Apple Seeking to Build New Retail Store in Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal

Actually I'd rather they stay out of Brooklyn and remain in the mall that is Manhattan.
Sometimes I feel like this, but then some days I don't. It would be cool just to have a closer location for us.

Where in Brooklyn can they put it?
Right on Joralemon Street. It's foot traffic during the day is about (or more than) the amount as the one on west 14th street.

It would be in the Brooklyn Municipal Building - which would be epic & the borough president, Marty!, is making room (just in case Apple wants it, he said this last week during The State of The Borough Address) but not exclusively just for them. . .

(It'll look like this on Joralemon Street - Iconic!)

The 5th ave store is really for tourists visiting all the attractions in that area such as Central Park, The Plaza, F A O Swartz, Madison Ave shopping, etc..
EXACTLY! Which I really don't like. I feel like the Brooklyn store would be more of a native store. We would have crowds as well, but at least it'll be a crowd of NYer's.

Yea I think Brooklyn is the most inconvieniant borough in NYC. I don't think many people outside of Brooklyn would go to a Brooklyn Apple store rather than one in Manhattan or even Long Island. Then again I dont think many people outside of Brooklyn go there for anything. Besides, 2.5 million people in Brooklyn will still buy Apple products with or without a Brooklyn store. Apple knows this.

I'm confused. Last year, in 2010, 15 Million tourist came to Brooklyn alone. Brooklyn has the 3rd and ONLY other largest Business District, in NYC, after Lower & Midtown Manhattan. It's not the point of "2.5 Million will buy without an apple store" It's more like "We're using your products, so could you make it a little more convenient for us BK residents?"

I would also disagree that Brooklyn is the most inconvenient borough. I guess you've never heard of Staten Island

Can we get a store in Brooklyn please? Manhattan is so lame.
Lol I love Manhattan I do - but Brooklyn is underrated. Not everyone (especially natives) likes to calmly stroll to the outer borough, Manhattan. Brooklyn is my home and it'd like it if they'd start building here! (Even though it's still the same city Lol)

What neighborhood would Apple build it in? Most people who live in Brooklyn *work* in Manhattan. Just because Brooklyn is a great place to have a tasty beer and meal at night doesn't mean its a prime retail location during the day.

I bet a lot of Brooklynites visit Manhattan Apple stores on their lunch hour.
Yeah that's because we don't have a choice. Lol
If there were an Apple store IN Brooklyn do you think we'd travel to Manhattan for the same purpose? Absolutely, NOT.

And Brooklyn has the 3rd CBD in NYC. Another fact people seem to cover. Lol

I think Atlantic Ave would be a good spot. Aren't they looking to build an arena, housing, etc right there too? TONS of lines hit that spot too.

I love me some Apple, but after the Upper West Side store opened, I don't think Manhattan needs any more Apple stores.

I agree with this as well. Once the arena comes next year - Atlantic avenue will be revitalized (not that it's dead now! Rush hour on Atlantic Ave is just horrid.)

Atlantic Yards is a huge development so an Apple store in that area or DownTown Brooklyn will be ideal. Brooklyn isn't slowing down either, so eventually I'm SURE Apple will be here, soon! :)

How might an Apple Store fit into GCT's decor? I'm guessing that the inside would be all Apple, while the exteriors would be the unchanged, like for this London Apple Store: Regent Street: “Highest Traffic” Apple Store In The World

Also, by 2016 or 2017, Grand Central Terminal may get even busier, because MTA Capital Construction - East Side Access should be done about then. It is a connection between the Long Island Rail Road and GCT. The LIRR trains will go into a station below the existing station.

But by then, some Metro-North trains might get rerouted to Penn Station, evening the score.

Grand Central Station would be a prime location for any premium retailer.

I'd be more interested if they opened one closer to my house (closest one is 17 miles away through much traffic / 34 miles round trip). I tend to order from Apple's online store because the price of gas is more than the shipping cost on most Apple accessories, and shipping is free on Apple's bigger ticket items.

Wow, really? You have to drive 32 miles round trip to an Apple store and you think that's bad? Where I live there isn't an Apple store in the entire STATE. We drive 40 miles round trip for groceries. Nearest Apple store is 2.5 hours and two toll booths ONE WAY.

Stop your whining.

Downtown Brooklyn near one of the bridges would be a good location.

Bingo. If you look at the various factors that go into picking a location (demographics, transportation, foot traffic, space overhead, etc. etc.), Apple would be crazy to stick a store in Red Hook or 4th Avenue. Crazy. But Borough Hall -- now THAT wouldn't be crazy at all. There's high-end space available right now on Montague, and an Apple Store would be a serious draw. Parking doesn't matter, any more than it does at the 5th Ave. store (which isn't just for tourists, guys -- it serves the entire East Side). When more than 1/2 of New Yorkers don't drive, only the big-item stores (Ikea, Home Depot, Lowes) need to worry about parking. Not Apple.

And there really should be a store in Brooklyn. It's not an "either/or" situation -- let Manhattan get more stores (like Grand Central, which is actually a very smart idea), but for god's sake put one across the bridge. It'll be full on day one.

I would not mind if the trip was on open road, but in stop-and-go traffic with more stop than go, it's definitely not a fun ride. Your 40 mile grocery trip is probably on a nice open road, not through congested freeways and interchanges. Distance is not bad -- it's time in the car sharing the road with folks consumed with road rage.

BTW: there was no "whining" in my original post. Just stated that it costs less to have it shipped than it does to pay for the gas for the 34-mile round trip. But if you don't like your 40-mile roundtrip for groceries I suggest you move closer to the grocery store -- either that or stop taking offense at others wanting to save gas and time. It's not my fault you live so far out in the boondocks.

Apple Store NY Locations

It seems to me that the locations in the city so far have been pretty landmarkish, and noticeable, specially Fifth Ave. Having a indoors mall-like location located inside Grand Central would just ruin it, and I doubt they would get much traffic. I think a better location would be Rockefeller Center area, if they're trying to detour traffic from Fifth Ave to another store.

The could also look on the Upper East Side =P Not sure how much traffic they would go though, besides from me. HA

so you're another poor soul that lives in bay ridge. that was a hellish commute for me for a year back in 2000-2001. 90 minutes each way on the R train

I lived in Bay Ridge till last fall. Nice enough area, but ITA about the R train commute. Of course that commute was the main reason I could afford a one bedroom on my own...

I'd like an Apple Store in Brookyn out of principle, but agree it pretty much would have to be around Atlantic Avenue to get the max amount of customers.
