Are you being completely serious here? Or are you being sarcastic? A scummy company is a company like Halliburton that fistf—-s the environment by blowing absolutely toxic substances into the crust of the Earth to extract oil at a net cost that is just slightly lower than what it can be purchased for using established networks where the cost to the environment isn’t even 1% as toxic. Or, to use the same awesome company (I’m pretty sure) a war contractor/cheerleader with 10’s of thousands of mercenaries for hire and more weapons suppliers than component manufacturers in an iPhone supply chain.

Tim Cook isn’t Mark Zuckerberg either. There’s a guy with serious mental/emotional problems that have actually affected just about every human being living in a free democracy (however you’d like to define that).

Last time I checked Apple has made billions of devices. Foxconn et al are major polluters. Apple has its dark secrets... greed and power breeds this kind of stuff. Don’t forget that Jobs was an egomaniac...

Ive not received one. And certainly wouldn't be upset about it if I do. Wasn't upset about the U2 album either. I just deleted it. Simple. Someone somewhere probably a member here will a start class action Im sure.

Edit: in fact if you have notifications turned on for the music or tv app. Then they aren’t unsolicited you’ve agreed to accept notifications.
I agree completely. I have received them and I simply deleted them (just as I did the U2 album ages ago). If Apple were doing this several times a day I would turn off notifications but I can easily ignore an occasional notification.

Everyone is focusing on the push notifications but the bigger story is why the heck is Apple promoting Alexa?

I posted this in the HomePod sub forum but apparently some Apple employees who worked on HomePod are livid that Apple ported Apple Music to Amazon. And they knew nothing about it until it became public. I get why they’d be upset. Apple is basically ceding the market to Amazon, all for a rounding error in services revenue.

Or it's evidence that the HomePod did not sell well enough to justify it as a revenue stream and opening up Apple Music on Alexa allows Apple Music to compete better against Spotify. Taking share from Spotify is AM's most important task right now and you don't do that by trying to sell your own device, you do that by being where Spotify users already are, and they're on Alexa devices right now. This is much more than a rounding error if it works - and honestly even if it is a rounding error it's not like the HomePod revenue moved the needle either.

I've received A LOT of Apple adverts through email this season. Probably more this fall than my entire time with Apple. They are grinding hard to sell sell sell. Tim Cooks Apple is all about revenue.
Also Apple sales at Best Buy ads. Apple is pushing hard. And it’s not that best Buy knows I buy lots of Apple stuff from them (I don’t, just a watch 3 years ago and lots of tvs and thing since). It’s just Best Buy is pushing Apple hard this Christmas.

News is terrible about this. It defaults to alerting you for any new channel you add. I just disabled alerts for News completely.

Not Apple, but Verizon's app likes to sneak in promos for all kinds of crap too. Likewise, disabled.

I’m not seeing a lot of hysterics or overreacting. Just people calling out apple for not following the same rules they enforce with respect to app developers, and people pointing out that apple has done this twice in two days and it’s a bit annoying.
You didn't see the comment about "smashing their phone, and switching to Android" seems a bit overreacting to me.

Apple has recently been sending out unsolicited notifications to iOS users, promoting Carpool Karaoke episodes and the availability of Apple Music on Amazon Echo devices.

Multiple unwanted and unapproved notifications direct from Apple have gone out during the month of December, irritating iPhone users who aren't interested in the features that Apple is promoting.

Apple started sending out Carpool Karaoke notifications earlier this month via the TV app, letting users know that a new episode was available. It didn't take long for iPhone and iPad users to take to Twitter to complain about the unsolicited notifications.

The Apple Music Amazon Echo notifications appear to have gone out today, based on multiple reports from Twitter users who received the info from Apple. Apple Music support for Amazon Echo devices rolled out last Friday.

Apple doesn't appear to be sending these push notifications to all users, so it's not clear what criteria the company is using to determine who to send content to. Apple Music and the TV app, the apps that the notifications are coming from, are installed on iOS devices by default and are not apps that users elected to install.

If you've been receiving notifications from Apple, you can stop them by turning off notifications for the apps via the Settings app. Go to Notifications > Music or TV, and toggle off "Allow Notifications." Unfortunately there's no way to keep the TV or Music notifications you do want without also getting the unwanted notifications from Apple.

Apple has previously sent out unsolicited notifications on multiple occasions, but the frequency appears to be picking up. Just recently, the company sent out notifications encouraging people to upgrade to the iPhone XR or XS and letting users know about discounted iPhone XR pricing with trade-in.

Apple's App Store rules do not allow for apps to send notifications for advertising, promotions, or marketing purposes, but it appears those rules don't apply to Apple's own notifications.

This is utter ********. Why am I called upon to DO something? I didn’t ask for it, showed no interest in it so the requirement is mine? Eff that.

If you use their Music app, I wouldn't call this totally unsolicited.

Besides Apple is the manufacturer of the device and the software. They have an obligation to inform their users of new features like battery management Apple Music on Amazon Echo.
Is it OK for me to punch you in the face as long as I don’t do it very hard and only do it once a month? Or would you maybe complain that it’s really annoying and unwanted and that you want it to stop?

To compare a push notification to a punch is a bit exaggerated. It's more like a light tap because that's what it is: light tap on your shoulder, "hey we've got this feature you can look at." My friends tap me all the time to let me know of something. By being in the Apple ecosystem you have immersed into a relationship with Apple whether or not you realize it or not.

Yes I know there are plenty of people that overreact to people's taps, "OMG you assaulted me you MFer, I'll kill you if you do that again." o_O

It’s their platform and they can have all the exceptions they want.

Precisely why I don’t swallow Cook’s claims or assurances about Apple’s righteousness. No tech company is trustworthy. There are no crippling penalties if they fail to follow through on their assurances.

The New York Times just reported that Facebook collects more user data than anyone—even Google. And Facebook exempted symbiotic partners, like Microsoft and Amazon, from privacy assurances made to Facebook’s users. Facebook also has sharing agreements with phone manufacturers—including Apple—to allow the platforms to disreetly disregard the sharing preferences of Facebook’s app users.

When you scrutinize Apple’s carefully worded PR, you find all sorts of potential slight of hands that would protect Apple from legal challenges. When Cook says that Apple doesn’t collect and exploit customer data, he doesn’t assure us that Apple doesn’t let others do it fo them.

Personally, I've disabled all notifications except phone, e-mail, calendar and text. Even those are set to banner and badge only (badge only for e-mail). Except the phone app doesn't honor that setting and a phone call will take over whatever you are doing.

Pointing out that a phone call isn't a notification.

Did anyone receive the push notification and not have an Apple Music subscription?

It makes perfect sense to advertise new features and content if you have an active subscription.

The Phone app is listed in the notifications section. As the Phone app has a banner option. Calls should behave as a banner. Otherwise the option makes little sense. Phone calls aren't all important to everyone. I see no reason why Apple shouldn't make calls innocuous if they so choose. Also to maintain consistency in their UI.

A text message isn't a notification either. If I set it to banner it shows as a banner. Neither is an e-mail. But it behaves.

You can hit decline. Hitting decline makes the person know they were declined by being bumped too quickly to voicemail.

There is Do Not Disturb. It is too aggressive.

Should we wait until notifications get as crapped up as email is with SPAM?
You are right on the money sir! Bam. It's going the same route. I didn't pay a premium for BS advertising. Karaoke thing is garbage in my book. So just makes me want to see it go away even more.

Did he not comb through the settings when he first got an iPhone? There are setting in iOS that allow these sort of notifications.

Yup, and it applies to missed call and voicemail notifications.

I have a subscription until the free VZW 6-months thing expires, although I'm not using it. Apple Music is as bad as it was the last time I tried it.

And of course notifications are off for the Music app in any case. What possible reason could there be for them to be on?

If you spent half the energy you used to rant about Mojave (which by the way is the best OS Apple has shipped in years and my legacy apps work perfectly on it) into solving your "problem", you would realise you can turn off update notifications.
I'm back at my Mac and that is NOT an option.

Sure, you can turn off auto download of ALL updates, but if you leave that on, Apple will constantly pester you about Mojave. And they don't give you any way to close the notification, only INSTALL or DETAILS. Both of those bring you to the App Store.

The notification pops up over key parts of open windows. I can choose to shrink all windows so that the notifications don't overlap, but that means I give up 1/10th of the screen to Apple push notifications...

lol.. we continue to know you well.

An email would be better... That what least you can unsubscribe from Apple. Notifications are useful, but email is less intrusive.

"Apple's App Store rules do not allow for apps to send notifications for advertising, promotions, or marketing purposes, but it appears those rules don't apply to Apple's own notifications."

Apple's turning into a Spammy service? "you cant do it, but guess what "We' can"

Yes it is. A quick Google search could have told you this.

System Preferences > App Store > uncheck Automatically Check For Updates.

I'm missing something. My laptop and desktop are both on HS. I have zero intention of moving to Mojave before September next year. And I've not received a single notification about Mojave.

Now, I *did* download the installer. And it's off in my OS Installers folder with all the other ones, where it belongs. Maybe that's why the prompt doesn't happen.
