when i look at my orders in my AT&T account my iphone order says "in progress"... what does everyone else's say?

I got my order in about 3 hours ago and it was still June 24!!! But no email yet, so hopefully that doesn't change. How long did it take you all to get your email to confirm it?

I ordered them this morning around 3am, got confirmations on each of them in roughly 10min each.

I can understand this caused a lot of frustration for people today. I preordered two iPhones. I reserved a white iPhone 16 GB at my local Best Buy without much hassle, and I was happy to find a place to take the order. The Apple retail store said I could wait in line on launch day for the white one, but that didn't sound appealing. After trying all day I managed to finally complete my online order for the black 16 GB at 10:18 PM eastern, shortly before the stock ran out.
I'll be happy to upgrade from my iPhone that I bought in 2007. It has broken WiFi and I'm so tired of EDGE (and I use it a lot).

The requests to reserve require little computational power, they've got other peak times to handle, and provisioning extra servers for this in a colo is done frequently and cheaply. I work on massively parallel systems, so I have a *faint* idea what I'm talking about. $10 says they hit a race condition, forgot to lock a table or variable, and the system came grinding to a halt.

Stop apologizing for shoddy engineering.

Can we put this beast to rest for everyone?

Akamai manages Apple's distributed network of systems mirroring their main infrastructure.

Apple invested $150 million about 8 years ago into Akamai.

When the Server investment is North Carolina is ready, Apple isn't going to stop at that to help distribute the load around the globe.

Back in 2008 Apple added Limelight to Akamai:

delivery date is kind of a problem

When I taped the "confirm" order button or whatever, it said "delivers by June 24th" but the page that loaded afterwards said "Ships by July 2, delivers July 6-8" The problem is I'm moving on July 2 to about 700 miles away.

Oh, and to make things worse, I'm a developer with an awesome app that I can't test until that gyroscope arrives.

White In Apple Stores At Launch?

The Apple retail store said I could wait in line on launch day for the white one, but that didn't sound appealing...
That sounds great to me. What store told you there would be some white ones on launch day? All the Apple Stores I called said they had no clue if there would be any. I'm willing to camp out for 2 days to get a white one next Thursday. Please let us know what store told you that.

So, I originally signed up with AT&T in November 2009 and got the 3GS. Somehow, inexplicably, when I went to check on my upgrade status after WWDC it showed that I was eligible for an upgrade ALREADY! Sure enough, it worked and I ordered the iPhone 4 just in time to get it June 24. Did anyone else have this similar stroke of luck? I seem to be the only one of anybody I know who got so lucky (or so I think)...

I bought my 3GS on opening day last year, and got the full discount on my iP4 (only halfway into a 2-year contract). I have the cheapest 450 minute plan, but I've been an ATT customer for like 6 years FWIW.

I also had a helluva time with the website today - I had to use Apple 'cuz I had a $130 gift card. I tried sporadically since 6am PDT. I finally got through at around 4:15 pm and got a 32GB, and got an email a couple hours later confirming the 24 June delivery date.

I'm a bit tweaked that they will only ship to my ATT billing address tho' - In other words, home. I got my 3GS delivered to my office so I could sign for it, but they wouldn't let me this time. Luckily there are Mac nuts where I work so I can work from home that day :)

well, think carefully... server down, sold out pre-order....

any of that does any damage to Apple?

Now, think more carefully...

any of that .. does it create more sensation, media coverage????

Think more....
at whose expense, does Apple do that?

Just ordered online my iPhone 4 (black, 16GB) on Apple Store for ship by July 2 and delivered by July 6-8. No upgrade charges, just $199 + $29 bumper (black). (Estimated) Sales tax was $55. In total $283.....not bad!! :D

Like many others, I was inclined to HAVE my iPhone 4 on day 1 of release, June 24. But after all the pre-order chaos, I thought to myself, do I really need it on day 1? I've already experienced the very early waits in line (4am) for my iPhone 3G back in July 11, 2008. Since then, I have enjoyed every second of being a proud owner of the 3G....so what's a few days more wait for the iPhone 4. It just means I can hang a little longer to my ever reliable 3G!! ;)

ahhh crap! it's annoying how popular this phone is. i'm so overdue for an update so pushing the 24th to july 2nd is really depressing.

i may just switch to verizon and get an android phone just to get my fix of getting a new device without fighting off crowds of people so i can spend $300+.

in-store pickup here...was the only way to complete a transaction considering att's awful servers. guess i'll get to the ala moana store at 3-ish. was first in chandler last june for the 3gs and i think i got there around 5. i imagine there will be overnighters at the ala moana store, though...

Same here, gotta go Ala Moana, probably because they know they can't make the June 24 delivery date to Hawaii.

I guess I'm lucky. Pre-ordered on apple.com around 5 PM Pacific time and received a confirmation email at 5:34 PM claiming that they'd keep an iPhone waiting for me at the store on June 24th.

Im among the lucky ones as well. Pre-ordered 2 of, shortly after the store was updated. Got the confirmation approx 18 hours after. Delivers on 24th it states:D Just need to fly over to London to pick it up, but I defo gonna be 1st in Poland as Im heading back on 25th, early morning. Cannot waith to get me greed hands on these bad boys.

Spent ALL day trying to order?

Seriously, some of you spent all day trying to order a phone?? Really? Wow.

Some of y'all really should think about your priorities. It's a phone...not much different to the one you already have.

The ones getting upset, I'd like to thank you. You've had me smiling all day as I've read about your anguish.

I was up at 4:30 this morning and have tried to order probably a hundred different times today, all unsuccessful.

This has me very disappointed in both Apple and ATT. I don't care what sort of sympathy other users are able to generate for these companies. Their inability to perform has shaken my loyalty to both ATT and Apple. A phrase I used just tonight at dinner (on a completely different subject regarding work) is "always under-promise and over-deliver"–something both companies have failed to fulfill in my opinion.

As a consumer, I feel as though we need to be compensated or at least acknowledged if Apple is going to continue to pull money out of our pockets. I don't believe it is right that someone like me has to wait for the new iphone when another "lucky" one could have waken up at 2 in the afternoon and been more successful at securing a launch day shipment to their home. This infuriates me and will undoubtedly change my future purchasing decisions when it comes to Apple/ATT.

I was dead set on pre-ordering an iphone4 to have shipped to my house on launch to hold me over until they updated the iMac line, at which point I was also going to buy a new iMac and Time Capsule.

Now I think it is time to explore other options. Although my individual decisions won't make much of a difference in Apple's annual revenue figures, collectively, Apple's unhappy customers will eventually disrupt Apple's forward momentum and progress if they do not adequately rectify disasters such as today.

The iPhone4 Pre-Order launch was ultimately a failure.

Maybe its time to switch over to Linux ehh?
I think the fact that you couldn't get your order in is pretty solid proof that the pre-order launch was a wild success. But, sure, "switch over to Linux". That's a great way to see first-hand why there is so much demand for Apple products and, next time, you won't mind having to wait a few days to get one.

Seriously, you're going to sign up for a two-year contract and buy something you don't really want because you can't bear to wait 7 days for an iPhone? My head hurts.

So.. it's ATT's fault that APPLE'S webserver crashed and burned It's the responsibility of ATT to make sure that Apple keeps their sits up and running. As a 15 year Unix Sysadmin who deals with servers like these on a daily basis, I don't know whether to laugh at how asinine your post is, how asinine your logic in it is, treat your post (and subsequently, you) as a fanboy who believes Apple could do no wrong, or just shake my head, facepalm, and move along.

All of the above sounds better, but I digress. I'd love to see how you'd handle this situation, outside of the fact that for a period of 2 hours this morning, these servers were working fine (I was awake and on them as the orders began; I can easily tell by your posts, that you weren't).

BL.
"Unix Sysadmin", isn't that like a janitor for computers?
