I‘m unsure about this. They are under an unprecedented forced quarantine, unable to work, and Tim sends them some biscuits and tea and tells them he feels for the inconvenience. On the surface, that’s nice, but a fairly patronizing gesture. Why not send them some cash bonus they, or their relatives/friends who aren’t cashing a paycheck, can use to actual survive?

Nice way to ignore the iPad he sent, too.
Anyway, we don’t know whether they are getting paid or not. Why focus on the unknown and ignore what was a nice gesture?

It's a lot of ways of staying hydrated, along with a bunch of calories that may be more enjoyable that whatever else you're getting.

Tea is a diuretic that can lead to dehydration and toilet paper should be included with Hershey's and cookies that cause diarrhea. Better yet, if Apple truly care they should offer a more practical care package like advance paycheck.

We’ve all worked for those so-called “employee-centric” companies who claim to have their staff’s needs at heart, although in reality they’re no better than blood-sucking tycoons of the 1900s. There’s no way they’d even bother to ask about my well-being in such a circumstance, much less send a care package.

While no company is perfect, Apple is showing some respect and real concern for the hardworking people who make it so successful. Well done!

WOW!! this just came out today!! IF TRUE Tim Cook should be crapping in his pants right about now!!
The stock market is gonna crash on Monday too! Told you TIM. GET OUT OF CHINA! The black plague which killed 50 million people and the whole Roman Empire back in 526AD came from China by the way of infected FLEAS!! 50 MILLION PEOPLE DIED. WORST PLAGUE EVER!!

I find it hard to believe the author of that POS has a PhD. I think the only thing true about this might be that he is a PHD.

It's a load of fearmongering baloney based on an arbitrary "assumption" that 20% of deaths could have been avoided by access to better healthcare. The story for the rest of China outside of Wuhan is in line with the death rates they're discussing.

Hubei province, especially Wuhan, was overwhelmed early on. The evidence suggests about 90% of deaths could have been avoided if that person had been fortunate to live in basically any other area of the country once infected.

Pretending that the number of deaths shows that huge numbers of people were infected is a great story, but the reality is just as it will be everywhere else - there's a breaking point, beyond which things get very much worse. Hubei experienced it quite early on. You need to hope wherever you are, it doesn't get that bad, because you've pretty much no hope of your country being able to take the same actions as China to reduce the spread.

Could you would a little less ungrateful, entitled, or selfish? Good God. Apple could have done nothing. They didn’t HAVE to do or give ANYTHING. Quite frankly, people with attitudes like yours don’t deserve anything. I doubt anyone who received this care package is complaining. As I said before...they’re probably just happy to get something they didn’t expect to. They could teach you ingrates a thing or two.

And...how do you know these people aren’t getting an advance paycheck? Oh right...you don’t know that. So get over it. I doubt my employer would do something like this for us in this situation. And ironically...I work in healthcare.

It sounds like you feel obligated to defend Apple reputation.
What a “insightful” comment.

I point out that people will try and twist what is at best a nice story, and at worst a completely innocuous news item, into “Apple sucks,” and you somehow you see “I am obligated to defend Apple?”

That’s some fancy reading between the lines.

What makes your comment extra inane is that I’m all over this place pissing on Apple’s butterfly keyboard, Catalina bugs, iOS mail problems, and even the Mac Cube.

But somehow, just because I can’t see some imaginary evil in Apple reaching out to its employees in a time of need, you peg me as some sort of brain dead fanboy.

Seems like that says more about your point of view than mine.

Seems a lot of people are commenting without reading.

Dear Colleagues in Hubei and Wenzhou,

We hope this note finds you heathy and well. Since the last communication with you, we understand that you are all staying strong in this challenging time. We understand the difficulties you are facing and would like to provide our best support to you and your families. Hubei and the city of Wuhan have been hit hardest by the coronavirus outbreak, which has now claimed 2,835 lives in China.

We are sending our best wishes to you, on behalf of the entire Apple Team, together with another CareKit for you and your families. In the kit, you will find comfort items and an iPad which can be used to facilitate children's online learning or help pass the time during the prolonged stay at home.

In addition, a series of counselling and consultation services have been prepared especially for you to help you through this time.
Pretty clear that:
  • This isn't their first time hearing from Apple, contrary to some comments.
  • They have previously received a "CareKit" from Apple, the contents of which we are unaware.
  • They have counselling/consultation services available for them.
Clearly Apple is doing more than just sending over a few cookies/chocolates. Yet many here want to constrain Apple's efforts to a few "goodies" to somehow diminish what they are doing or to criticize them for not doing more.

Sounds like you're upset you were "pre-empted" preventing you from posting your usual negativity.
So, you too recognize that Cmaier tried to "pre-empt" any criticism of Apple. This is very common in this forum (and unusual for most other forums).

I wish my employer would send me an iPad if I were homebound.

Imagine being literally home bound e.g. under curfew (for weeks), would you rather have $30 of food and $300 of iPad or $330 of food and medical supplies. I’m not being a naysayer but either this package is only being sent to “western” employees under lockdown in China since if I was Chinese, the contents wouldn’t appeal to me (Charity or not)

I appreciate your attempts to "imagine" but you really haven't a clue.

1) the part I've bolded is a ridiculous statement to make. the Chinese writing on the packages should clue you in to the fact that these are items that are sold in China, thus they must appeal to a decent chunk of people. They're not "essentials", but they'll make people feel better.

2) if the contents don't appeal to you, why did you suggest you'd rather have 11x as much of them...

3) "essentials" are a tougher thing to get right. there are a large number of varieties and hundreds of brands of rice, or soy sauce, or cooking oils. and they don't make them feel good about themselves the same way as "treats".

4) at the end of the day, nobody is actually relying on Apple (or any employer) to provide them with essentials, anywhere in China. They're home bound but they're not locked in a concrete cell with the doors sealed up. Essentials are available: whether thats through being brought to them by the local party workers, delivered to their community gates using online shopping or by the act of going to the shops (within limits set, like one person per family every 2 days, depending on the area. where i live, it's been relaxed way further).

5) imagine you had a child whose school is closed indefinitely and must resort to online learning instead for the foreseeable future. what if you never bothered to get them a device. what do you do, give them your phone all day? tiny screen, cutting yourself off from the world while they study...

you're not being a naysayer. your imagination is way off base... and you're perhaps being worse. what do you imagine would appeal to Chinese people more than treats and an iPad? Bruce Lee movies and a blu ray player? Pot noodles?

Bull.

He's making a valid observation that a lot of posters here (like you) do nothing but complain about everything Apple. What's unusual is to see people who apparently hate Apple spend all their time on an Apple forum letting everyone know.

There are a lot of products/companies I don't like. You know what I DON'T do? Waste all my time visiting communities for those products telling everyone there how lousy they are. For example, I spend zero time on Android forums. Simply because that's not normal behavior.

A few feathers got ruffled because people like this hate when their behavior is pointed out to them.

As COVID-19 is starting to spread and impact the US let's have hope that those in decision making roles, healthcare institutions, other employers, etc. are more competent.

If citizens are on extended pandemic lockdown send them essentials like clean water, food/MRE's, emergency radio since Apple removed it from iPhones, light source, medical supplies, cold weather gear, emergency funds, etc.

It's not Xmas so don't send sugar laced snacks (better to be constipated from MRE's and use less toilet paper than diarrhea), tea and iPad when utilities for hot water and internet service are questionable.

Funnily enough, the Chinese government is capable of taking care of supplying essentials. And has done. Citizens don't have to rely on the generosity of an employer. There have been zero reported issues with utilities - in fact, factory shutdowns mean there's probably an abundance of capacity in utilities like power and no risk of brownouts.

Unless this was a warning directed at the US, who have shown themselves incapable of doing it in recent memore, since its accuracy as a commentary on the Chinese response is pretty suspect.

This is intended to be a care package (nice thoughtful things to let you know that we are thinking about you), not an aid package (you are starving to death and need food).

If your friend was homebound, a care package would be something like magazines, jigsaw puzzle, some comfort food, Kleenex, tea, maybe some weed, etc...

since Apple makes iPad it’s clearly a nice gesture to an iPad.

Not trying to turn this into a "bad thing" at all. But, what's with the recent fascination with the face masks? They don't help protect you from getting a virus by wearing them around. They're only meant to keep you from spreading an infection you've already got. And if you think you might have coronavirus already, you shouldn't be going in to work or out on public anyplace, face mask on your face or not!

Think it’s more psychological than anything

Are you the ministry of misinformation?

Utility companies are run by humans so they, too, will be impacted but my point is utilities aren't free. You have to consider all citizens and not just the Paris Hiltons so if they're on extended lockdown without work, their funds run out and so do their utilities.

I would take the former.

I am going to assume that basic food and medical needs are being handled by the government. In this context, it makes sense to send supplies that complement (rather than replicate) basic food supplies (eg: snacks, face masks which may be in short supply, and an iPad so one has basic access to the internet).

There's also the possibility that sending money or basic supplies might make the local government look bad by insinuating that they are unable to look after their own people. The items have probably been specifically selected to avoid inviting too much controversy or speculation. In the very least, no one can blame the government for not giving each citizen an iPad.

An iPad (while we are on this topic) would also be a nice morale booster to one currently being quarantined at home as well. In the very least, it makes more sense (a compact yet high-value item) than shipping toilet paper (as suggested by someone earlier), which is light yet bulky, and which would be in abundant supply locally.

I imagine it's the same idea as you not getting someone textbooks for their birthday party (which may be essential, but boring and doesn't spark joy or imagination). Or serving in the army, getting sick of combat rations and appreciating sweets and chocolate.

At the end of the day, Apple doesn't have to do any of this, so take it or leave it.

finally you open the danisa tin box...
... and it’s full of sewing supplies :)
