Pairing more then one set of headphones would be super handy for long flights with my wife. Sharing a pair is always super difficult when trying to actually hear what your watching since planes are so loud.

You upgraded the iPhone 6S 3 weeks before Apple announces new one?

Also, headphone jack is done. Get a proper wireless headphones and move on OR get a dongle. Apple is done with 3.5 and so should you. Simple as that
Yeah, obviously I'm not too concerned with the latest and greatest. I know I could have gotten it a little cheaper if I waited, but my phone was extremely tired. It wanted to die.

It's definitely not gone. Apple highlighted the high quality hp-j in Mac Studio. But I guess that they separate consumers and creators or something? And at least they backed with the ports on the Macbooks, which is nice. So there might be hope for an analogue soul as myself, but I'm not holding my breath.

And BT headphones are nice but I like to have options. And it don't feel great to buy tech with batteries all the time. A good set of headphones can last forever almost. With batteries that's not possible.

Yeah. Everybody’s concerned about camera quality, no one is concerned with audio quality. It’s so weird that it’s a niche thing to care about. Everyone is good with good enough.

What’s wrong with wireless audio?

Sounds good to my ears.

Yes, it's nice. And the experience of wireless is very nice. You can put your phone anywhere and roam free. It's easy to connect to Apple tv and things like that. But the option of lossless is not there, and because Apple is stubbornly proprietary connectivity is sometimes very hard, and require you to buy overpriced cables to do simple things.

well rumours point to new AirPods having lossless audio so you’ll get your wish.

Yeah, and I guess as battery life gets better it'll have a longer lifespan, but it's a lot of money for something that will last maybe 3 years. The Max will of course last longer and would be a better purchase in that aspect - if they get an upgrade.

Lossless is not there because BT does not have enough bandwidth for it, even with 5.2. You need Wifi for true lossless audio, and you cannot put that into something that small or it would have terrible battery life.

Just do yourself a favor. Apple has a Blind Test app which lets you test 256kbit AAC vs Lossless. I never did more than 50% on that test, so I cannot differentiate between those two codecs. In that case, I don't care if I have lossless or not.

And I own a pair of speakers that cost 22000$. Invest in speakers and amp, not the source. 256Kbit AAC is enough.

#BringBackTheiPod then
I would love to see Apple jump back into this space. If anything, it would be something "new". I'm getting tired of the refresh treadmill that Apple has settled into.

The Digital Audio Player space -- while still small -- is growing as more people demand premium audio. Companies like Fiio, Astell & Kern, Shanling, and iBasso have jumped into the gap left behind by the abandonment of the iPod, and their devices are nothing short of amazing. We have learned to live with crappy resolution music -- mostly the fault of the introduction of CDs and Apple's original iPod device -- but we shouldn't have to.

Apple can't just cram audio functionality into their iPhones, though. True hi-rez DAPs have audio chipsets that in their current form would be difficult to add to the small form-factor iPhone. DAPs tend to be chunky and do put off a good amount of heat. Lastly, with the current Bluetooth Codecs, only LDAP gets close to hi-rez, and that's even not quite there. Without a headphone jack, it would be difficult to provide the audio stream that true audiophiles seek out.

I don't mind carrying a separate device, though I do get strange looks on a plane. "Is that your phone? It's kind of big! It looks cool, though!"

Apple should take hold of this space once again, but this time, do it right. They were partially responsible for destroying high-end audio. They could be responsible for bringing it back.

Yeah, true - The battery is the only downside in the headphones but if you choose a model that has a user replaceable one then it will last you a long time.
And yes, the port is alive in computer because for certain specific things its still useful but in terms of tech in everyday products its basically done.

On the iphone front, you probably still have 2 weeks return window so maybe consider returning it and getting the latest one OR wait for the price drop (unless you got amazing deal of course).
I can't imagine anything worse then sitting through the keynotes and realising that I paid so much money for something that got replaced something so much better (it may not be the case but its worth considering).

Good luck with your decision :)

Its time to move on.

Move on to inferior sound and mic quality? I did use AirPods, but they just caused me nothing but problems in pairing, battery life, sound, and mic quality. Wireless mics are absolutely crap compared to wired since they don't have a solid connection. Just do a mic test between AirPods and even wired dirtybuds and the sound quality is night and day.

Where does one even start? Why not wireless headphones? You can't get progress and still keep the old tech. Its just impossible. If we didn't get rid off stuff then we would still be having laptops with floppy, cd drives etc.
And if you don't want to get with the trend then why are you not on 6S? There will always be trade offs but there will always be solutions. In your case you are stuck in between so thats why you are complaining. Either solve the issue with today's tech or just don't get the tech that doesn't support your "old-ish" lifestyle.
You can't have both. So pick a side

Fun fact: Headphones from 50 years ago are still usable today and still produce amazing sound. And they don't have finite batteries in them. When your AirPods batteries die, guess where they go: Straight into the landfill.

I get that but a CD from 30 years ago still works too. Not the same example but I'm sure you get the point.

Wired solution will disappear and we will move to wireless for pretty much everything eventually.

Lol but where?

Many MANY android phones have lost their 3.5mm headphone Jack including gaming phones too!

You mean the overpriced flagships? Because the majority of Android phones still have the headphone jack. If you want a flagship phone, just buy an iPhone.

You're comparing a storage media format to audio. Of course CDs disappeared because it got replaced with a media format that stored so much more: DVD. And DVD is pretty much replaced with Bluray.

Wired will never disappear because...you know...physics. Wired is always superior to wireless because it has a solid connection and does more than wireless can. It's why wifi hasn't replaced ethernet and never will completely.

In theory you are correct but look it - majority of households are on wifi and don't use ethernet. That is perfect example why 3.5mm jack is out on consumer products.

The future is wireless.

I don't understand the need for lossless audio in a listening device meant to be used everywhere EXCEPT a confined, completely quiet location where one can appreciate the nuances of lossless music. Forget the fact that Airpods could never accurately recreate the sound like an expensive home audio setup. It seems like a fake goal that has no real purpose other than marketing.

If that were true the desktop Macs wouldn't still have ethernet ports on them. Plus it's gotten to the point video game publishers are now recommending players use ethernet over wifi for better quality.

Or you know, Apple cut it so they could make more money on the iPhone since they wouldn't have to pay for jacks and also to incentivize AirPods sales, despite the fact there's still plenty of space in the iPhone for a jack and there was no reason for the jack to get cut from the iPad.

The future is wireless.

Suuuuuuuuuure it is.

I think we've reached the end of productive discussion so I'll just leave it as is. You think it would be better to have headphone jack and I think we are heading wireless. We've said was we think and now its not productive anymore so lets agree to disagree and move on

Right, I think my problem is that I’d like them sooner rather than later, and there has been basically no reliable indicators that there are new ones coming anytime soon.
Most we’ve gotten is Gurman saying there might be new color options, but… that’s it.
And Apple goes years without updating their headphones sometimes, and the Max is still not that old
i mean if you can find them discounted for a bit then why not. but i think they’d be updated by the end of the year. if airpods pro get updated soon with higher quality audio the max almost certainly will

Give me a list of 10 released in 2022.
Flagship: Sony Xperia 1 IV (like all the previous mark models have had them). Samsung dropped all 3.5m on all their flagships, Xaomi did on most of theirs as well.

Again list me 10 released in 2022 flagship or budget that is available in N.America or globally if you'd like.

The worst is wireless headset reviews.

Quality is: bad/good/great

yet hardly ANY of these youtubers or even web article writers talk about:
Music Playback quality,
vs,
Call Quality for the end user,
vs,
call quality for the other party hearing your voice during calls.

Big differences in each.
