Before I take a one way trip down the iOS 8 rabbit hole, I'd like some hard evidence that it isn't going to turn my older devices into ultra slow battery sucking paperweights. It works fine on my iPad Air, but I'm not willing to risk updating my phones or 3rd gen iPad.

I will not update to iOS8 ever. There's nothing in iOS8 that makes it feel like there are real features to be had. It's extremely buggy, and most important. I do not want my 5s to slow down and feel like a 4 year old piece of crap.

I'm not seeing any of these so called bugs. I updated my 5S and Retina Mini.

@ Apple: make iOS8 usable for iPhone 4 and you have (at least) one more user of iOS8. But don't expect me to buy a new phone only to make better pictures and videos ....

I think it's a non-issue. If you don't want to upgrade - don't. Not sure why we have people saying "I'm not upgrading to iOS 8" and other people saying "You're only hurting yourself by not upgrading to iOS 8". Do whatever you want, it's fine either way.

My iPad Air was perfect before ios8. Now it freezes up and sometimes, I have to tap on a link half a dozen times for it to work. This is the last ipad I'm buying and I've had them since they first came out.

Before you label me some kind of Apple hater... I have 2 airport extremes, an iPad Air, an iPad mini retina, a MacBook Air, and an Apple TV.

Everytime I update my 16 GB iPhone 5...

Settings>General>Software Update>iOS 8.1 96.1MB>"Needs 1.5GB free of storage">Usage>Delete "App A">General>Software Update>iOS 8.1 96.1MB>"Needs 1.5GB free of storage">Usage>Delete "App B">General>Software Update>iOS 8.1 96.1MB>"Needs 1.5GB free of storage">Usage>Delete "App C">General>Software Update>iOS 8.1 96.1MB>"Needs 1.5GB free of storage">Usage>Delete "App D">General>Software Update>iOS 8.1 96.1MB>Download and Install>Downloading>Preparing for Update>Verifying Update>Server Error>Install>Verifying Update>Installing>Updated>Reboot

I wasn't completely thrilled with iOS 8 experience on my 5s, so I held off updating my rMini. Now that I have the 6, it's a bit different (in a good way). But I'll still continue to run iOS 7 on my rMini for the time being.

Can't one of the reasons for the low adoption percent also be that there are still quite a lot of people fith the iphone 4? Those people can't upgrade but should count towards the people who have not upgraded.
Know quite a lot of people who still prefer their iphone 4 because of the size and since they don't play games and only use basic features they won't buy a new phone until theirs stopps working compleatly.

Exactly why my iPhone 5 is running 7.1.2 and I couldn't be happier.

Is it the same problem with the YOSEMITE because i feel my mack
a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
is running slightly slower? then if it was in maverick?

will there be updates?
will they ever go back ?

also.....

I bought my Grandmother an iPhone 4 and someone changed her contact list so it has alphabetic ordering , I wonder if anyone could tell me how I can change it back?

i have no idea how to alter its listing method.

"Please install iOS 8 immediately. There is an important root kit that will need to deploy to keep all information on your iPhone secure. Only you and Apple will have access to this information after the iOS 8 update."

If they really wanted to see adoption skyrocket, they'd bundle another U2 album with the OS.

Or even better a nickelback album.

Having the same issues with my air as well. I thought airs would have been safe from issues as it is only a year old.

You know it's a shame on this forum you have to put a disclaimer that you are not anti-Apple at the end of posts criticizing a product or os of apple. People assume you have to either love or hate apple. People don't realize there is a middle ground.

Been bitten too many times by Apple's "upgrades." It usually means my device is suddenly slower and less responsive and makes me wish I had a new device. Hey wait a second...

Your DOWNGRADE is waiting for you that will make your phone slower, uglier and buggier. Downgrade today! :apple:

You only have to read the part of the sentence you omitted in your quote:

Over the course of the last week, iOS 8 adoption numbers have picked up somewhat, after Apple introduced new features like Apple Pay with the recent iOS 8.1 update.

The article is explaining how iOS 8 adoption numbers have picked up, due to such features as Apple Pay.

That makes little sense. The interesting aspects of Apple Pay are supported only on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both of which run iOS 8 from the factory. How could that feature possibly entice anyone to upgrade to iOS 8 from iOS 7? Upgrade from iOS 8 to 8.1, sure, but not upgrade to iOS 8.x....

So yeah, Apple's stingy base NAND specs have finally returned to bite them in the arse. Also, people can't figure out how to upgrade their iPhones using iTunes. These aren't Mac users - millions of them are too stupid to use a computer. An email won't solve the problem.

It has nothing to do with stingy NAND specs and everything to do with three software design decisions:

  1. iTunes automatically fills your device with as much content as it can.
  2. iOS does not reserve space for OS upgrades.
  3. iOS does not treat content imported from your Mac as purgeable.

Change any one of those three preconditions, and future upgrades will no longer be a problem for most users. Ideally, they should change #2 and #3:

  • If you haven't synced the device with a computer, it should reserve enough space for a full download of the upgrade plus additional space to extract it, which probably means that a 16 GB device will show up as having only 8GB of free storage. That's less than ideal, but it will be fully upgradeable without the use of a computer.
  • If you have synced the device with a computer, it should reserve about 2–3 GB above and beyond the OS itself, to ensure that there is enough space for an iTunes-based upgrade. It should mark any content originally uploaded from that computer (e.g. iTunes music, videos, externally provided photos, etc.) should as purgeable.

They could also optionally allow iTunes-redownloadable content to be purgeable if the user hasn't synced, which would make more space available for end-user content.

When iOS determines that it cannot install without purging stuff, it should inform you that:

"This device must temporarily remove some iTunes-provided content to make room for the iOS x.x software update. Please sync the device with your Mac or PC after the update to restore the removed content. (Cancel) (Continue)"

or in the case of purgeable content on a never-synced device:

"This device must temporarily remove some iTunes-provided content to make room for the iOS x.x software update. The removed content will be automatically redownloaded from iTunes after the update finishes. (Cancel) (Continue)"

The device should then log what content it removed, and iTunes should restore that content after the next sync, and/or the device should begin downloading that content after the next reboot.

In the rare situation where the device cannot free enough space by purging content (the download is too big for the remaining space), it should tell you that:

"This device does not have enough space to install the the iOS x.x software update. Please install the update using iTunes. (Cancel)"

It should then purge the partial download, and because the 2GB of reserved space should be enough for iTunes-based installation, you should never run into a situation where the user is forced to manually purge and restore content.
