 on the same day as apple's catalina gm.

19H1 build 10.0.18362.388

19H2 build 10.0.18363.388

and

20H1 build 10.0.18995

It's bad enough when apple release everything all at once (ios, macos, watchos and tvos all on the same day) - but when microsoft jump on the "let's release everything at once" bandwagon - you end up spending the whole day updating everything. It makes me lament the loss of the time when I only had 1 device and 1 system. Now I have several devices (not all apple) and several systems. So fingers crossed they won't release everything at once.

Thankfully this time apple didn't release everything at once - only the catalina gm.

Then microsoft decided - ah - apple didn't do their everything at once day. So we'll ruin it by releasing 3 different versions of windows on the same day as apple's catalina gm - and you guessed it - ALL AT ONCE! HA! HA!
Uh... they updated 3 different OS branches. Would you be complaining if Apple released security patches for 10.15, 10.14, and 10.13 on the same day?

Interesting. I wonder why they're calling it the GM.
It's really just a candidate. It's common to have several GM seeds, but Apple needs to set some benchmark so that developers can finalize and submit apps, so they start here.

Yeah. But it’s not just 3 versions of macos, it’s ios, watchos, tvos as well. Apple often release those on the same day - and sometimes microsoft updates come on the same day too. You end up spending the whole day updating everything at once.

It would be easier if they didn’t release everything at once.

Apple have quite a random update schedule. But microsoft have patch tuesday. So the least apple could do is avoid patch tuesday. But do they? Nope. Several times in the past apple updates came out on microsoft’s patch tuesday.

Both those ideas are not good due to security bugs.

Because security issues are shared across Apple platforms and across Windows and Mac (e.g. Intel side channel issues, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth bugs), you need to release everything at the same time to minimize the window where a bug is publicly known and exploitable.

Besides, it's more convenient to disrupt all your work one time and reboot everything at the same time, rather than drag it out. See the complaints about Windows' 2 to 3x a month updates. Personally, it would be the best if the entire industry went to Patch Tuesday.

Where did you read "for no reason"? I've not seen that from any credible source. Let's remember Apple is moving toward greater interoperability of apps between MacOS and iOS. It's quite reasonable to think this will demand 64-bit only apps from this standpoint alone. Who knows what other potential reasons may exist?

Hello, already installed GM version of Catalina.

All works fine without one exception.

Apple ID panel in System Preferences is asking me repeatedly for a Apple ID password.

Once I provided Apple ID password and computer password, then after a while it is asking again and again without stop.

Does any one have this issue too? Maybe someone knows how to fix it?
