Apple TV is such a missed opportunity and requiring the remote for games is just dumb.

Actually, the requirement is that a game is playable with the remote. That doesn't mean that you can't have additional functionality that is accessed when you have a game pad. And so far, Apple seems to be fairly lenient in terms of what playable means. Several games I've downloaded are theoretically playable with the remote, but it's just shy of sticking pins in your eyes in terms of enjoyment.

I thought the ads were cool... but Apple needs to highlight more action packed gaming. They should run ads like they did with the original app store for the iPhone and show the breath of apps available.

Bought one on release day, and its going back. Virtually no advance on ATV3 despite years of work from apple. STILL 1080p. The games are mindless drivel. The remote is more difficult to use than the old one. The voice control only works for some things forcing you to remember what it can and can't do.

It they want to charge lots for it, give it a A9X and a proper game controller. Port some big name games and MAKE IT 4K!!

Very frustrating.

I wouldn't call it a "missed opportunity", but I would say that thus far the opportunity has been unfulfilled. I do agree that requiring remote support is a terrible idea.

Every two-bit device has Netflix. How does this make Apple TV stand out?
Netflix is an important part of any streaming device. It's quite fine for apple to let customers know that netfilx is on the apple tv. I'm not sure why you don't get this.

Its probably quite hard to sell an Apple TV as there are not that many apps on it YET and apps are the big thing of the Apple TV
I've got a few apps that are great and every entertaining. I certainly don't need an xbox.

Some of the dullest ads I've seen from Apple in a long while.
They are quite fine.

In theory, yes. In practice, I don't know of any 2-bit machines (as the OPs post said) that can run Netflix.
Very silly discussion. What's the point?

I can't even begin to understand this statement. And the apple tv4 is just fine.

There's no killer app or game for the Apple TV. Every few days I find myself browsing through all the apps just to find something, anything to justify why I spent $200 for this thing. Instead I have to wade through crap apps like calculators, aquariums and even a f*cking menstrual cycle calendar.

This should have been in the hands of developers at WWDC.

I also want to share a 16 sec ad with apple, showing how easy it is to crach the remote. and no, i didnt drop it. or step on it. i have absolutely no idea how it cracked and it clearly is some sort of pressure. indicates that it can be quite fragile unfortunately. :(
my first bad experience with an apple product. stupidly designed by ive.

This reminds me of the feeling I got when they demoed the Gilt app at the Apple TV announcement. Apps like that and the ones you mention just seem so pointless for this type of device, especially when, in all likelihood, you have an iPhone, iPad, or laptop in the room with you.

I really like the old-school TV color bars at the beginning and the end.

Oh, and the Crossy Road ad was hilarious. :p

They added 5 commercials, HBO Now, Netflix, Crossy Road, Asphalt 8 and Disney Infinity. I don't know why macrumors decided to post the netflix add. In my opinion, Asphalt 8, Crossy Road and Disney Infinity are really good commercials.

Apple is compromising their integrity by promoting Disney Infinity for AppleTV. It's such a terrible port that Apple should in fact bury it, yet no doubt because of a business relationship with Disney, they're promoting it instead.

It took 10 minutes of load screens with 5, yes FIVE different loading bars on the screen at once (who designed this crap UI?), registering for an account with a horrible mixed UI and then waiting another 10 minutes of more load screens to discover that playing this game with the Siri remote is a terrible experience.

I'm not one to complain much but this game port is so laughably bad, I can't believe that Apple would want to be associated with it. Right now, there are thousands of people who have seen this ad and are trying the app at Apple's suggestion. If this is what Apple recommends, how bad are the other games and apps on AppleTV?

Meanwhile, there are games that translate beautifully to AppleTV in their control mechanism using only the Siri remote that should be highlighted. Alto's Adventure is the best example yet.

I used to get AdWeek back in the day when Apple was dominating ad awards and reviews. The use of such a short 1/4 minute ad format is interesting as the rates allow "carpet bombing" many hours and channels for a much reduced cost per impression. They seek to dominate mindshare here.

Superbowl, here we come.

Rocketman

On a side-note many networks have switched to digital ad insertions, which often results in truncating the last second or so of the ad! Never happened in the analog world! Make your ad dwell on the last 2-3 sec of closing detail.

Netflix functionality is a "must have" feature for each TV in the home. It sells hardware. That is Apple's job. Not at all confusing.

A Roku is cheaper, but ATV offers more additional features, especially for anyone already in the AppleSphere-tm.

When the iPhone first came out and developers were adding the first apps, remember the most popular app? It was the Fart App. Sad but true. Give the developers a few weeks and give Apple some slack. Apple doesn't wait until you give your approval before they ship. Great companies ship, they don't sit on a product until the competition takes the wind out of their sails.

Required? Most of the games I've seen can use a third party controller. What else are you supposed to use for games?
Most games can use 3rd party controllers but can't be required to use them. All games are required to be playable using the remote only. I think that's what the poster is referencing. The one obvious exception to this rule being Guitar Hero Live. Activision actually requires the BT Guitar Controller to play the game on the ATV.

One could argue (and have a very valid point) that the Roku is cheaper and offers substantially more functionality in terms of content than the latest Apple TV does at present. The only things Apple TV can do that Roku cannot is AirPlay and a handful of games. I'm sure that will change over time; but right now, it's impossible for me -- a 3rd gen ATV owner -- to justify buying the 4th gen ATV.

Also, what device/"smart TV" doesn't have Netflix built in? At this point, Netflix is basically understood to be included because without Netflix, the product would almost certainly be DOA.

I disagree, Apple made the right decision, Apple TV will sell like hot cakes because it's for everyone..not just for gamers. Throwing an x-box controller in the box..it's not innovating at all, hopefully in the future the Siri remote will get more features like Force Touch, Touch ID and maybe others so you can get better experience when playing Arkham City.
