Wow. That's a pretty respectful and cool way of treating your staff. How many staff are getting these? I mean, the pessimist would and could say something like "great PR, but slave labour in factories" or "just clearing out all the channel of old iPads they now won't sell during the pandemic so they can sell the new one", or something. But, most companies in the world wouldn't do this, a lot of companies would (and will) demand you drag yourself to work.
I assume that Apple checked and those comfort foods are liked in China.

Nice gesture.

Too bad so many want to blast and slam Apple for doing this. Maybe they would be happier if they did nothing?

Ha! Brilliant. When the CDC advised we have 2 weeks of food and water available in case of quarantine, the first thing I asked my wife was whether the coffee supplies were adequate. Two weeks without food would be tolerable, but coffee... o_O

Come on. Even if you hate Apple. How is this not good? Yes it is great PR but it wasn’t done for specifically for that reason. And yes I’m sure the pr aspect was discussed. They are a business after all
As far as I can see, Apple hasn't mentioned this at all. No press release or similar, Tim Cook has done a number of interviews relating to the outbreak, and didn't slip in casually, "oh by the way we're sending stuff to our employees". A few of the recipients posted it to social media (the way people will post most anything in their lives to social media these days - "here's what I'm about to eat").

I'm sure they could imagine that someone would mention it, but that doesn't seem the reason they're doing it - more like they genuinely want to lift spirits and make the employees feel less isolated. So, yes, it is good.

I appreciate your attempts to "imagine" but you really haven't a clue.

1) the part I've bolded is a ridiculous statement to make. the Chinese writing on the packages should clue you in to the fact that these are items that are sold in China, thus they must appeal to a decent chunk of people. They're not "essentials", but they'll make people feel better.

2) if the contents don't appeal to you, why did you suggest you'd rather have 11x as much of them...

3) "essentials" are a tougher thing to get right. there are a large number of varieties and hundreds of brands of rice, or soy sauce, or cooking oils. and they don't make them feel good about themselves the same way as "treats".

4) at the end of the day, nobody is actually relying on Apple (or any employer) to provide them with essentials, anywhere in China. They're home bound but they're not locked in a concrete cell with the doors sealed up. Essentials are available: whether thats through being brought to them by the local party workers, delivered to their community gates using online shopping or by the act of going to the shops (within limits set, like one person per family every 2 days, depending on the area. where i live, it's been relaxed way further).

5) imagine you had a child whose school is closed indefinitely and must resort to online learning instead for the foreseeable future. what if you never bothered to get them a device. what do you do, give them your phone all day? tiny screen, cutting yourself off from the world while they study...

you're not being a naysayer. your imagination is way off base... and you're perhaps being worse. what do you imagine would appeal to Chinese people more than treats and an iPad? Bruce Lee movies and a blu ray player? Pot noodles?

I suggest you give up on the sterotypical racial undertones.

I didn’t say I preferred 11 x as much of ”them” I said I wouldn't want any of it, but $330 of something useful

I don’t have to imagine, I work and spend a lot of time in China and presently on hold to travel there again once limitations are lifted by my company. I know what is sold there, however I’ll stick with my point, if it was me, an iPad wouldn’t be the top of my list as “help”

Exactly. Seems like Apple did a nice thing for the people of China who are stuck out of work.

I don’t think I Apple did this as a PR stunt at all. Though I’m sure Apple’s PR dept was ok with it

This is a slap in the face gesture. Apple should be providing compensation packages to their employees there and money towards developing a quick cure for the virus worldwide.

Every single person is being compensated when the store is closed by the company. They do the same thing for the southeastern stores that are closed due to Hurricanes

Apple has sent gift packages that include an iPad, face masks, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and more, to its employees stranded in Wenzhou and Hubei due to the coronavirus, according to details shared on Chinese social network Weibo.

While over half of Apple Stores have reopened on shortened hours in China, many retail, corporate, and manufacturing staff remain at home. Families who have received the care packages are said to be "moved" by Apple's efforts.

A letter enclosed in each parcel says that the iPads are provided for children's online learning or to help pass the time during the "prolonged stay at home."At Apple's annual shareholder meeting on February 26, CEO Tim Cook commented on the prioritization of employee health and safety amidst the challenges of the outbreak. Last month he outlined plans to donate to coronavirus relief efforts in China, and in February, when Apple announced that it would not reach its March revenue goals, Cook said the company was more than doubling its donation.

Apple's stock price has seen major fluctuations in recent days due to coronavirus causing uncertainty in the global markets.

the decision to spend money on this probably was ultimately made at apple HQ in the USA.

the contents of the care package most definitely was made within the local apple china organization.
likely with all or mostly chinese input into what would be sent.

in addition to the vitally needed ear temperature thermometer, yes, a lot of the food was "comfort food".
and well chosen.
all of the food related items are available usually in all mid and above food markets in most chinese cities.

celebrate what was done.
don't be a hater.
with apologies to Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Pandemic is needed.

If they couldn’t choose anything you like within this $30 range... do indulge and say what would be useful for $330. Otherwise, as others said, you’re sticking with your point of just being a hater.

Are you not a parent, I wonder? It would explain why the reasoning for sending out the iPad has gone straight over your head.

WOW!! this just came out today!! IF TRUE Tim Cook should be crapping in his pants right about now!!
The stock market is gonna crash on Monday too! Told you TIM. GET OUT OF CHINA! The black plague which killed 50 million people and the whole Roman Empire back in 526AD came from China by the way of infected FLEAS!! 50 MILLION PEOPLE DIED. WORST PLAGUE EVER!!

I'm not sure why that article should bother you. This guy claims the death rate is less than .5%, not the 3% estimated elsewhere. All he is saying is that there are a very large number of really mild cases that go undetected. Not that a lot more people are going to die.

I think the guy's analysis is flawed. But he's not predicting any more deaths or serious cases than anyone else.

A comment worthy of someone who calls themself "EvilEvil"! Maybe Apple should have sent their employees sharks with lasers on their heads?

Such negative talk about a heartfelt gesture. What have any of you naysayers done for anyone affected even remotely by this outbreak?!

I say “well done Apple.” This shows your employees a REAL act of kindness and generosity - a demonstration that they matter.

What are we gonna do with two cases of butter cookies we need anabiotic’s!

1) No distress call or plea for help went out

2) Package is clearly sent from within China... clue is the Chinese writing on the front of all of the food

3) Only one case of butter cookies was sent

4) Antibiotics aren't in desperate need in China (given the amount made there... it's other countries that will be begging for them eventually if China doesn't get to the point of having an excess in production capacity)

5) Sending antibiotics to people at home without a medical diagnosis (ie, not prescribed) would be beyond stupid and, in many countries including China, illegal.

Sorry to overanalyse what was possibly intended as a joke, but as Dick Clark said "Humor is always based on a modicum of the truth."

They have 123,000 worldwide employees.
Exactly - ridiculous low amount of employees compared to revenue. We are ~500.000 in my company but we only do 20% of apples revenue.

EDIT: sorry our number was in billions apples was in millions. so i guess it fits after all
