Not enough space?

...then stop selling 8GB models!!! I kid you not, I had to back up and restore my iPhone 4S to factory settings just to upgrade to iOS 8.

Its hard to imagine what Apples problem is.

Every year since 1991 I've bought something new like a desktop, notebook, or now iOS devices from Apple because I could, and enjoy being an Apple enthusiast.

My point is that until the last few years Apple's quality, nearly bug free new products built the reputation they currently enjoy. Just when they're loaded with money, prestige, and successful sales they begin to falter.

Procrastinating for over two years with nothing but stubborn refusal to listen to their customers and include larger screen smartphones, now its buggy iOS issues they fail to resolve before release.

No wonder more of their past supporters are now their detractors. Its as though Apple is convinced they're never going to experience a decline in business.

I've seen people look at me like i'm crazy after finding out i use iTunes for my media consumption but not even once people questioned my mental health when it comes to using it to upgrade my iPhone, it's the natural more safe way to do it, OTA is not safer than iTunes upgrade, it's hassle free yes but not safer.

32GB should be the standard base model, i feel for people who bought a 16GB device and now have to put their data aside just to update their phone.

There was never any stagnation, iOS 8 adoption has increased steadily the whole time. The illusion of stagnation was caused by one single misinterpreted Apple data point which exaggerated the number of adopters in the first couple days (because these early adopters downloaded a huge number of updates right after upgrading- Apple figures are for app downloads). The fact that MR still doesn't get this is pretty obtuse.

Apple needs to make it so iOS supports older hardware. They need to offer legacy support. They need to fall back gracefully on features that the hardware can't handle. It's very doable and they have BILLIONS in the bank to support this sort of work. It is environmentally friendly and would bring in hundreds of millions of users from the cold.

Same goes for MacOS X.

They already do that with OS X and people bitch about it. Look at the top comments here.

Is iOS 8.1 any better on iPhone 4S? I have 2 of them I'd like to upgrade, but I won't until they make it not suck.

Starts with "hey , you lazy f$cks..."
Seriously though, unless you have the lowest hardware supported, why wouldn't you update as soon as you know the bugs are worked out (looking at you iOS 8.0.1).

Why wouldn't you automatically update? Why would you? If your phone is working for you with the installed software, then leave it alone. Updating software for the sake of it makes no sense and it has the potential to have disastrous consequences.

iOS 8 - The iPad 3 Performance Killer

YUP. My ipad 3 (the NEW ipad or maybe it is called ipad 3 with retina display?) is really quite terrible now. I wish i didn't update the ipad. Hindsight. maybe the next dot release will speed it up a little. Not holding out much hope.

So annoying. Don't they know that many users' devices will be rendered much slower if they upgrade? Android doesn't bother me to upgrade...

I did it because I couldn't get Continuity to work on iOS 7.

BREAKING NEWS - Apple Sends Email to customers...

Slow news day I guess!
Or did MacRumors just pick up a news editor from CNN!

Just kidding guys - keep up the good work!

Don't. It still isn't better, and be very certain that 8.2 fixes it before you do it by checking multiple references. My friend at Apple when I asked him said the performance on the 4S would probably be "horrible"... referring to 8.0 at the time before it was out. Even if 8.2 is tolerable, it will probably be worse than 7 even if it is better than the lag fest it is currently.

My Nexus 4 would automatically download the KitKat updates and then annoy me with an icon at the top of the screen. When I pulled down the notification, there was the message that an OS update was ready.

It depends on the phone.

I have a 6+ and am fully updated. I notice that various programs get stuck in horizontal mode after I use touch ID. I then I have to go back to the home screen and then open the program again to get it vertical.

'Our iPhones can't repel updates of that magnitude!'

I think the point there was that the most use from Apple Pay comes from phones that can do NFC like iPhone 6 and 6+ and those phones are by default already on iOS 8 as they don't support any earlier versions. So most who have updated to iOS 8 because of Apple Pay would have been those with iPhone 6 and 6+ and thus would have already been on iOS 8 even before going to 8.1, thus not really changing the adoption numbers by going to 8.1.

True, but that part of the article felt like some background on why Apple would be sending emails out - iOS 8's adoption rate - rather than "People should upgrade to iOS 8 to use Apple Pay".

It's terrible on iPad 2. I thought my mum was exaggerating when she said it was so slow and frustrating she didn't want to use it. But I played with it tonight, and she was right.

If 8.1.1 doesn't fix the problems then I'll try 'downgrade' it to iOS 7.
