I tried all ****ing morning to preorder, but could not. Finally around 5PM today I put in an in store pickup request. I got the confirmation page, but i never got a confirmation email. I decided to try and preorder one about an hour ago and the preorder page said 6/24 ship date.

I got into checkout and it still said 6/24.

After i submitted the order the page then stated 7/2.

At no point during the order process was 7/2 mentioned. its only after i hit submit order, that i saw it. I cant even call apple support.

The order status page on apple.com won't load so i have no idea whats up with my delivery preorder or my in store pickup.

WTF?

I had the SAME problem.

Recent independent surveys on AT&T's quality:

Gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/5428343/our-2009-12+city-3g-data-mega-test-att-won
PC World: http://www.pcworld.com/article/1895...rlds_second_3g_wireless_performance_test.html
PC Magazine: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2364263,00.asp

From a Slashdot summary:

"The most recent test (PC Magazine) shows AT&T nearly 80% faster than the other 3G networks (June 2010). PC World's tests show AT&T to be 67% faster than the competition (Feb 2010). Gizmodo's tests show AT&T on top, but by a smaller margin (Dec 2009). PC World's tests do show that AT&T has improved markedly since their Feb 2009 tests (improving speeds by over 200% in some places). By the end of 2009, AT&T's network was the fastest and it's kept improving to widen the gap. Even in so-called trouble markets like New York and San Francisco AT&T is doing well. In San Francisco, their speeds are double the competition's average and over 75% faster than the second fastest. In New York, T-Mobile's HSPA+ network (recently rolled out) is 10% faster, but AT&T is still 94% faster than Verizon and 130% faster than Sprint."

I think I JUST snuck in under the deadline. My two phones were purchased at 3:30PM and 4:10PM PST. Both confirmation emails showing June 24th as the day I get the phone.

I believe the acknowledgment email is just to tell you your order is being processed. The Confirmation email probably comes when they charge your card and ship the iPhone next Wed. Just a guess.

I have only received the acknowledgement email and my card has in fact been charged $215.72 and two $1.00 charges from Apple.

I somehow ended up getting through and was able to get one to shipped to me on the 24th after hours of frustration, but to ask the same question as another user prior to me that never got an answer.

Although I did manage to pre-order a phone, I also reserved one as a fail safe. Do you think I will still be able to pick one up at the upgrade price? Just a thought.

incomplete order

after trying to complete my order with several failures on apples site, i just received 3 emails confirming 3 different orders. Time to call tomorrow and cancel,

Following in AT&T's footsteps, Apple has sold out of the initial allotment of iPhone 4s for launch day. The Apple online store now lists July 2nd as the earliest ship date that you can receive an iPhone 4.

Stores may still have stock on launch day for walk-in traffic, but it seems the allotment for pre-orders has been filled. The iPhone 4 will launch on June 24th, 2010.

Article Link: Apple Sells Out of Initial iPhone 4 Shipment

The article misstates what the shipping info means. The July 2 ship by date is not the earliest you can receive an iPhone 4 it's the latest date Apple will ship the product (if nothing goes wrong).
It could still ship June 24-July 1 and very well might; Apple could just be managing expectations. If the phone leaves on July 2 with free shipping that means receipt by July 6-8.
Apple wants to push customers into stores where the likelihood of tandem purchases is much higher.

I ordered mine nearly 4 hours later than you and still got my confirmation for the 24th:D

Got me, I ordered mine at 7a and have only had an acknowledgement email. No charges or pending charges from Apple. Each bank is different and charges show up at different times is about the only thing that I could think of. I deal with customers at work all the time with questions like this. It really just depends on when it gets through the many systems a payment goes through.

Maybe 3 million.

Do we have any idea of how large this initial shipment was? I mean, just how fast are these things selling?

That is a rough guest based on the rumors of production plans for 3 million a month. Then again I would expect them to have more than that available for launch. I suspect that people will be very surprised at the actual numbers.

Early July isn't bad, I was just hoping to have my birthday present to myself on my actual birthday. Oh well, it doesn't matter anyway the site is still giving me the same errors it did all day. Maybe I'll try my luck on release day, it worked for my 3G... may it rest in pieces.

I had to get it from the AT&T store.
So it's backordered and saying it won't get to my house until July 5th.

I'm really pissed.

Why are they charging me $58 in tax? My total came to $257.40. I read about the "charging tax on the full price of $599". That's BS. (Yah I'm in Cali).
Did the ATT site also charge that tax amount? Or just Apple?

it is CA state law. Sales tax is due on the retail amount. If you get a "free" phone you still owe money on the taxes the phone would have cost.

The subsidy game is also a hustle around the sales tax. The cell service providers knock off around 66-100% of the price of the phone off the "buy" transaction, but then go about collecting the difference in price anyway. Basically they submarine the payments for the rest into a money transfer stream that isn't taxed (as much and often at fixed amounts. 911 tax , etc. ). Several years ago someone in the Legsitature called "********" on that hustle and sponsered a bill to cancel the effect of that hustle.

Suggestion to Apple:

Next huge release, roll out pre-order by State, with an allotment for each state.
...

Even better suggestion to AT&T and Apple ... dump the whole early eligibility thing. That was a huge contributor to the stampede. If the folks who would have had to wait another 1-6 months to upgrade had just upgraded on schedule, that would have dropped the number of folks stampeding to get one.

If someone at AT&T thought that up .... they are clueless. If AT&T took it after Apple suggested it they are even more clueless.

Yeah there would have folks moaning and whining.... but with stampede you still have folks moaning and whining... just perhaps a different set.

What is whacked is how wide spread the hysteria that if don't get an iPhone 4 within the first 1 week or so of release it won't have just as much value. That's bunk. The vast majority of folks are going to buy them before the end of the year were going to be outside of the first 4-6 weeks anyway.

All customers should preorder at Best Buy while you still can. I preordered mine at Apple and at Best Buy. Apple doesn't require a deposit up front but Best Buy does ($50).

I tried. Both of the Best Buys in my area are sold out of pre-orders. Guess it's good I wanted white.

I was up at 3 in the morning, and tried to order for 3 ****ing hours, and could never complete an order. I was finally able to order when I got home from work tonight, but they say July 2nd.

I'm gonna try to get one in store on or around the 24th and just see if I can cancel the preorder after that.

Just have to wonder about this, when I finally got the pre-order working (with the new date, just to see what the darned thing looked like :p), I got a $99 voice charge as my "current voice plan" or something. I had this earlier in the day, and I didn't order a phone because of it, as I pay $79 a month. Am I having an AT&T issue with a wrong account or something? I don't want a ton of stress on launch day, and it would be nice to get it out of the way now...

Pre-order & Reservation

Folks,
I was able to pre-order on AT&T's site this afternoon PST and it says arrival date of 24th. I also have a reservation from Apple Online Store from last night's order.

Since I have not yet received an email from AT&T confirming the pre-order should I hold onto the reservation or just give it to someone who could try their luck in the local Apple Store.

I wish people would stop complaining. Especially those who know nothing about how servers/databases/traffic/etc work.

They didn't screw up. WE all hit their sites too hard, too fast, too much. They could have done things to help this, but its pretty tough to handle the amount of traffic they did.

They managed to sell out, so it obviously worked for plenty of people.

I decided to wait since the white's got pulled. I just hope that doesn't August. :(

What's WHACK is people like me tried for 2 hours @ 4AM (EST).
Then tried for 1 hour before work around 8AM.

And even though we're the most passionate group, we have to wait until July because of AT&T's incompetence.

I mean, it's just a phone, the world doesn't revolve around me. But seriously? C'mon. Not cool. :(

Stop, just stop. We bombed their site. How could you expect it to hold up? They did nothing wrong.

Class action lawsuit time! :D

I am pretty upset at this whole situation. I tried all day with no results and now it shows them not shipping until July and no more pre orders. Also, the guy at my local Apple Store said that coming first thing in the morning of launch won't get me a phone.

Question: I ordered mine on the online store. I Am elidgable for an upgrade and my girlfriend isn't. I bought a 32GB on my account and got the discount. For *hits and giggles, I put my info in again to get her a 16GB and it gave me the discount again. Will I have problems activating it?
