Explain again how i can plug in a USB flash drive full of different files and use them on the iPad? Adobe files, ZIP files, a Quickbooks backup file, and oh...I have this ISO file I'd like to convert to a bootable USB Flash drive. I can do all that on an iPad?

"What's a computer?"

iPad can NOT replace a computer for the following reason.
1- You cannot back it up without a computer.
2- Bad filing system.

The only reason the iPad exists is because APPLE wants the user to buy an additional item.
Look at the Surface. Sadly, Microsoft hardware looks better than the Mac.
If Apple designs an entry level Macbook that can be flipped and used like an iPad, but with a regular OS, then we might consider the iPad can replace a computer. But the reason that Apple is not doing that is because it will kill the iPad.

The same concept applies to the iMac. The Surface Studio design is way ahead of the iMac. You can flip it down, you can write and it is touch screen. When they asked Phil Schiller if they were planning to do something similar, they said that it is not necessary to make the iMac screen a touchscreen. Phil Schiller should be fired....
It is pretty sad that the iMac design has not been updated in the last 10 years (only internals).

Even the new iMac Pro that suppose to come out soon, still has the same old design.

Unfortunately, innovation at Apple died with Steve Jobs.

There’s and app for that. Haha

For iPad to be a full fledged computer it should have a full Finder app and the ability to install non App Store apps.

But the main point of this ad is that this next generation will no longer want or need a desktop computer. They have embraced that storing their data on the cloud is normal and safe.
If Apple somehow makes the developer software to run either locally or better yet through the cloud then the need for a desktop will be over in minds of young developers.
Then they can begin phasing out the desktops all together and rolling out laptops that are x86 free.
Then real Pro's would require a touchscreen Mac - unless they're supposed to code/telnet/ssh/media edit in taco shops or grass gardens

They showcase very realistic usecases LOL
Climbing on a tree, photographing a mantis, laying in the grass, typing a long thesis on the limited Word which is not even capable to create proper table of contents.

Very laughable

I like the message but... "What's a computer?" is a pretty fatuous thing to say.

My first computer was a TRS-80, which didn't even do word processing in the modern sense. Since then, I've used many brands of word processors on many computers. Never once have I needed to generate a table of contents. So that, my friend, is an absolutely ridiculous metric by which to judge what's a real computer or a real word processor.

A computer can be passed off these days as many things. Whatever works for you. I tried to get used to an iPad Pro fully and i just can't not even 7-inch ipad.. even though I can go without a Mac fully

To each their own...got a 10.5” iPad Pro in June, have used it to write clinical papers for journals (with reference management and all), study on it daily, get all my communications done, the occasional spreadsheet work, and presentation creation via Keynote and powerpoint, all with no struggle and tremendously liberating versus using my laptop. Meanwhile, my 2013 macbook air hasn’t been booted up in 2 months.

Like i said, to each their own. what you might consider “getting work done” properly on a device suitable to those tasks is very different from someone’s else’s productivity. Using iOS 11 on the Pro feels far less weighed down than the old paradigm of computing for me.
What app do you use for reference management?

I like this ad. It shows that laptops aren't the only answer and may not even be the best answer for everyone.

If your needs can't be met with an iPad, then don't get one. But don't presume to speak for me or the many other people out there who are getting meaningful work done on an iPad.

"Apple is doomed because they aren't catering to a small niche of nerds that hardly makes any revenue"

How many times have we heard this refrain already?

yes ipad sales might be up now due to cheaper models but the overall picture is not rosy...i bought an ipad and for me it was the biggest mistake ever...i should ve invested in macbook air rather..for any uni student ipad's productivity sucks!

And I just bought an iPad Pro, 12.9. For me, laptops suck.

Yeah that's really a good idea!
What's better than giving an expensive fragile device, like the last generation iPad pro 10.5, to a 5-7 years old kid who
at the first fall on the ground, he will broke it in a flash!
Not talking about that's exaclty how they want us, since the childwood, that is to be mindless consumer of anything that doesn't require any skill using it.
I have an iPad pro, I love it, but I don't believe is a very didactic tool. I've never seen yet a kid doing something else but playing games with an iPad.

Let's there is a customer who has a dead computer (let's say, motherboard is dead) and wants you to retrieve about 30 gigs of photos from the hard drive, and put it on a flash drive. I'm curious how that can be done with an iPad.

I'm in the camp that actually uses the iPad as a computer and have for around 5 years (now an iPad Pro 12.9" 2nd Gen), and I'm a computer tech! People who think it can't be used as a computer are likely in a niche market like developers or other careers like that, or, quite often, they just don't know or have the right apps to do what they want to do.

I have my iPad Pro attached to to my power wheelchair, so I use it wherever I go and it doubles as a communication device for when people can't understand me. People always refer to it as my computer or laptop and are surprised when I tell them it's an iPad because of how much I do on it.
[doublepost=1510898118][/doublepost]The iPad is a companion device that's good for common tasks. Any serious work you need a real computer IMO. That being said, I respect the iPad for how it's evolved over time and the horsepower they're getting out of those A series/ bionic chips.

Again, the example of photos is a regressive model the next generation of computer users has already shifted away from towards a cloud centric future. I have 75GB of photos on iCloud synced across my devices. I have a local backup as well, sure, but the convenience of the cloud and reliability has been solid.

I also question, for those who doubt iPad’s work capabilities, if you’ve given iOS 11 a go. It’s remarkable.

Sadly my iPad Pro 12.9 is my most useless apple device . Amazing built device , good for movies . The 10.5 is so much more practical

Guessing it's early attack on imminent release of Windows 10 x86-64 on Snapdragon devices which would mean nail in the coffin for iPads and some Intel mobile. Rumored to have out of this world multi-day battery life on first 10nm x86-64 compatible processor beating Intel and AMD, integrated gigabit LTE connectivity, run real desktop software suite instead of blown up phone apps, VP9 video acceleration for 4K YouTube which iPad Pros lack, priced at or below iPad and it'll restore an iPad which an iPad can't do for another iPad.

People generate gigs of photos/ videos with their devices monthly. There's no way to store them all in the cloud.

What a great ending. Apple really changed the idea what "computer" is.

Basicly only thing which i do with my desktop computer nowdays is making music, everything else i do with my iPad Pro 10,5" it's by far my favourite "computer"
I agree. After working on iPad Pro and using all features with Adobe and Office suites, MacBook Pro is staying in significant other's domain. I am looking forward to more compatibility with USB-C devices and new market place apps

Also remind us of ever heavier cpu load from almost any app that comes out on windows. Remind us how window hogs the performance and constant need to restart windows
