Errr, Crossy Road is most definitely not minimalist design. More like the polar opposite.
It's most definitely not the polar opposite either. A 16 color palette and blocky, elemental pixel design? How isn't that minimal?

Isn't the polar opposite of minimalism photorealism? Which of these is more minimal?

And I really do think this sums up Apple's position in the gaming world. Not even a Mac can get GTA 5 without having to run Windows because Apple doesn't take real gaming seriously.

Even with all of Apple's focuses on Metal and graphics shows like that Zen Garden demo, nobody's making real games because getting a controller is a pain and Apple's commitment to never making a controller doesn't help.

More difficult how? Its essentially the same thing with a grid of icons, it couldn't be more easy. In fact I showed it to my 70 year old mum and she thought it was still the old Apple TV box!

There are many things that make it more difficult vs the ATV3.

Using an IR remote, the same one they use with their TV and Cable box, was simple with the ATV3, but now there is no consistency between the video apps for the buttons. Example: to pause and play on ATV3, you press the select button for HBO, Netflix, Hulu, You Tube, and all the other video apps. With the ATV4, pressing select can do many different things depending on the app that is used.

For browsing genres on Netflix on the ATV3, there was a menu that said "Genre". I still can't figure out how to do it on ATV4.

Doing a search on ATV3 vs ATV4.

These are just a few things, let me know if you want more.

My parents are around the same age as your mum, and I think it is nice that your mum likes the new ATV4. Although, I do not think the new UI has a lot in common with the ATV3.

But, I know my parents, and if they were forced to use the siri remote, which, right now they would, then they wouldn't use the device.

They should have just used the intro video from the Keynote. That got me hyped with the Beck "Dreams" soundtrack and the HBO stuff, games, voice commands, and apps. Not so hot on these new commercials. I definitely don't think Apple needs to show the actual box. The selling point is the UI and the potential of their millions of app developers. The games will get better when mobile developers and Apple figure out more workable business models. What is the ideal "size" of a tv app? Not file size but its mandate, breadth, feeling. I would guess that the range is more than on mobile – from being a screensaver app all the way up to a console game. Each of those sizes and types of apps needs a way for developers to make money and enough of them to figure out new experiences for consumers.

Every two-bit device has Netflix. How does this make Apple TV stand out?

Pretty sure a device needs to be at least 32-bit to show Netflix. Heck you really need 8-bits to show even color in any meaningful way.

I think the OP was coining a phrase, "Any 2-Bit...." meaning any basic machine can run Netflix, he wasn't being literal.

This is funny. Reading this reminded me of that Archer episode where Archer keeps using idioms to the pirates which thought he was being literal.

On another site somebdy posted;

But Apple TV is an iTunes front end and has weak games with 200mb limit before it has to download more. That download happen every time you play a game! Crazy bandwidth use

Is this true?

Apple ads are so boring now. Apple used to draw attention with their ads to the point of a little controversy. '1984', 'Think Different' and even the 'Mac Vs PC' ads. They all had a bit of 'edge' to them in one way or another. They had a 'message'. What's the message these recent ads?

Crossy Road looks terrible. This is the state of Apple Gaming.

The neighbour's kids really liked it when their parents came round for dinner. I don't own games a console, previously they both had to share my iPad for entertainment.

Funny how you completely ignored Asphalt and choose the kids game as a yardstick for Apple TV gaming...

Oh there were already countless frogged clones within a few years of its release. Same for all the early arcade games. And even today it's pretty common for developers to copy gameplay mechanics from popular titles. (Eg. Every recent beat 'em up has clearly taken cues from the Batman Arkham series)

Maybe PONG is next and will be called PING , oh wait ..............that failed already
