I totally get what WWDC is about but they introduced the consumer music service, so critiques of the keynote are warranted. Like others, I think the music section was a total mess and the wrong venue.

Reznor should have done Iovine's part. He knows how to do the theatrics as his video showed.

From all the forums, I see total confusion over what the service does. They spent way too long on radio and didn't nail down what actually matters... Downloading songs to your device.

I also see A LOT of people saying that you can play every song in the iTunes Store because they weren't very clear on this. The site clear states every song in the "Apple Music library". So I wouldn't expect any Beatles, or Tool, or recent Radiohead, etc.

Reznor is an extremely valuable piece of the new Apple Music effort, but I don't know that he would be any better in a keynote environment.

He'd HAVE to be better than Iovine. He plays shows in front of thousands. He's accepted an Oscar. He was in full-on Jony Ive hyperbole mode in the taped piece. He is a huge Apple fan... I've seen him in the audience at past keynotes. He knows how it's done and how to put on a show at the very least.

Underwhelming, I was expecting quite a bit more stuff for a dev conference.

Cool HomeKit demos to really push this new framework would have been great, there has to be more to it then dimmable lights via one's iPhone (cute tech demo, but a total gizmo).

El Capitan brings some much needed improvements, Metal on OSX is great news, but the skit concerning the extreme refinements to the Notes application were exaggerated (as another site commented, if MS had done something similar to talk about a new version of Notepad on Windows, they would have been laughed out of the room).

WatchOS 2 doesn't seem to bring much more to the table, is the V2 moniker only for PR purposes?

Apple TV has a home automation/media hub (connected to your iDevices, iTunes, iCloud and Apple Music) would be great, but again there's a huge missed opportunity there.

The Apple Music announcement didn't belong at WWDC, that was just plain weird.

Completely different situations.

This keynote definitely shows that apple is not pushing it anymore. It's just maintenance, optimization and upgrades.
The apple watch was cool but I personally don't know anyone who has one.

Also the entire keynote seemed very awkward with the tons of karaoke jokes and even every minor feature was either "super cool" or "amazing".

I have been an Apple fan for a long time and remain to be but this really really disappointed me.

Isn't that what most people wanted? Stability and performance upgrades?

Seriously, I will never get the public. They complain about lack of features, Apple gives them features. Then they say it's not stable or their iPhone "barely works". Apple improves performance. Then they ask where the features are!

Unbelievable.

They don't. WWDC Keynotes are to inform and entertain developers. The live feed is for developers who can't inform the steep price tag.
If that were the case, it'd be very easy — and I assume cost Apple a lot less — to offer the live stream just to folks who have a developer account with Apple. Apple knows and caters to developers, the press, and the public in these keynotes.

I think they said it was everything in iTunes during WWDC ("stream from the millions of songs on iTunes, and on demand"). Wouldn't make any sense if it was like Spotify. Apple Music needs a bigger catalog to compete well. It's bad enough not having Beatles, AC/DC and Taylor Swift on there.

Optimizing, stabilizing and bug-solving are a given, they're not new features and they don't make for great announcements at a dev conference meant to showcase the next big things on which they'll be working.

I totally disagree. Not every year can be like iOS 7 and iOS 8, thankfully (we have enough mess to deal with).

They did showcase big things, but those are mostly for developers (Swift 2, Xcode 7, better unit testing including UI testing, new game Kits, etc...). Did you watch Platforms State of the Union?

Well developers can certainly take advantage of Music. They can code their apps to allow music to play while being active in the app. Video games for example would take great advantage of this. PS4 allows you to play your Spotify music while playing any game.

I must've missed this line in the event, but it is totally wrong and misleading. The catalog will not be the full iTunes Store. Other than Taylor Swift whose issue with Spotify was their free tier, the catalog will most likely mirror Spotify. Which will be a HUGE bummer, as some albums on Spotify are missing the exact one song you want to hear most.

Watching Iovine bumble and fumble up there felt like I was watching a bad outtake from My Cousin Vinny...
Seriously... This guy is so un-Apple it's not even funny. It was a wrenching experience.

The two ladies they had demo and speak were stiff and awkward as well, overacting too a fault. No need for them to speak again... please god don't ever let them back on stage again...

Apple Music's unveiling and explanation was sub-par at best. I still don't get why I should stop using Spotify along with the songs I have purchased/ripped in iTunes. I don't want an Apple branded...errr sorry... BEATS branded radio station... I don't really care what the artists have to say about their music or connect to us...

I thought the keynote was fine. I particularly liked seeing some new faces, it added a new side to Apple. I'm not happy with the Apple Music introduction though, Irvine should not have been given the task to present it. Cue mostly repeated what he said, but much clearer, focussed and professional.

Pretty much every keynote speaker at Apple started out like that. The all-beloved Federighi had a dry mouth, shaky hands and didn't pull any jokes in the beginning. They will get better, I thought they did pretty well for their first time.

That is a bummer if true, but here's the thing: AM integrates iTunes Match (they are independent services, but complementary. Match is cheaper if you just want that). I can easily just buy/download the entire Beatles discography, put on my Mac (iTunes) and it will be matched and saved to iCloud to listen anywhere, anytime. Same with AC/DC. No syncing needed!

I can do this too with Spotify but it's just so much extra work, especially to get my local tracks playing on mobile. You gotta create a playlist, add all the local tracks to that, and then select 'save for offline listening'.

But what if I don't want to mix Beatles and AC/DC with Taylor Swift in the same playlist?
And what if I have 3000 local tracks and don't want to save them all for offline listening?

With AM, you'll be able to stream your local tracks from the cloud. That is a killer feature and I quote:

How does Apple Music know what songs are in my personal library?

With an Apple Music membership, your entire library lives in iCloud. We compare every track in your collection to the Apple Music library to see if we have a copy. If we do, you can automatically listen to it straight from the cloud. If you have music that’s not in our catalog, we upload those songs from iTunes on your Mac or PC. It’s all in iCloud, so it won’t take up any space on your devices.

While I certainly don't disagree with much of what you stated I will say with conviction that EVERY and ALL Microsoft keynotes are super boring. They've never had one that I hadn't actually dozed off on. It's weird too because I'm usually pumped to see any new tech or software and every single time my eyes have actually closed for at least 10 minutes during their shows. And they do talk often about minuscule things that make no sense to make time for.

Yes, yesterday Apple's show was kind of a hot mess in terms of organization but there's no way they were anywhere close to Microsoft's continuing fiasco of keynotes that never seem to leave a lasting positive impression.

Ben Thompson has a good piece on this. https://stratechery.com/2015/apple-music-and-apples-focus/

But I think Jason Snell had the best take on his Upgrade podcast? He called this portion of the keynote flabby, unfocused and self-indulgent. He said Apple didn't sell the service (which might actually be quite good) and Eddy Cue basically spent 20 minutes demoing the music app not the streaming service.

It was muddled and unfocused. Didn't really talk about iTunes, iTunes Radio, iTunes Match and how they all work together with Apple Music. And honestly iTunes Match should be part of the Apple Music service. Let anyone use it like how it is now, but if you're paying for an Apple Music subscription you shoundn't also have to pay for iTunes Match. But they basically pretended that none of these things exist.

It's pretty sad when social media is talking more about Eddy Cue's shirt and dance moves (and not in a good way) than Apple Music. And please Apple retire the whole karaoke shtick. It was mildly funny the first time, not anymore. And stop making Eddy Cue look like the crazy drunk uncle you're embarrassed by but can't get rid of.

Anybody would be better than Jimmy Iovine. Good good he should never have been on stage. Many people on Twitter did compare Reznor to Jony Ive. Maybe Apple needs to feature him instead. Check Twitter after an Apple keynote that features an Ive video people are drooling over his videos and say he could be offering up dog poop and they'd want to buy it. Honestly Apple should just have him narrate any videos they do. He knows how to do voice over. Oh and make sure Eddy Cue doesn't look like a clown on stage.

While you're definitely entitled to your opinion I think your criticism of the presenters and guests on stage is quite harsh. They are only human beings and no doubt that's a very high-pressure show to deliver. Could you do better?

Oh I agree... Our personal libraries and the PAID downloads are the killer feature of Apple Music. If one song on an album is grayed out, at least I could just pay the extra 99cents to complete it. IF that song isn't an album only track on iTunes. I just checked one of the grayed out songs on Spotify and sure enough it is album only on iTunes. Wow. That sucks.

I'm either renting music or buying full albums, but not both.

And yet, Apple INSIST on forcing people to use a Mac or Quicktime to watch these events. How are they ever going to convince non-Apple users to BECOME Apple users, if they don't use STANDARDS (HTML5, MP4) to show their videos? Wake up, Apple - we aren't ALL using Macs and Quick(slow)time.
You could just copy the stream link and stream it on VLC or something.

Wouldn't Apple be interested in catering to potential developers?

Seeing as I am correct, I can go at this all day. Apple could care less how entertained you are. They want you to be informed if you want to listen. If you're bored, go outside live your life.

Everyone seems to be complaining about today's keynote, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm especially impressed with the new features and improvements coming to OS X and iOS 9. I just wish I could keep the iOS 8 Music app and adopt the rest... no streaming service for me!

You were surprised Apple is adding a LOT of features their competition already has? Not sure what keynote you saw, but it was almost shocking how much Apple has not kept up with their competition. El Capitan looks to be something more to bring OS X up to snuff rather then any real innovation, including performance improvements and UX fixing. iOS 9 is adding a lot of the enterprise level features that Samsung has already offered for years on Galaxy Note. I mean Apple even renamed Passbook to Wallet, Google used the Wallet name for years. Even open sourcing Swift is just another me too response to Microsoft opening up Visual Studio for more cross platform development including native iOS app development.

Don't get me wrong, it's great Apple is finally getting a lot of these features, and things like moving GUI and more API rendering to Metal will be great, but if you are impressed by what Apple announced yesterday you need to explore other people's products. Even if your a diehard fanboy, if you don't explore what else is possible then you end up being being surprised by the mundane, which is what this Keynote felt like.
