More armchair lawyering by the replies here. The vocals here seem to be under the impression that the front of the phone or the home screen layout are the patents in question.

Also, anyone who thinks these phones are "competition" for the iPhone must not have actually tried these phones.

Coming from the Arm Chair Technologist. Having owned both the iPhone and an Android I can tell you they are the same damn thing in a different package.

I've seen this post before and I'm calling BS, they are hand picked images. This weekend I will find other designs pre-iPad, and post it as my counter argument.

Actually they did, in 2006.

That's not a tablet, it's a digital picture frame with no touchscreen!

Are you claiming that any product that is square and has a black border, irregardless of what it does, means nobody else can make a product that is square with a black border?

That's what you're saying. That's just dumb.

Apple is saying that TABLET COMPUTERS cannot be designed to look like their own TABLET COMPUTER. This actually holds up in court.

Thats not the point he's making. The point he is making is that the OVERALL DESIGN was in place before the iPad went to market, meaning Samsung could have easily been making the Galaxy Line match its other offerings.

i guess these r desperate measures as samsung phones r taking more and more over in Europe but its apple's own fault for not releasing a new iPhone in over a year ;)

Yep, hit the nail on the head.

a rectangular screen with a black border.....

A RECTANGULAR SCREEN WITH A BLACK BORDER!!!!!!

Absolutely disgusting. It couldn't be more obvious how scared Apple is of competition. As I said, real OEMs like Samsung will be the ones to excel past the market. They hold all the real innovations. It's their parts that make all these devices possible. Apple is not a true OEM. They don't really make anything. Their a packaging company. They put all these amazing innovations in a nice package and market it like they invented (not reinvented) the wheel. The clueless and blind followers buy it right up. The brains and muscle behind all their devices are made by others. The things Apple users salivate and brag about are made by other manufactures. The retina display, the display on the Ipad, the processing power, the flash memory, etc...all made by others, but mostly by the one company a lot of the blind followers love to blindly hate...Samsung. At the same time they actually have the nerve (and ignorance) to say Samsung doesn't innovate. What a complete joke.

Not this trite again. There's plenty of iPad look alikes from before the iPad shipped. That article is a bunch of hogwash and they used ruggedised tablets to prove some pro-Apple stance that has no basis in reality.

Seriously guys, why do you keep repeating this FUD over and over again ? It only hurts your credibility. You're smarter than that nagromme, usually at least.

This kind of hypersensitivity from Apple is putting a mental ban in place to stop me getting an iPhone.

There is no phone out there that looks like iPhone 4... 3Gs - yes, but that is going to get discontinued in like what, 6 weeks? They really should have some confidence in themselves and just laugh at the copycats...

The funny thing is the iPhone actually needs market share, since the bread and butter of it is the app store, music store, etc. In order to get people to buy apps they need the market share.

Apple sticking with AT&T for so long will be looked back on as a tremendous blunder. While Apple was high and mighty and had practically no competition. Android became unleashed with the original Droid and within less than 2 years took the market share away and now it's looking completely unstoppable. The iPhone on VZ was too little, too late and now Apple has to dig into it's last grasp of straws.

The bottom line is their hardware selling philosophy won't allow them to gain market share. One phone and one older phone simply won't do it in a market where choice is king.

This is totally unlike the Mac where market share isn't that critical..

Heh, I remember Baghdad Bob. What shall we call these people? Apple Adam? Cupertino Carl?

I like Cupertino Carl!

The point that has been made multiple times is pointed at Apple as the copy cat. It seems the entire iPad design is similar to Samsungs Digital Picture frame (or it can be presented that way in court.) Software wise, Apple can keep buying IP all they want, all it is proving is that "We Patented it!" line was rubbish.

I had no idea that Androids notification pre-dated Palm and Cydia. My apologies if that's true...Thanks for calling me Baghdad Bob though.

Sheesh android fans ;)

The Galaxy Ace (mentioned earlier) I'd say shares a close resemblance with the iPhone 4.

Hello I need a phone today and I'd like to buy an iPhone please.

Sorry, due to demand they are all gone and we can't guarantee you one for at least a week.

Oh, well in that case I'll have a Galaxy S one from Samsung instead.

Sorry Apple have said no, you can't have one of those. So go away and come back in a week and we may be able to sell you an iPhone if you are lucky.

:D

1. Apple's lawyers have nothing else to do, and they came up with this. /facepalm

2. I don't understand why Apple is looking like it cares about Europe? It doesn't care:
- we have higher prices than US and UK (don't give me the no VAT displayed in US);
- only a few countries have real apple stores, the rest just apple resellers that don't have any good HW configurations available, only for preorder (I checked the whole Amsterdam for an ultimate MacBook Air or a top MacbookPro 15", and there are at least 4 resellers), or resellers that have higher prices than the whole Europe (like in Romania).
- In the whole Europe there's no stocks deposit. All the products are coming from Asia. There's one deposit in Ireland for Mac Pros. So, if you want to order something, it takes about two weeks to get it.

But Apple loves us... and wants to protect us from fakes like Samsung's... Yeah right.

3. What's next? Apple builds the iBrick. Samsung builds the Samsung Brick S. Apple sues Samsung because it built a brick similar to its own.

On a serious note, Apple's new notification system is just like Android... I don't understand how come some patents are okay to use, others are not... It's BS. Just open up the patent market already!

Maybe it's just like the notification system that Apple used in MacOS 9.

Not net that one angain.

So, again, the "before" tabs are rugadized for industrial and military use. They are not consumer devices.

In the "after" row number 1 and 4 are turned by 90°. They are so seldomly used in Portrait mode that the phototshopper could not even find an appropiate picture.

And number 2 is only 7 inch and officialy a phone and not a tablet (To be used with a headset).

Another example of Photoshopping.

Hyundai and Samsung

Honestly, I think Apple should take some of those billions in cash, and fake an entire design, get Samsung to agree to manufacture it, etc. and put a fatal flaw in the design. Then when Samsung magically comes up with their product, pull it, claim it was a bad idea and then Samsung is left with 1 million widgets that do nothing. THEN sue the crap out of them for copying a deisgn that was obviously flawed claiming they simply copy everything from Apple, flaws and all.. buahahahahaahahaha

One is a computer, the other is a Digital Picture frame.

One design feature of the iPad is the minimalistic design. No keyboard, while all laptops have a keyboard, no handle to hold it, nothing. That is for a device that needs to allow the user to enter text, and that needs to allow the user to carry the device around, hold it while using it and so on. On the other hand, a Digital Picture frame is designed to just sit there on your mantle piece and display pictures of the grandchildren. So there are two completely different devices.

Now if Samsung claims that they lose sales of picture frames because people are confused and buy an iPad when they really wanted a picture frame, I think they are welcome to sue Apple about that.
