Apple does about the same amount of stuff with your data that Google does [...] Siri won't every won't ever work as well as Google Assistant because it can't access your personal data
That seems contradictory to me. Unless you mean that Apple treats the (comparatively limited amount of) personal data they let themselves have access to in the same way that Google does? But even that I would dispute.

I had iPhone 4s, 5 and 5s. Never wanted the design of the next versions, then Apple doubled down their efforts on killing old devices with every iOS update and that pushed me to an Android device and never buying something from Tim Cook again. Samsung S8 looks better IMO, however Android feels cheap but the Oreo update made the phone faster, something that is impossible to say with Apple devices.

Apple has all those features, but the deal breaker is that I want a device that lasts more than a year or two. Apple wants you to keep buying a new phone every year, and they have a complete program to do it:

1. Kill old devices with free software upgrades.
2. Advertise that your old phone can be "recycled" wih their cool robots and renewable energy buildings so you don't feel guilty of buying a new one.
3. Add new features than only work if you have the latest devices.

If you have no problem on buying a new phone every year and you believe it is normal, then you are a valuable cu$tomer to Apple.

I wish Apple would stop using that juvenile style piano music. It's equal parts pretentious and patronising.
I find these new ads patronizing too, not only the piano. It’s like they’re saying you’re dumb if you buy android. Apple should focus on its real strengths for example.... hmmmm can’t think of any anymore

The best reason to move to, or stay with iOS is the vastly superior privacy and security.

Is it really vastly superior?

Unless I'm missing your point, security on iOS vs Android is largely similar (as in, if it were stolen, the thief wouldn't be able to access the phone without some specialist equipment).

As for privacy, I'd be surprised if there are many iPhones that don't have a single Google app (Gmail, Google Maps, Gboard etc). Not to mention Facebook, the master of stripping your personal details. Or instagram. Or Whatsapp.

I'm not sure how your suggestion of iOS being superior in these areas would persuade me to switch.

You'll typically find me criticizing Apple over many of their items/philosophies but ad #1 is spot on here and part of a debate I typically have with friends with Androids. They gripe about lack of control over apps and settings yet they're more upset when one of these things breaks their phone. Apple may run a tight ship but for the most part you can always find what you need, and it's fully vetted. I like knowing they're protecting my phone from crapware.

All of the apps I need are available on the Google Play Store, and my friend (iPhone X owner) claims that my 2.5 year old Nexus 6P takes better pictures than his phone. Apps and a "better" camera aren't enough anymore.

Apple -- give me a competitive voice assistant and the ability to change my default apps to CROSS-PLATFORM alternatives and then I'll be interested. Because, honestly, I'd like to use a phone as powerful as my Android device WITHOUT having to compromise on privacy. Throw me a bone!

You friend is obviously blind about your Nexus 6P taking better photos. Not even close. The rest I can agree with.

Switching from Android to iOS will be the best and happiest decision you could ever make in your life. If you’re an Android user, watch these ads and then make the switch. iOS is delightful, secure, and has the best app developers creating incredible experiences for all of us.

Except all of my friends and family have to have What's App. With iMessage, the communication app is built in and integrated in the experience.
Only about 5% is having iMessage over here. WhatsApp is de facto standard and making iMessage useless over here despite the stickers or Animoji.

Can you repeat that without blinking?

As a user of both Android and iOS phones I can say that there are mind bending annoyances and smile inducing advantages on both sides. Go with the device and the OS that’s best suited to your particular circumstances. Ignore the ads and check out reviews and peruse the discussion forums for straight talk from actual owners of any devices you’re interested in.

These ads are good in that they’re short, cute, and to the point. But I think we all know they’re ignoring a larger and more nuanced reality. Lol—that’s what ads are supposed to do, after all.

It’s not the reason Europeans are poor and the reason they don’t buy Apple iPhone. The real reason is that the competition has caught up with Apple’s offerings and most of Apple’s service offerings are poor here.

Yes, that's correct. I have family in Central Europe. Even if you can afford the phone, you may choose a much cheaper one. On the other hand, if you live in a small country like Hungary, all services are poor. Even Google translate is a joke, Cortana, Alexa, Siri, OK Google don't work at all, there's no Android Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay. The language is too difficult to program, and the market is too small. Probably the same in Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, etc. On the other hand, card payments are always chipped, therefore significantly more secure than US credit cards, which are just a single number that can be easily stolen. In the US, I just wish I could lock my credit card in a safe, and never reveal its number to anyone, and just use Apple Pay or Google Pay instead.

There are plenty of alternatives, such as WhatsApp, etc. that work much like iMessage without all of the complications that Apple has caused with iMessage when switching phones.
WhatsApp is a third party app. I keep seeing this suggestion, but it really misses the point. Apple iMessage is built into the default messaging service on iPhone, so people use it. There is no direct equivalent on Android. If WhatsApp was the default messaging app on Android, you would have a point, but it’s not. Instead, WhatsApp is one of many alternatives BUT the user at the other end has to have it too. On the iPhone, every user has iMessage.

It's true that 1. there are sketchy apps in the Play Store and 2. the quality of apps is generally better in the Apple App Store, but in my experience it's not really an issue. Most mainstream apps are equally good on both platforms, and sketchy apps stink a mile away.

As for portrait mode and picture quality when you spend as much on an Android phone as an iPhone the difference is not huge, if at all.

IMO the superiority of the iPhone is privacy, hardware longevity, and customer support, but I guess these aren't so glamorous.

Funny I've lost count of the apps Ive bought in the App store that didn't work and Apple refused to refund my money, not to mention the countless times I've bought IAPs and didn't receive the item and fought with Apple for a month and also not gotten a refund.
Name one example of an app that didn’t work. What was the app, what hardware and os did you have, and how long after purchase did you ask for a refund? Please detail the entire interaction with Apple support (what number did you call or what email address did you send your request to, etc)

I have been very tempted to get an android phone myself, but iMessage is the main thing keeping me on the iPhone. Android or the carriers need to find a comparable solution ASAP.

I'm always surprised by people still attached to iMessage. I guess it's an US thing since the rest of the world has almost forgotten SMS exists.

Eh, in Android if you uninstall an app in 2 hours after purchase you get an automatic refund.

Honestly I could survive on either iOS or android, neither is better. Whatever you pick you’ll end up needing to invest in apps and services to get the most out of it anyway. I think android is a better value propersition but doesn’t integrate with anything. iMessage, FaceTime continuity iCloud etc all mesh nice but you need to use all those services to benefit. Android has similar disparate elements but has nothing on windows to help bridge the divide.

I hope android does mature, in its stock form it’s lovely to use. I hope Apple let users customise more, it’s about time iOS got a revamp, long overdue we are for some widgets and icons that don’t have to pile up from top left!

Actually, Apple does about the same amount of stuff with your data that Google does, the difference is Apple denies doing it while Google admits exactly what they do with it in plain, easy to understand English. This ultimately means things like Siri won't every won't ever work as well as Google Assistant because it can't access your personal data, at least not officially.

So, no I don't think Google and Apple are equal, I think Google is ahead because you actually know right where you stand with them.

Thanks for making me spit my coffee out all over my keyboard.

Google makes 90% of their revenue off your data and you’re going to try and claim Apple does “about the same amount of stuff”? Priceless.

Did Google tell Safari users about writing code to take advantage of an exploit so they could continue tracking?
