Since it would have to back up your phone and data in order to update and restore your information, doing it at a store would be a huge privacy issue. Not that they aren't watching us anyway... just that there would be a huge public opposition to syncing our phones in an Apple store on machines that are not ours.

They have custom computers now to activate phones I am sure they could do it. This is apple a custom solution is what I was thinking. This would also be used during phone upgrades in store to allow for faster upgrades for users.

I all about privacy so it would need a destruction and encryption part built into it.

It would also be a stand alone app and look nothing like iTunes to convey the message custom service.

My mother told me that she had a notice from Apple saying that there was an update for her iPhone. I asked her if she was happy with the way her iPhone was working. She replied, "Oh, yes." No need to update then.:)

And there is the answer.

Pretty sure she would not want to upgrade her mac either.. and deal with new icons, and "translucency". Why does anyone want that?

iPhone 5s guy here! Nothing enticing for me that's new! Anyway, I don't upgrade any of my many programs and software for at lease 3 months just to make sure the bugs are done!

Why the heck would they do this before releasing the bug fixes in ios 8.1.1?

Really dumb move to subject even more users to the drivability nightmares that are still unresolved.

I have never seen safari be so sticky or jittery or lose its place or not smoothly swipe back to the correct previous page or hang when typing a short cut or backspace ing to correct a typo or not scroll the window up above the keyboard to prevent typing blind (as I'm doing now) or require the use re user to toggle back and forth between the home screen and Safari until it crashes...

Or how about the daily reboot to the apple on the 4s?

And it is not just the 4s as we have seen in ipad 3 and mini 1 and two6 128GB too... Very in appropriate to invite users to download headaches before fixes are released...

I should also add that many focus on the aesthetics or new features of a major ios annual update but there are many under the hood security features that make the phone safer and more secure.

By introducing and gaining a reputation for for drivability problems, customers lose their confidence in "just works" performance and -storage space shortcomings not withstanding- will be lithe to install updates with critical security improvements.

Just look at all the people still clinging to Dnow Leopard OS X for one aesthetic or performance reason or another...

Anything that impedes installation will wreck reputation in the long run as most users are far too I dpecific to speak or think in terms of which update or point fix they are discussing with another person; all they know is they don't like it and they are not updating. This opens opportunity for any competitor to exploit.

My iPhone 5 is staying on iOS6, and my 5S on iOS7! I will never let you reach 100% adoption rate, apple! >:0

I'm in the same place. iPhone 5 on 6.1.2, and iPad mini 2 on 7.0.4, which was the OS as it shipped from Apple.

If there was a way to get get 6.1.2 on my iPad, I would.

----------

Given Apple's track record of how older hardware performs on newer iOS's - there is no way I am upgrading my devices, even if they pay me to. I just wish Apple would give up its obsession with supporting older hardware with newer software - just provide the newer OS to the latest hardware and move on. I would be perfectly happy to maintain the same performance the device originally shipped with.

I have some to a personal decision that Apple's ios devices were never meant to be upgraded by a major point release, i.e. 6.0-> 6.1 or 7.0->7.1 is probably OK. 6.x->7.x or 7.x ->8.x is just falling into the planned obsolescence thing.

if you upgrade you iDevices every year or every other year, it may be OK. On the iPhone specifically, I went from an original 16Gb iPhone ver 1 to the iPhone 5.

So, they need more beta testers for iOS 8
Right?! Mail and Messaging apps are buggy, Siri is still a dumbass, location service options for apps are horrible, and their is no way to stop calls from my iPhone going to my laptop!

iOS 8 too resource-hungry

I don't think a lack of space is the only or even the major problem with the slow adaption rate.

iOS 8 is simply too resource-intensive. I've installed it on my iPhone 4S and ever since my phone is painfully slow. Apps take a lot longer to load, and it takes longer to switch between them. Performance within apps has suffered, too. Everybody I know with an iPhone 4S or 5C has similar problems.

As a consequence I discouraged all my friends from updating unless they have an iPhone 5S. Having a faster and more responsive phone is clearly worth more than the few benefits you get from the update.

I assume there are a lot of people out there with a slow phone after the update discouraging others from updating.

For iOS 9, Apple should try to make the operating system less resource-intensive, not more.

iOS 8 is riddled with bugs. Safari has always been one of the best things about the iPhone. And surprisingly it's Safari and wifi that seem to be the biggest culprits.

Apple is really failing lately. From the massive fail on the live stream to the borking of iPhones with 8.0.1 to the bugs in iOS 8 and Yosemite...

They need to chill out with the money grab and pay more attention to producing a polished product. Either that or change the saying to "it just barely works".

I would highly recommend not to install iOS 8 and Yosemite if you value your sanity. And a big FU to Apple.

Man if you wanna use software you need to be a little more forgiving of a couple of bugs in a new release. Yosemite works absolutely great, it's a great update. Of course there are some bugs and Apple should try to release software with as few bugs as possible, and they can certainly improve on future updates, but the mere fact how Microsoft is faring should show you how difficult it must obviously be to release a bug-free piece of software if the two main OS manufacturers in the world with the best software engineers in the world can't manage to get it done. And Apple is still doing a lot better than other software manufacturers. I'm not saying that Apple should use this as an excuse to release mediocre software, but you have to get a little more understanding for the complexity of the process, not just think, "I don't care, I want it to be perfect!". Of course there will always be bugs in a public release. Millions of users always see much more and experience many more different use cases than a couple thousand beta testers are possibly able to.

Hmm well even with 8.1 my Bluetooth performance is still jacked up, random disconnects with multiple brand headsets.

email messages, slide to left bug, appears where you slide and messages go right into the trash before you know what happened.

Oh, and all the Movie, TV, Home Video artwork for user created content that has never been an issue on any release I can remember is now not showing most of the artwork, requiring re-sizing all artwork if you want to see covers.

Ya, it's just great.

I'm very happy with ios 8.1 on 5s and 5c. Not so happy with 4s... still wifi problems... :(

Poll

A few hours before MacRumors published this news about e-mails from Apple … pure coincidence:

How likely is it that you would recommend iOS 8.x to a friend or colleague?

If you wish to vote, please do so first. It's intentionally a very simple poll. With a focus on the likelihood of you recommending – nothing else – I guess that it should take you less than thirty seconds to decide which button to click.

First vote, then (if you're interested) there are links to articles that give some background to the nature of the poll.

Translation:

Apple: We have noticed that you are using a 2 year old piece of hardware, that means we haven't received any money from you in a long time. Please upgrade so we can make your device unusable so you need to pay us again.

It's all about quickly buttressing the cash cow that is the space rental business that is iCloud, in addition to Apple Pay.

And make no mistake. That big design change to flat icons was expressly to creat consistency so that minuscule versions of icons are legible on a watch face.

My iPhone 4S is slow enough as it is with iOS 7, I don't want it even slower.

Resource Hunger is not a trait unique to iOS 8. The same pattern played out with iOS 7 on iPhone 4; iOS 6 on the 3GS and so on. Apple should not provide iOS support on older devices, unless they deliberately want to send a not-so-subliminal message to the user that it is time to upgrade.

Apple is never going to get their 100% adoption rate so long they keep the A5 processor in the list as compatible with iOS 8.
Yes, it's compatible, but it slows those iDevices considerately.

Yesterday, I've installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5S, but it has the A7 processor.

my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S stay on 6.1.2 because it has an A5 processor and if my iPod Touch (also an A5 processor) wasn't delivered with iOS 7.1, it wouldn't have gotten it.
Luckily, I use the iPod just as a music player and for all the rest I have my iPhone, so running iOS 7.1 isn't that bad.

Given how cheap storage is, Apple really should just stick in a separate tiny 8GB flash chip just for OS upgrades. It doesn't have to be blazing fast..

So many people I know haven't upgraded because they don't have enough space. They've packed out their phone with music, photos, videos and apps, as they should. Having to free up space to do an iOS upgrade is ridiculous really, given how much more difficult it is to free up space on an iOS device versus the Mac (you can plug in a USB hard drive to your Mac and move files over, can't do that with your iPhone).

I was at a Verizon Store today and overheard a gaggle of people agreeing on the need to upgrade to an iPhone 6 because it's not possible to upgrade to the newest software. One guy helpfully added "yeah, not enough space!"

So yeah, Apple's stingy base NAND specs have finally returned to bite them in the arse.

How is that biting them in the arse? A bunch of people buying new iphones (because they think that's the only way they can get the newest software) means more revenue for Apple. Maybe that was the master plan all along.

People are hurting themselves by not upgrading. It's generous Apple is taking the time to remind everyone there are huge benefits to getting the latest and greatest version of iOS loaded onto all their devices.
