If someone wants to get rid of an employee for one reason that is illegal, they just make up another excuse or they put them in a near useless position with no chance of being promoted in hopes they quit. I've seen this occur multiple times and had it happen to me a few years ago when I wouldn't participate in my boss's Limbaughesque political rants. Most of the times it's not even worth going to court over as you would be better off spending that time looking for a better job and are unlikely to win anyways unless you have strong evidence.

Interesting that no SVPs were there - just Cook and Lisa Jackson. Also found Schiller and Cook's 4th of July tweets interesting. Notice how Cook swaps out the word "life" and replaces it with "equality".

Actually, the discrimination, as long as they claim it has a religious basis, is exempt. You can't force a religious group to hire gay people if they believe them to be "terrible sinners" or some such. Have you not really read how this stuff plays out on reality?

i really wasn't looking to get into a debate over this ... the OP stated that he would be fired from his job if he said he was gay. I just wanted to educate him and tell him that he cannot be fired from his job for being gay, that is illegal in the US.

does it happen? I'm sure. Is it right? of course not. Will his employer use a different excuse to fire him? I'm sure.

I was looking out for his well being and didn't want that to happen to him.

I disagree with any public parade designed to support an agenda and I believe that these parades are very intolerant towards views different then their own. This would also apply to a white pride parade, a catholic (or any other religion) parade, a straight pride parade, etc.

If you ever come across a straight parade let me know as I'd proudly march in it. Can't let gays have all the fun. :D

Yet, you are taking a fairly narrow definition, a legal one (and one that doesn't actually cover the whole LGBTQ community for a variety of reasons). But the reality is that so long as people are willing to cover for someone else illegally firing someone, this stuff is basically allowed. Maybe not by the law, but the society. As I said, you can't really legislate away bigotry, even if we'd like to be able to do so.

So basically since you understand all of this, you're arguing for the sake of arguing and proving you can 'semantics' better than the user you are responding to. An employer choosing a cover story to fire you because they found out you are gay, is firing you for being gay. Where did you learn math? 1 + 1 = 2.

Is Pride Parade really still a thing in 2014?
Even though you probably already support most of the goals of the GLBT movement, the parades will go on indefinitely. Mainly because they are fun for the participants and fun for the spectators.

Non Christians often participate in Christmas, non-Hindus often join their Hindu friends and colleagues for Diwali, and non-Irish drink green beer on St. Patrick's Day. Again, they do this because it is fun. Few non-Muslims fast for Ramadan, because that's not all that fun, but they might join their friends for the feast after sunset.

Honestly surprised there are people that object to these kind of things

really?? there is someone online waiting to object to anything now a days. there are probably people that object to it being sunny. :(

i was arguing the point to help the OP. He would have some law suit on his hands if his employer said to him "we are firing you because you are gay".

I'm surprised no one has asked why there isn't a straight pride. Given the IQ of the users here, I thought that response was a given.

YOU ARE WRONG.

Employment law is on a jurisdiction by jurisdiction basis.

In Texas, for example, there is absolutely no protection for LGBT persons *at all*.

ENDA, a bill that *would* provide protection, has been pending in Congress since 1994 but has *not* been passed.

As a gay Texan, I'm *very* aware of the relevant laws, unfortunately.

Guys do you really need to argue everything. They did a nice thing just enjoy the video for what it is.

Jesus doesn't need Apple to advocate for him because he has enough "sheep" "parading" around drawing attention to themselves as it is.

I like what you did with the 'sheep' thing. But not sure where you are going with this as I'm sure most of the readers here are fans of Apple and Jesus. (Not all of course, to each his own.)

Depends on which part of the LGBTQ umbrella, and what state. Some folks are better protected than others.

But even if there are laws on the books, it won't stop it from happening. And having hate crime laws on the books doesn't stop the hate crimes from happening. You can't really legislate away bigotry.

Exactly. I understand the motive (that people shouldn't be prevented from taking jobs based on something determined by birth), but I'm afraid of how they're going to try to enforce this. You know how firing a black employee for any reason draws suspicion?

I'm not homophobic. I just don't need the gay agenda shoved in my face 24/7. :)

What agenda? The right to be treated equally like yourself? You do realize the world revolves around a straight agenda? Everyday, every where, media, TV, advertisements, billboards, what we teach kids in school. Such a shame people are fighting for their rights and it's all up in your GEORGE FOREMAN. Until a gay couple can hold hands walking down the street, minding their own business, without 1000 stares, taunts, and homophobic comments from straight people, you're going to have to deal with the "gay agenda". Sorry people fighting for their rights is offending your straight sensibilities.

Yeah, I never cared for it either. Never payed any special attention to gay people. I wouldn't want anyone discriminated against for irrelevant reasons, but they take this way too far. And the rainbow symbol? Great, way to prevent anyone from ever using a rainbow for design instead of protesting purposes.

The greatest example is how all the big tech companies are now trying to score political points like this. It's like the "green" trend in 2008. No Apple news should require a PRSI warning at the bottom of it.

you live in canada, i doubt you would really know.

here is the US governments federal website proving me correct.

http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/sex.cfm

... Discrimination against an individual because that person is transgender is discrimination because of sex in violation of Title VII. This is also known as gender identity discrimination. In addition, lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals may bring sex discrimination claims.

You can quote all the gibberish you want from a .gov website. But back here in reality, this sort of thing happens all the time in the USA. Just because the laws defined black people as "separate but equal" decades ago, doesn't mean that's how things played out in reality.

You can make snide remarks about him being Canadian, but it's actually sad that a Canadian is more aware of the reality of these issues than an American who thinks he knows the law.

Study law, and one thing you'll learn is that laws are complicated. It's not as simple as quoting a line of text from a govt site. It's much more complicated in reality, and rarely ever so cut and dry as you pretend it to be.

Thank you.

Mainly I'm against it because I'm against parades of all kinds. They cause traffic problems. Sometimes you can't get where you are planning to go. Parades should have to go the speed limit and obey other traffic laws.

Just hold them at a local stadium. People could watch from the bleachers while they parade around the field.
