Right now, Apple has fired the director of AppleTV plus; this tells something about the programming.
Based on 4 or so originals they have, See is a movie about handicapped in future or past, Sci-fi story about 70s; some kind of junior drama, one with two aging female stars, and one with the girl actress (forgot her name). Taking into account that Apple threw huge amount of money into this, the whole programming is a catastrophe.
They lack good mysteries, crime stories, detective stories, political conspiracy dramas, action dramas, cop stories, teenager dramas, horror stories - thats' all what is NOT in AppleTV. After two years, maybe it will be there. As a movie producer, I think they made huge mistakes from the beginning. If you don't have something as good as to make people actually pay money, then you end up something they won't watch even for free - cause time is also valuable. And the first impression is certainly most important.

That's a false news and you are looking it wrong ;)

"Even though he’s leaving his position at Apple TV+, Rozenfeld isn’t going far. He plans to return to his producing role through his company Half Full Productions, and he has already signed a first-look deal with Apple."

Apple fired him and offering him a deal already? Strange world we are living, so did he do goob job or not :)

Also first impression been great like you can see from imdb and rotten tomatoes, audience really like the shows. All shows have high audience ratings and after new votes been coming the ratings haven't gone down. Which shows most who like the shows are rating them high.

Edit: also now it looks like that even critics like the servant https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/servant/s01

Servant - will be released this Friday - is Thriller/Mystery, and I think this one is in Crime genre, not Drama.

I guess I'm using Drama too loosely as I consider Thriller/Mystery and Crime genre still as types of Dramas too. Looking for more Comedy/Laughs or at least some with more comedic undertones.

You need to understand that there's different needs for everyone and all these services will find their users, i don't understand why people keep saying the streaming service market is overcrowded. There's always room for a good quality original shows. Also the best part with these services are the fact that you can buy them for one month and then try different if you don't like the one you bought or tried free. I have tried many and i can't find them worth of more than free month try. Currently i have ATV+ and so far enjoying see, dickinson and morning show lot more than i expected. Lot of people are saying for all mankind is great show so need to try that too. I'm very Interested servant and this new truth be told. I think the speed for new content is pleasant. I'm movieholic so i wouldn't need catalogue of old movie which i've already have seen many times.

Good luck enjoying the couple of few shows that Apple is releasing...
No one is interested in paying 4.99 for the limited content they have to offer even if if supposedely would be so good..., which i doubt.
It is not about what "you need" only. It is what other users might have a their disposal to watch.
And spending billions to enter and overcrowded market with a few shows it just does not make business sense.

Look, yes, they fired him and they sweetened the deal with a drama, no one ever knows about. This guy is responsible for the mess which is AppleTV plus.

Sorry, but your arguments do not make sense whatsoever. Why a company that have no experience whatsoever in producing streaming content and has zero catalog will invest billions of dollars in creating content and enter an overcrowded space (Netflix, Disney, etc)???
It simply DOES NOT make business sense whatsoever. No PC users will switch to Apple products, to see its very limited content. And very few people will pay even 4.99 to see a few limited shows. And according to you, the value it supposedly adds, it is not worth the return on the money that Apple invested.

[automerge]1574752065[/automerge]

Apple has no experience in streaming, has very few shows, and no content/catalog of shows/movies to provide to the users. It is entering an overcrowded space late in the game to compete against other companies like Netflix, Disney, etc that already have a big catalog.
Apple should have aquired Netflix, Hulu or similar...

Apple trying to enter the streaming would be like Disney trying to create an iPhone line.
So you must have sat in on apple business meetings to know it makes no sense? Or is it safer to say you just don't understand what you're talking about and just making assumptions? They know what they're doing even if you don't. They know the market situation. Why not wish them well?
And FYI, I just had a friend switch to apple(several other family members as well). He likes everything they've been doing lately. If a lifetime android fan will switch perhaps many more will. Time will tell.

They know they have limited content. They made the right move only charging $4.99 and giving it for free to their customers. Should they have simply sat on it for years and kept making shows to release all at once? That would be much more costly. Better to release it now with more shows every month and charge a low price or give it for free. I look at it as a beta. The library will build up over time. Some can enjoy it now and others later when they feel there's enough content. This allows them to build over time and scale. It's a smart move.
They're focusing on quality. I could see these shows on HBO. And I've been around before there was a HBO. Or cable for that matter.

They know they're going to lose money for years on this. You can't start this and not. It wouldn't surprise if in 3 years they still haven't turned a profit. They plan for this and have an acceptable limit on what they're willing to lose. Amazon lost money for years. Netflix is hemorrhaging money. I doubt prime video makes money for amazon as it's just included in the prime subscription for 2 day shipping that people would rather have.

I don't get why you're so angry about it? Watch it or don't watch, enjoy it or don't. Why are you so fired up about it? This isn't taking away from apple resources. It's a new team. The money is pennies to apple.

Good luck being a hipster. Everyone loves these shows except for the professional contrarians who must hate on things so they can be edgy.

How do you know Apple will figure this out? What track record do they have in producing content?

By next Summer, paying customers will have choices between the big boys Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock. I see Apple dead last in that list of services.

You sound like Ballmer when the first iPhone was announced.

Spot on... And how about Apple getting into the music business in the early 2000s? Especially when the industry was dying. And did anybody ever ask for having "a thousand songs in your pocket?"

The nerve of Apple getting into something they knew nothing about.
The chutzpah! Just like printers. Or networking. Or... cars? ;)

Perfect “Claim Chowder” in John Gruber parlance.

why would i need huge amount of crap if i can get few quality shows?

Also i have life, i haven’t even watched everything Apple offers.

”No one is interested in paying 4.99 for the limited content they have to offer even if if supposedely would be so good..., which i doubt.”

this line also tells lot about your attitude. Why the shows can’t be good, those are made by professional movie and TV show makers?

Also i think you are going to eat your words ;)

Hmm... Random internet stranger says it's a bad move... Trillion dollar company disagrees... Random internet stranger... Trillion dollar company... Random stranger...

It's a tough call, but I think I'll back the trillion dollar company on this one. Don't get me wrong, you present a very strong argument with the all caps. But there's something about them being successful with most everything they touch that gives them the edge here.

This is the first Apple show that I actually have been looking forward to seeing

ALthough they are a successfull company, not everything they do is great.
They have done great things like iPhone and Watch.
Though, Mac Pro Trashcan and MBP 2016+ being some examples that no matter how much money they have does not mean they are doing great things...

Sure they have failures, what company doesn't? Though they have far more successes than failures. And this coming from a guy who's actually used a newton ;)
And they've shown they can learn from those failures you listed. If this were any other company i'd be worried. Have a little faith and enjoy the ride.

Very true. Still, you only get to be a trillion dollar company if MOST of what you do is successful. If they were a company with a long history of failures, they probably wouldn't even have the money to jump into the game to begin with. I'm not saying they WILL be successful. I'm just willing to wait and see.

Producing content isn't too dissimilar from software. Apple is well known in the industry for iterating and taking mediocre content and refining it to something great. Since they control funding and season renewals for their own content, they control this aspect and can take their time to make shows better and better.

As always, Apple will probably have the lowest marketshare (viewership limited to Apple hardware and handful of exclusive deals) and make the most profits (by selling supporting hardware). And as always why does that matter to anyone so long as their customers and viewers are happy?

Only problem is that all Apple's content is uninspiring, bland and doesn't make you want to watch.
Same goes for Apple Arcade. Overall it's a really poor start for both services.
But Apple has time to evolve. Not looking good though in my opinion.
As far as their original shows, tastes will vary wildly depending on the actors, themes and styles of each show. But so far The Morning Show is smarter and better than any similar show of its kind. I've heard criticism that it's trying to be an Aaron Sorkin show but not as good but I see it exactly the opposite way. Aaron Sorkin dialogue usually borders on obnoxious with every character saying the smartest, most witty things to each other like a debate on amphetamines. It's almost like the both characters speaking were from the same writer's mind...but I digress.

My wife and I look forward to that show more than the other dozen or so shows we also watch on Prime, Netflix and HBO. For All Mankind is also good but it was a slow build for me. My wife doesn't even care about it although I know she would love it if she got past the NASA stuff because the show is really about the power of inspirational people and institutions that we seem to have lost these days.

You are the only person on the entire Internet that has panned Apple Arcade so we'll chalk that up to ignorance or irrational Apple hate.

I'm trying to understand why for a streaming service to be successful customers have to ditch all the other ones. For me Disney+, Apple TV+, Netflix & Amazon is a nice priced «combo». I don't have to quit Netflix in order to watch Apple TV+. I really enjoy the shows so far and I plan to continue after the free period (50€ or 50 dollars +taxes per year its... 4,17€ per month). One coffee.
I agree with most of this here but it seems like for as much as people bitched about cable and how "cord cutting" was becoming more popular, having 10+ streaming services is kind of like just paying for cable with DVR except now you're stuck because you cant watch certain shows unless you have that service
netflix, hulu, apple tv, espn+, disney+, multiple HBO's, youtube tv, ps vue, etc

I guess I'm using Drama too loosely as I consider Thriller/Mystery and Crime genre still as types of Dramas too. Looking for more Comedy/Laughs or at least some with more comedic undertones.

Yeah I thought The Morning Show would be THAT comedy all networks need. Turns out it’s just the opposite. 🙁

Just please Apple, give me a really good period drama or something without all the nauseating "wokeness" that pollutes so many otherwise potentially good stories these days.

I cut my cable subscription about 6 months ago so I’m happy to subscribe to as many streaming services as I want providing they are all showing the content I want to watch. Better than paying £80 a month for sky and not want to watch 95% of it.

>>>>>>I'm not sure where customers got the idea that Apple thinks outside of the box. From day one, they have been a product company with great marketing. They never reinvented the wheel, they merely improved it so that our lives also improved. Stop complicating things by piling your dreams and visions of the future onto Apple

Say what? Apple doesn’t think out of the box??? Let’s see Apple ][, Mac and it’s graphical user interface and mouse, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch. If those aren’t outside the box thinking, then I don’t know what is.

Admittedly, Apple TV+ shows have thusfar been a bit hit and miss for me. But Apple has a really high bar to overcome in my case, since I watch zero, nada, nil, nichts TV and haven’t in the last 50 years. They were wise to give me a free year. I might end up actually watching Servant and Truth Be Told. If they are good enough, I might fork over the 5 bucks a month to continue beyond the free first year, particularly if they offer it in a bundle with services I currently use like News+.

And if they fail at this one, big deal. They’ve had other failures (anyone remember Pippin? or even Newton—which was WAY ahead of its time?). If you don’t fail occasionally, you’re not taking enough chances and are playing it too safe to be truly creative. This would be the real worry for AAPL, playing it safe at the cost of trying something risky just because it might fail.
