I was helping someone upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. Even with iTunes I couldn't do it. Even with iTunes it requires over 600MB of space. And if I do OTA, it will require over 2.3GB of space.

Apple should absolutely stop selling 16GB iPhones. This is totally hurting their image.

I'll upgrade to iOS 8 when Mac OS Yosemite has been updated and proven stable. There is NO WAY I'd install the current version of Yosemite on any of my Macs. I suspect it will be at least 4-5 months before I feel it's safe.

Heck, I won't even install iTunes 12 under Mavericks because I don't want to give up the FULL sidebar in iTunes. At least with iTunes 11, turning on the FULL sidebar is just a menu check. But Apple had to go and remove that capability in iTunes 12. WHY?

Apple continues to take away CHOICE in favor of FORCING customers to accept certain different user interface features. I, for one, am sick of it.

I'm always the outlier

It somehow didn't occur to me that there was another way to update the OS on my 16GB iPad Mini with Retina. (I know, stupid.) But I deleted maybe ten apps that I could do without and made the room. Then, of course, they still show up in the "Purchased" list, so I restored a couple; but by and large, I picked the apps that I wasn't using and I didn't need.

It is amazing how many here think you SHOULD or MUST upgrade.

Why?

People are doing just fine with the old version. The phone works. Their Facebook app works. Messaging works.

Why should they upgrade and then have to learn some new stuff that Jony Ive and friends think is BETTER.

UPGRADE does not always mean BETTER.

My mother told me that she had a notice from Apple saying that there was an update for her iPhone. I asked her if she was happy with the way her iPhone was working. She replied, "Oh, yes." No need to update then.:)

Hey Apple, I'd like to thank you for individually monitoring my usage and noting what I have and haven't done with my personal property.

Might I make a suggestion... Improve security and actually give me some privacy. You claim to be very concerned about my privacy, yet you apparently are monitoring each individual phone owner. Love the hypocracy. That's one thing we love about you Apple, your forked tongue and being able to convincingly promise that our privacy is your highest priority.

All the Apple security measures in the world is worhtless IF your Cellphone Carrier doesn't have sufficient account security authentication in place!

It's terrible on iPad 2. I thought my mum was exaggerating when she said it was so slow and frustrating she didn't want to use it. But I played with it tonight, and she was right.

If 8.1.1 doesn't fix the problems then I'll try 'downgrade' it to iOS 7.
You can't downgrade to iOS 7.

Starts with "hey , you lazy f$cks..."
Seriously though, unless you have the lowest hardware supported, why wouldn't you update as soon as you know the bugs are worked out (looking at you iOS 8.0.1).

Why would I want iOS 8? Nothing but risks involved with that. And I'd lose my jailbreak.

Funny isn't it because for me, iOS 8 has been a dream. What on earth are people doing with their devices nowadays?

iTunes install not magic - still need SOME free space

You still need SOME free space, as Apple acknowledges but this MacRumors article does not, to install iOS 8 via iTunes.
The tech press has been doing everyone a disservice by not making this clear.
I found that you need about 1.6-1.8 GB of free space to upgrade via iTunes, of which about 1 GB is "permanently lost" due to the larger size of the OS.
Yes, this is a big improvement over the 5 GB needed for over-the-air.

IOS 8 killed my iPad 3. Don't update to iOS 8 if you have an older device. It lags nonstop. Unresponsive. Pressing Home button takes 3-5 seconds to go back home. One tab kills safari. Already did erase all settings and content, already disabled all that could be disabled. Nothing. It's a shame we can't go back to iOS 7.

I know, right. Just because youre not experience something. It must not be happening. Confusing world you must live in.

Yeah, let me 'upgrade' to a bloated operating system that's widely reported to be buggy and slow down performance.

Thanks but no thanks, ios7 stays put.

It's not what people are doing to their devices, but rather more that some see the occassional lag, endless bugs, frames dropping and choose not to deal with it until Apple releases a stable update that doesn't compromise performance. There are instances where iOS 8 suffers, but perhaps it isn't big enough for you to get bothered by, or maybe you haven't noticed it yet.

exactly, I've learned a bit regarding updating over the years... I will update when it's actually needed for some reason... (10.9.5 & 7.1 will stay around for quite a while in my home, I think.)

Anyone with a 16GB would be getting screwed updating to iOS 8, you have to delete damn near 2/3 of everything on your device

The number would have been higher if Apple allowed us to downgrade if we so choose. Forcing iOS 7 down my throat on an iPhone 4S was a painful experience that I will not repeat.

So annoying. Don't they know that many users' devices will be rendered much slower if they upgrade? Android doesn't bother me to upgrade...

I started out with Android since Apple didn't support LTE at the time, but my HTC seldom, if ever, got updates. Often buggy. It also ate batteries. I finally got fed up and switched to iPhone for better security and updates. I don't see myself going back even with new OS glitches. I know they will be fixed

I was hoping they would offer upgrades at the apple store. They could do it like a kiosk with a dedicated person to man it. This gets people in the store and keeps everyone upgraded. I also think it would show something they can do that other can not do.

Since it would have to back up your phone and data in order to update and restore your information, doing it at a store would be a huge privacy issue. Not that they aren't watching us anyway... just that there would be a huge public opposition to syncing our phones in an Apple store on machines that are not ours.

Tastes like Chicken????

Is this like the spammy hey why don't you get Yosemite for free and there's a new version of Pages "helpful" reminders from Apple?

Gotta love getting spammed from your own computer.
