Are we really going to complain about a push notification? This reminds me of a lady that called in a few years ago when I was working in tech support. She was mad because she had to click "save changes" on her profile after she updated her profile.... People just like to complain about anything and everything.

Should we wait until notifications get as crapped up as email is with SPAM?

Makes me want to smash my iPhone and switch to Android.

If you use the Music and TV apps and want notifications relevant to your subscriptions then you are de facto forced to accept Apple's ******** push ads. This is not OK.

Please do this and let us know how it works out! Stick it to them!

Seriously. This is probably the most irrelevant nit-picky concern I’ve ever heard this site complain about. There is tons to truly complain about that these users give Apple a free pass for, but getting a couple of push notices from Apple about their ecosystem improving and reversing an old terrible decision on echo.. really guys?

You spent more time of your life gliding past intrusive ads just on MacRumors in the last 45 seconds.

If apple can do it, they should allow app developers to do it. Wouldn’t that be fun?

I just want a way to turn off Notifications every day about upgrading MacOS to Mojave. You can’t close it. You can’t do anything with them other then click them and let them take you to App Store and then close that.

I can’t upgrade! I’m in the middle of a project with a legacy app that I don’t want to risk breaking. Leave me alone!

When I’m done, I can marvel about how innovative dark mode is (something so old it’s new again I guess...)

That’s the very definition of an unsolicited advertisement.

I'm not sure about that -- it's not the type of "hey, spend more money to unlock this feature" but more a "just a heads-up, you can now also do this without any extra cost". If your TV were able to show free NFL matches from Saturday onwards, wouldn't you be happy to learn about it (although you may not like the NFL)?

I agree though, the Carpool Karaoke one is a tricky one -- I'd certainly call that unsolicited.

How exactly is this unsolicited when the user elected to enable notifications for these apps?
Because Apples own App Store guidelines state this:

  • 4.5.3 Do not use Apple Services to spam, phish, or send unsolicited messages to customers, including Game Center, Push Notifications, etc. Do not attempt to reverse lookup, trace, relate, associate, mine, harvest, or otherwise exploit Player IDs, aliases, or other information obtained through Game Center, or you will be removed from the Developer Program.

Email spam is expected, but push notifications are meant to be kept at a higher standard. At least they used to be, till now I guess.

Everyone is focusing on the push notifications but the bigger story is why the heck is Apple promoting Alexa?

I posted this in the HomePod sub forum but apparently some Apple employees who worked on HomePod are livid that Apple ported Apple Music to Amazon. And they knew nothing about it until it became public. I get why they’d be upset. Apple is basically ceding the market to Amazon, all for a rounding error in services revenue.

Apple has recently been sending out unsolicited notifications to iOS users, promoting Carpool Karaoke episodes and the availability of Apple Music on Amazon Echo devices.

Multiple unwanted and unapproved notifications direct from Apple have gone out during the month of December, irritating iPhone users who aren't interested in the features that Apple is promoting.

Apple started sending out Carpool Karaoke notifications earlier this month via the TV app, letting users know that a new episode was available. It didn't take long for iPhone and iPad users to take to Twitter to complain about the unsolicited notifications.

The Apple Music Amazon Echo notifications appear to have gone out today, based on multiple reports from Twitter users who received the info from Apple. Apple Music support for Amazon Echo devices rolled out last Friday.

Apple doesn't appear to be sending these push notifications to all users, so it's not clear what criteria the company is using to determine who to send content to. Apple Music and the TV app, the apps that the notifications are coming from, are installed on iOS devices by default and are not apps that users elected to install.

If you've been receiving notifications from Apple, you can stop them by turning off notifications for the apps via the Settings app. Go to Notifications > Music or TV, and toggle off "Allow Notifications." Unfortunately there's no way to keep the TV or Music notifications you do want without also getting the unwanted notifications from Apple.

Apple has previously sent out unsolicited notifications on multiple occasions, but the frequency appears to be picking up. Just recently, the company sent out notifications encouraging people to upgrade to the iPhone XR or XS and letting users know about discounted iPhone XR pricing with trade-in.

Apple's App Store rules do not allow for apps to send notifications for advertising, promotions, or marketing purposes, but it appears those rules don't apply to Apple's own notifications.

[doublepost=1545193397][/doublepost]I’m not too bothered about the unsolicited contacts - join the queue, I get hundreds of these things from all sorts of sources. Apple is the least of my concerns. However, I was very annoyed to find that, after all the fanfare about Apple Music becoming available on Alexa Echo Dot on 17th December, the essential news that it would only happen in the USA was notably absent. I will now have disappointed grandkids & am thoroughly pissed off at the lack of specificity of the information. This annoyance would be much reduced if this lacuna could be resolved for us here in Australia

Personally, I've disabled all notifications except phone, e-mail, calendar and text. Even those are set to banner and badge only (badge only for e-mail). Except the phone app doesn't honor that setting and a phone call will take over whatever you are doing.

I don't need any other notifications. Just a gentle reminder to get ready to leave or that somebody is trying to contact me. I just wish the calendar notification was smart enough not to cover part of the maps app. When I am navigating to the location marked in my calendar.

My beef with notifications is that they are on by default. I can turn them off easily. But the user who doesn't know any better is plagued by them and just learns to put up with them. MS is a worse offender with constant ads in Windows 10.

Yeah, same here. Every single app and website wants to spam me with useless notifications, I don’t care about 99% of them.

More evidence that AAPL will in-deed announce that Tim Cook has stepped-down as CEO on Friday, December 28th !

NOT Rocket Science, ALL the clues are there, & have been since Nov 1st !

I got a notification via the TV app on my iPhone about new episodes of Carpool Karaoke. You know what I did? I ignored the notification and moved on with my life. But people need to be outraged by something...

Well, I honestly wonder who *wants* push notifications turned on that are related to anything other than urgent matters—financial transactions are the only thing coming to mind.

If you walk around with location settings on, updates for whatever new show Netflix is shoveling at you, and geofencing to remind you not to leave home without your brain—what difference does it make if Apple wants to sell you on one more piece of this same puzzle?

The “user who doesn’t know any better” has much bigger problems going on than an Apple advertisement via a “notification.”

To help you understand why you are wrong, think about why all of the millions of other apps in the App Store are specifically barred from sending unsolicited advertisements that are unrelated to things you’ve already shown interest in. I don’t download apps that much but still somehow accumulated hundreds of apps over the last decade. Imagine if even a fraction of them were sending me unwanted ad notifications even as infrequently as once a month or once a year. I would have dumped iOS years ago if Apple thought that kind of hellscape of constant annoyance was acceptable. Fortunately they don’t find it acceptable, which is why they banned the behavior.

Oh, but wait, Apple gets a free pass from following their own rules because: Apple.

Is it OK for me to punch you in the face as long as I don’t do it very hard and only do it once a month? Or would you maybe complain that it’s really annoying and unwanted and that you want it to stop?
