Could everyone cancel their iTunes 5 download so that mine comes through faster that 5 KB/s please.

Every piece of hardware from Apple that came in colors (well, the iMac G3 and the iPod mini) was a huge succes. Still they went back to all black and white. I really liked the colored minis (esp. the green one).

Btw. I like the name "Nanotubes" :)

Well, I have to say, I LOVE the nano. I went from a shuffle to a mini recently, and the only thing I missed about the shuffle was the excellent size and low weight. I loved having the mini with a screen and click wheel. Having the color screen will be a nice bonus as well, but wouldn't have been a deal breaker, for me.

Now I can have the best of both. Anyone wanna buy a 4GB 1G mini? ;-)

Although, as pointed out, I think that replacing the mini was a mistake. Dropping back to 4gb as the max for non fullsized iPod and losing a few hours of battery life could be a bad move in a lot of peoples eyes. For me 12 hours of usable life (they are saving 14 and they've been underestimating battery life on iPods lately... maybe 16-18 is realistic?) is plenty, and 4gb, while I COULD USE more, gets the job done without having to sacrifice anything. For example, right now I have about 5 audio books on my 4gb mini, plus maybe 800 songs... don't really need more than that without taking my entire library with me.

Very nice!

My father had been contemplating getting a mini and I told him to wait. I think he'll like this one better.

That black one looks damned nice!

I wanted a green mini too... I wish they could have kept the mini form factor and just slim it down... the iPod form factor get scratched too easily and the nano tubes are transparent [right? it's made of silicon like those old iPod skins]-> the black will shows through... it is pretty nonetheless though :D such slimness...

I'm confused. Are the new full size iPods 20GB or 30GB?

I'm keeping my eye on that as well, but I think we can be pretty sure that if they don't bump to 30 today, it'll happen soon...

I was thinking about that - I thought people might be apprehensive about putting him in front of an audience after his katrina comments...

But back on topic, I like it...though not enough to run right out and get one. I'm still wating for an 80 or 100 GB ipod. but apparently 2-4 GB is the sweet spot...

!!!Nano may have been called the Drifter

Noticed in the store description of the nano tubes, they at one point were being called drifter tubes.

I guess at some point they were going with the iPod Drifter.

Thank god they went with nano.

See screenshot.

Weird, the US store has it correct, only UK store calls them drifter tubes.

I know it is early, but I'm wondering if we can sync our data with the ROKR E1. It has not been updated on the devices page and there is no mention of it anywhere...

I would consider one as long as I could sync my contacts.

silicon......theres a saying "if its not broken dont fix it" do you know what that means?

Who defines if it’s broke? Apple? A design can always get better. I don’t care how simple and refined it is. The iPod’s design was cool and fresh 3 years ago. How about they do something new and exciting. Even the car industry once every few years revamps a design from the ground up. This is what happens when there really is no competition. The only thing pushing Apple on at this point is the attempt to get people to upgrade. I believe that Apple simply doesn't want to dick with a selling design even if they could somehow make it better. How could they make it better? No clue but that is Apple's job not mine.

Its interesting to watch everyone pat Apple on the back for the Nano. What have they really done? Moved to a flash based design, shrunk the size. That isn’t innovative that is, pardon the pun, reinventing the wheel.

So did they increase the resolution of the display (compared to the mini)? The new one has got 176 x 132 pixels, but I can't find the mini's resolution right now.

Nano iPod

SOOO Sweet! i am really excited about these. i really think i might have to take a long lunch and go down to the apple store to check them out..

I like the nano a lot. If I didnt have an iPod, I'd seriously consider a black one. As for the ROKR, I think that 100 songs is a good amount... there's probably 512MB built-in flash on the phone, with a good bit of it being used for the phone systems, etc. It would, however, be nice to see an expansion slot so that all the complainers would have more space.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple would one day actually revamp their design? 30 years from now.....
I for one like the current iPod's color scheme a lot--I only wished you could get it in black without the red wheel! The Nano couldn't look better, to my tastes. Pure technolust.

Changing the look of something JUST to change it isn't always good. And Apple's design, being minimalist, has longevity. Not to mention that as a business decision, messing with the recognized look would be a bad idea.

Besides, people can customize the look with cases all they want.

But everyone has different tastes, so of course some people don't like the look, and that's fine.

Anyway...

FYI, here's a rundown of iPod screen specs:

iPod 2" color (220x176 in 1.56x1.25"):
141 DPI
.039 megapixels

iPod Nano 1.5" (176x132 in 1.2x.9"):
147 DPI
.023 megapixels

iPod 2" monochrome (160x128 in 1.56x1.25"):
102 DPI
.02 megapixels

iPod Mini 1.67" (138x110 in 1.31x1.04"):
106 DPI
.015 megapixels

iPod Shuffle 0" (0x0 in 0.0x0.0")
0 DPI
0 megapixels

(Note that the Nano has a higher res screen than the mono iPods, but less than the current full-size color models. The Nano is considerably higher res than the Mini was--not to mention the high-contrast OS X-style anti-aliased UI!)

talk about a let down. it's cool, yes, but not really innovative or new as stated above by siliconaddict. it's still music, and it's still in your pocket. what did the invitation even mean? we still have 1000 songs in the pocket... what a sad day.
