The Samsung Q1 shipped in 2006 :

440x330_5.jpg

Oh look, a full touch screen device with a bezel. ;)

hey look, Samsung has giant home button before the iPad! :)

.

Not like this is a new practice either...

Does anyone remember when Jobs launched the Mac Air with distorted photos showing it to be waaay thinner than in reality? Cant find the pictures atm, but i know they are out there somewhere. Anyone who can dig them up?

edit: Found it....

1996526883.jpg

(The one below is "real" thickness, based on width/thickness dimensions of the device)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; de-de) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

this is getting redic, the nexus and s 2 look NOTHING like the iPhone. they might as well just ban every smartphone on the market.

also ehy doesnt samsung fire back? they could make em look so ba in the press but i guess apple is doing it just fine on its own lol. i want an iPad but im tempted to by a samsung just out of principel

likewise, except that i dont want an ipad. not going beyond computers afaik apple goes... which in practice means ill use the ones i get for free (the mac air i'd probably consider paying for myself though if i had to, its a nice little gadget).

That's not a tablet, it's a digital picture frame with no touchscreen!

Are you claiming that any product that is square and has a black border, irregardless of what it does, means nobody else can make a product that is square with a black border?

That's what you're saying. That's just dumb.

Apple is saying that TABLET COMPUTERS cannot be designed to look like their own TABLET COMPUTER. This actually holds up in court.

They all look like plain picture frames anyway.

It is expected that these devices are also covered by one or more of the patent rights invoked..........

So Apple lawyers can't even be bothered to be specific with the details to the court!
Oh dear Apple, how you are falling, you better pray that this plans out cause if it doesn't, well, everyone knows Samsung, everyone knows Apple, Apple being reported on as falsifying evidence in international front page news, goodbye sales Apple. Goodbye stock price and company value....

I am not going to say weather this story is fact or not, BUT if it is then I am frankly disgusted with Steve Jobs and Apple and the courts for allowing it. And I would sincerely hope Apple get whats coming, case thrown out, the brands reputation damaged and a massive fine given to them plus I would expect Apple to pay large damages to Samsung.

What makes this a worrying story is that somehow, I just wouldn't put it past Apple to stoop to this level of stupidity and arrogance.

Oh look, iOS5's split keyboard quite a few years before Apple "innovated" it ;)

+1

If it were the other way i.e, if Apple had come up with split keyboard first and Samsung had introduced it in Android tablets, Apple would've sued them. I think Apple should stop suing every goddamn company.

Also I don't like the people who take Apple's marketing so seriously. I find it funny to see people calling iPad 'magical' and such. If Apple introduces something (which is already there), its re-inventing and if someone else uses the same thing its copying...

Yeah but they didnt patent it? lol

Apple is Just covering it's ass, they have learnt from their mistake, with Microsoft stealing their GUI. And they dont want to fall into that again.

Not to mention Android Phones are only what they are today because of the iPhone.
http://gizmodo.com/334909/google-android-prototype-in-the-wild <--what android was suppose to be

1) WIMP and the desktop metaphor are not Apple inventions.
2) Android is still that. Android is a software platform, not hardware design.

p.s.

2003 called, it wants its ipad design back.

And as easterners are seen as thieves, how bout this nifty little gadget:

Didnt MSFT publically announce the split keyboard before Apple did? Just for the record here?

Ok, Apple defenders. What's the excuse now? They made a mistake second time? This is a clear manipulation of evidence. If the judge doesn't throw this lawsuit out of the courtroom, he/she is a compete turd. How many times is Apple going to get away with this?

Samsung’s copying of Apple is blatant and repeated, and Apple can hardly choose to ignore it. The designs of Samsung’s products are NOT obvious, NOT the only designs they could have used, and would NOT have existed without Apple to copy. A few other tablet makers have managed to make things that don’t imitate the iPad so closely. (Granted, they’re the minority—most have followed Apple just as Google the smartphone makers have. That’s the safe money! But it IS possible to do something new and different.)

You could certainly say Samsung COULD have come up with all these designs by sheer luck. Obviously, though, they did not. Just look at tablets pre-iPad and post-iPad. There was a lot more variety before the iPad was there to mimic! And I can think of plenty of new directions to go in, too.

Who knows what’s a bluff, a negotiating tactic, a warning shot to other copycats, or a real threat. In the end, let’s hope the result of all this is REAL innovation—or at least interesting new designs—from Samsung (and others). Better for consumers and maybe even for Samsung!

And yes, I hope the case is decided on REAL evidence and not on Photoshop. Someone has been stupid with the images for sure. But that’s details, and the bigger picture is that no sane person can think Samsung hasn’t been copying Apple. Does Apple have a legal recourse? I don’t blame them for seeking one.

Look up. Those are only 2 of +10 slates i dug up the other night. Generic F------ Design. Capisce? Heck, its used for anything from picture frames to tv:s. Thats how generic it is. Geez...

Didnt MSFT publically announce the split keyboard before Apple did? Just for the record here?

Yes, they had it years before... and patents on various types including ones that adjust the spacing of virtual keys to the spacing between your fingers..

I've seen this post before and I'm calling BS, they are hand picked images. This weekend I will find other designs pre-iPad, and post it as my counter argument.

Actually they did, in 2006.

I did this for you the other day. Ill dig up the links, hang on a sec (or 1000).

Edit:

Here they are...

(I specifically looked for pads from 2005 and earlier* (some of them, like the vista electrovaya and one of the PBJ slates are probably post-2005 though)).

* this is when Apple patented the wheel, err... registered the generic design.

Presenting the JooJoo:

Presenting, the one and only, Bill Gates (No, im not a MSFT-fanboy):

Personally though, i like to give credit Weiser (even if he, too, stood on the shoulder of giants):

Nice reading: http://www.media.mit.edu/resenv/classes/MAS961/readings/weiser_reprint.pdf

P.S.

To cut the crap postings showing ruggedized Win Tables:

I present to you, Electrovaya:

200391433844_sc1000.jpg

Yes, that is XP.

Electrovaya%20Scribbler%20SC4000.jpg

Vista.

As for release dates, its quite tricky. The first device is possibly the SC 1240.

http://www.shopping.com/Electrovaya...B-HARD-DRIVE-BLACK-ELECTROVAYA-Item/info?sb=1

CNET has a review posted 2003 for said device:

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/electrovaya-scribbler-tablet-pc/1707-3121_7-30577411.html

Now, i want a f'in cracker. And samsung should give me one of them fancy pads. Prior art, predating community design - check.

Ill post some more pictures, for future reference:

Tatung TTAB-A12D (2005)

(Not only did they steal Apples patented homescreen square, they also stole the color white - and obviously used the time machine without Apples written consent)

Apparantly, Electrovaya also made that very same device (?!)

iPad 2004? Nah...
is she using her finger? Looks like it...

(Device is a PBJ Slate, see following pictures. Years vary... Some page named "Ployer.com" wrote a story on PBJ Touch slate in 2004. Page is broken though)

ROUNDED CORNERS! CALL THE LAWYERS!!!!

Addendum: Sahara i213 was apparently launched in 2004.

Sahara1.jpg

According to news about it, it had finger touch (and stylus, of course).

From leading health care suppliers to major hospitals the Sahara iTablet PC has been well received by the medical community. The Sahara Touch-iT iTablet, utilizing a finger touch-screen and supporting XP Home or XP Professional, gives medical professionals the flexibility of having a fully featured PC available within a minimal footprint. Also since the Sahara iTablet line of products includes both Touch-screen and active Digitizer systems a medical practice is able to standardize on a single hardware supplier for their Tablet needs.

Fujitsu, 2004:

Not sure if i would call it "stylistic", then again i never liked Fujitsu design.

(heck, put it side by side with their new WP7 device and its like.. the same)

Thats enough for now.

oh samsung - you should listen to aapl mgt. when they say -

" competition is good - but people should invent thier own stuff..."

" change it..." - Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1995

Didnt MSFT publically announce the split keyboard before Apple did? Just for the record here?

They showed the thumbs layout was shown in a Windows 8 video before Apple showed it in iOS 5, but as iOS 5 will launch before Windows 8 people will most likely say Microsoft copied them.

Id like the EU to stop wasting their money on the pointless court cases when their are countries going bankrupt. Stupid Apple wasting everyones time trying to stop Android. Its too late to stop Android.

Just took that Samsung tablet for example.

Scroll up, I posted a screenshot of it on a Samsung Q1 running under Windows XP tablet edition.

And Android beat both. ;)

this one is so lovely that i have to post it. no idea what device it is. anyone recognize it?

I don't make any comments on this until I'm sure I've heard all the true facts here. Just hope that this is resolved in which proper patents are protected, and bogus claims are thrown out. Especially with so many arguments based on speculation about things which I'm not sure are even really talked about, in the case, anymore.

Their Design registration says absolutely nothing about being for a tablet computer. In fact, it has no description at all. Just the picture below and another one showing an edge view.

Apple´s Community Design certificate does say it is for "Handheld computers".
Every application for a Community Design certificate must specify a category according to the Locarno classification.
