I would like to see iTunes get back to music only. If you think about it iTunes, which was for music now runs all the iPhone and iPad apps. It's too much clutter. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch need their own separate piece of software.
What do include in this 'music only'? Podcasts? Audiobooks? Music videos? Video Podcasts? Movies and TV shows?
Yes, one could follow the iOS division into:
- Music (including podcasts and audiobooks)
- Videos/Movies/TV shows
- App Store
- iTunes Store
Not sure where music videos and video podcast fit in here (don't have any).
But then 'iTunes Store' on the Mac side is integrated with tabs for Music, Audiobooks, Movies, Podcasts, App Store. But the Mac App Store has its own application.
So assume the synching part of iTunes (essentially what you see in the main window when selecting a device in the source pane) were to be spun off as a separate application, as the movies/video part, as would be the (iOS) App Store, the iTunes Store (which would still purchase movies).
In this scenario, you would buy movies and music in one application and then find them in another. And you would uncheck songs in one application to not have them synced in another app.
I don't see much benefit in this idea (unless you feel that it would be the only solution to keep the performance high in all the parts of iTunes).
I know the reason Apple hasn't done that because iTunes is their link into the world of Windows and they probably don't want to make Windows users download another piece of their software.
That is certainly one reason why things are as they are.
