I haven't been this excited for an Apple event in a while. My iPad 2 is not very happy running iOS 7. My biggest problem will be deciding between an iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2. I feel that there might be two tiers of Mini: one retina, one not retina. I think Apple might price them like this: $399 for retina with an A7 and 1GB of ram, $299 for a non-retina with an A6 and 1GB of ram. Although I hope the higher-end Mini will get 2GB of ram—I do recognize they have to save on costs somewhere. Though I'd be willing to pay $499 for a Mini that closely matches specs with an iPad 5. If they underpower the Mini 2, then I may opt for the iPad 5 for purposes of longevity.
Following the rumors and past upgrade cycles, it seems rather likely that the iPad 5 will get 2GB of ram. If the iPad Mini 2 only has 1GB of ram, then I will get the iPad 5. I'd like to be able to use it for a few years without having the OS slow to a crawl when I try to do basic things like type or switch applications. To me, I think having more ram is better than having the fastest processor in a mobile device. The A6 in my iPhone 5 is plenty fast for now, and probably will be for at least a couple more years. Give me more ram so that it can keep up with the next few iOS upgrades. Not that I wouldn't mind an A7—just saying if they want to keep the price down then that would be great.
Another reason I think the Mini will be split into two product lines: the Touch ID sensor. I think it's likely that Apple will want this sensor in both models of iPads. But you need an A7 chip with the secure enclave to house the encrypted fingerprint data. Such a machine will be more expensive to produce, hence a $399 price. But what about the low-end of the market? Do like they did with the iPhone 5C (without TouchID) and have an iPad C or something like that. I doubt it will be plastic as we haven't seen any good leaks for that (that I'm aware of), but the old casing would work ok with a non-retina screen and older processor/ram combo. Charge $299 and blow up the low end with a solid tablet for a good price.
Anyway, if there is only 1GB of ram in the iPad 5 then I might have to keep waiting. I'm thinking ahead about iOS 9. My iPad 2 came with 4.3 (a few months before 5.0 came out) and barely runs 7. Hope we get word about this next week before preorders.
