The majority of the population in the UK don't have a credit card. Most people do have some form of debit card though.

Apple should be apologising here - contrary to what some earlier posters have said, this is a criminal offense in the UK, and I am surprised they are not offering something a bit more substantial because if anyone presses charges they are likely to end up in court.

Phazer

Actually, statistics show that about two thirds of the UK have at least one credit card. That's the majority.

I was going to challenge that post too. Here's some more UK credit trivia.

According to the latest annual report from the APACS nearly two thirds of adults have a credit card and multiple card holding is a growing phenomenon in the UK. More than six in ten card holders held more than one card in 2004, with one in ten holding at least five.

There are more credit cards in the UK than people according to the APACS. At the end of 2004 there were 74.3m credit and charge cards in the UK compared with around 59 million people in the country.

"Actually, statistics show that about two thirds of the UK have at least one credit card. That's the majority."

Cleary, Apple is no longer "The computer for the rest of us."

Credit cards are something of the past. Today, we pay directly through our Internet bank when buying stuff online. Would be great if Apple also could enter the 21th century. Or, at least, let people sign up and then be able to transfer money (by paying an electronic invoice at their regular Internet bank) to an ITMS account when they want to fill up their credit and actually buy stuff. I still strongly argue the need to have a credit card and give Apple access to it just to download free third-party apps, free music, free album covers etc. Then they wouldn't be in this situation.

they are becoming like Microsoft!

just kidding...

this was a rough start. Glad to see apple apologizing. But have they totally gotten rid of .mac? I think they need to get mobile me working all the way before doing anything more

This is why I am ALWAYS SKEPTICAL of "free" trials that require a credit card!!!

A lot of banks have virtual credit card numbers, you generate a new number with a specific amount allocated to it. That's the way to go if you're worried about getting charged.

I do not like apple apologizing every other day. It`s not going to help them increase their brand value. Once in a while is good but not every week. It was a small error. They rectified it, that should be it. No real need for another 30 day extension. I know those who get it will be happy but no one would have buzzed if no such freebie was awarded. They pleased the one percent of their potential customers but for the rest of the potential buyers mobileme is sounding more and more like a mess with troubles showing up everyday.

Many people live paycheck to pay check and probably were overdrawn in their checking accounts if they used debit.

You're worried about Apple's image when they potentially have made life miserable for many that were counting on that $99 to feed them the rest of the week and put gas in their tanks.

When will all of the APPLE SHEEP get real. MobileMe is MobileVista.

This has been a mess so far and I still can't synch my calendars from my computers or iPhone.

Mistakes like this happen all the time and don't make the news, Apple were somewhat unfortunate in the timing of it with everything else that's gone wrong recently which make it look a lot worse than it is.

But Apple appear to be doing the right thing. The compensation might not seem like much but they're trying to get the holds lifted asap as well. I'm sure that if anyone has a cash flow problem or incurs bank charges because of this their bank will be sympathetic and if necessary Apple will reimburse people for the charges.

I worked for a bank before and we debited the monthly credit card payment from customers accounts twice by accident. Anyone who incurred bank charges as a result was reimbursed for them without question, which is pretty much standard practice for things like this.

Its easy to forget that this was probably caused by a single person who accidentally pressed a few wrong keys at the wrong time. Sh*t happens.

It is approximately $250.

The article specifically says: "preauthorizing charges up to 121 GBP"

That does convert to roughly $250 in American Dollars.

Just because their money is worth more than ours does not diminish the effective value of the money from being approximately $250 in our terms.

Now, to be exact, the actual value is $241.47 in U.S. Dollars.

But, for the purpose of discussions, $250 is a reasonable estimation.

Or, you could round it down to $240. But, for discussion purposes, the difference of $241.47 and $250 is irrelevant.

Or, use the unit converter in your dashboard

Not trying to piss into the wind here, so-to-speak, but for all intents and purposes anyone living and working in the UK doesn't see it as being $240/$250/$241.47. They see it as 121 GBP, which in the UK offers roughly the same purchasing power as $121 USD would. This is why apple charges 121 GBP for the service and not 59 GBP for it.

So, really it would be like having $120 missing from your US account; not $250.

No I think you are. If I can't use £121 of the funds in my bank account, then that's as equivalent to apple taking £121 and paying it back when they cancel the hold. I can't use the money.

You can't blame Apple for the way the banking institutions work. They are the ones who have your money, actually, and they decide how long holds last for (because they don't trust you at all, same reason they hold deposits for a couple of days if they are large enough). Unfortunately, Apple is the victim of the arcane banking system that doesn't like doing anything quickly.

MobileMe is getting quite the reputation for being a total shambles. I could accept server problems upon rollout. Redefining 'Push' was not good. Holding £121? Damaging at best.

Is it me, or did Apple's QA and Customer Service take a severe downturn these past few years?

I wish I knew what was going on with Apple. No one at corporate will tell us how or why things are going they way they are. We had countless people yelling at us about the iPhone rollout and the Mobile me. So many of at Apple are ready to quit

massive fraud

it is so outrageous hearing the apple faithful jump on board here...

"oh, they made a little mistake and they are doing what's right by offering an extension"

this is no small deal. how many credit card accounts have had funds locked? hundreds? thousands?

this is nothing short of fraudulent. "oh they were rushed... people make mistakes... here is our apology"

sorry, doesn't cut it. Apple should be hit with massive fines and there should be some level of monetary compensation for all who were affected.

the whole mobileMe/3g/iphone2.0 launch was a complete disaster on every level.

what about "we will be able to activate 100 accounts per hour at our retail stores" crap?

these guys are never taken to task on their lies wrapped in pretty packages.

If microsoft truly is going to respond to the "ima pc/mac" ads they have plenty of ammunition.

As a result, affected users will get a total of 120 days of free trial MobileMe service before they are required to start their subscription.

Wow! Who here is willing to bet that there will be another MobileMe gaffe that will cause Apple to offer another free 30 Day extension? At this rate, people will get a "free year" of service and kind of makes me wish I had signed up.

The July 11th worldwide weekend launch may have been successful from a "units sold" point of view, but the fact that there are more than usual the number of posters commenting on their poor experiences will make Apple's "success" dubious and just like Barry Bonds Home Run Record, let us put an asterik by Apples launch.

1 Million iPhones sold on opening weekend by Apple*.

This argument floats as well as the Titanic!

If someone is 'living paycheck to paycheck' and Apple's error put on hold that $99 for a select few who needed "to feed the rest of the week or put gas in their tanks" one would think they would be out securing another job so as to not be so close to a financial precipice.

I don't care if it is a "Free Trial Offer"... they can afford a computer... they can afford to get off that computer and get back on the hunt for additional income or if they already have two, or three jobs, they need to learn to budget their income wisely because even looking at MobileMe while needing $99 for food or gas, shows they need a little more work on getting their life's priorities straight.

All I can say is...while this situation never should have happened...it isn't Apple's fault if you cannot keep more than $250 or 121 GBP in your bank account.

If that is all the money you have maybe you shouldn't be worrying about a MobileMe subscription in the first place right now

***flame suit on***

Have a great day! :p

I bet Apple would really like to have an actual Time Machine to go back to the beginning of July...

They need to extend everyone's subscription indefinitely. Back to free!

Free Me!! (new slogan, start the protests)

how patetic this apologize is. Also how patetic mac users are that rated this article as positive. Apple is a total mess. And mobile me should be free to any Apple costumer cause the service isn't reliable enough. Freeing me would increase branding, like google does.

My Mobilme ical still dosen´t work with my itouch  and in my other 2 ibooks my ical´s are all messed up .

At least idisk worked ..... somehow ....

Saludos

I am starting to get worry about Apple. I am 100% Mac Groupie, I love all of my products, but lately they've been dropping the ball....ATT and now Mobile Me. All things being equal, now I will definitely do my research before I buy my Mac Products. I used to trust their products, now I will need to do proper research.

That has to be one of the most arrogant selfish pitiful excuses for a reply I've read on this forum.

I'm fortunate, it wouldn't have had any impact on me. My brother isn't as fortunate but loves tech & I know it would have had a huge burden on him & his wife. He can't afford an iPhone but I talked him into checking out MobileMe. So now your saying he'd be to blame because Apple blew it.

Get off your mighty horse & do what the rest of Steve's sheep do & feel sorry he has to take care of this.

I'd pull the I'm a mac & I'm a PC commercial because the iPhone launch & MobileVistaMe is on the Titanic. It's only worse for apple because the blind sheep keep getting back on the ship.

I'm MobileMe & I'm Vista & neither of us work. But don't worry we'll charge you anyway!!!!
