We already have some titles that are playable (and enjoyable) on multiple platforms. So while I don't think every game can/should be forced into being playable on every device, it's useful where it exists. I mean that's one of the main selling points of the Switch, is it not?

Agreed. My point though is Apple is forcing everything into being playable on every device.

Initially. That strategy works when you want to launch a brand new service across four different device categories and have some kind of consistency. Later on, they may well find certain games are better for certain experiences - for example, a larger screen or controlled exclusively with touch inputs.

I'm not understanding this warm reception to the price. $5 a month is a killer price compared to the prices single games are charging! I play a Word game that wants to charge me $7 a month to remove the ads, and buying virtual money in the app can cost upwards of $20.

Apple's literally giving away high-quality games at a tremendous price! I'm just not a fan of the all-or-nothing approach to subscriptions. Stop paying and none of the games will work? Bleh.

Gee, such constructive feedback.

We've barely seen what's coming. For the game app industry, this is going to turn heads.

how do you not understand the warm reception to the price then?

I am still scratching my head who this is for. Casual gamers want a couple of free "thumb only" games. Competitive gamers want good graphics, gameplay, known IP, twitch streaming, etc. Indie gamers want to follow a game from the start like Valves early access or Kickstarter.

The only people I can see getting this are parents who think an iPad is a substitute for parenting and don't want to spend a fortune on amassing a mobile game library, but large enough to keep little Timmy occupied at the restaurant.

I think it’s a common misinterpretation that Apple is now in gaming. They are not. They are in ”arcading”.

I suspect he meant warm like luke-warm. Not a very positive reception.

He quoted me and I was fine with the price. I’m warm with the price. Especially with a month trial, I’ll give it a whirl. If it’s a bait and switch though, that’ll be a problem with me for price.

edit - auto-corrupt. ;)

Some of these look OK, but there is an extreme bias towards action games here. Really zero in the puzzle, matching, strategy spaces, which is a shame because those types of games are what would get our family to sign up, and are IMO the genres that work best with touch controls. I already have a PS4 and Switch so we’re more than covered for graphically-rich action.

I have two boys that keep playing those crap FTP games with adverts etc. I think the Apple Arcade could be the answer to my issue and will be trying it out.

Only a few games look interesting to me right now, but I know my kids will love a lot of these. I want to support this ad-free and IAP-free endeavor of gaming on the iPhone, iPad, and especially the Mac, so I will be buying in immediately. I'd pay $5/mo just to abolish IAP to the fringe. I feel like this has a lot of potential.
I totally agree with that, I just don’t like the action-heavy games they are showing so far. Maybe in a couple years they’ll have a better variety of genres represented. My wife loves games such as Bejeweled and Frozen Free Fall, while I like games such as Advance Wars, FF Tactics, Hearthstone, and the like. I didn’t see anything in those areas. If Apple gets some of those without the depressing IAP and ads, I’ll be onboard.

Lost me at the "better than a traditional controller" part. Shut up.

Also, it's your damn service and your video, no need to rush through all the titles like that. Take 20 minutes and show them all off.
Haha yeah I was thinking the same thing when the guy said “Oh there’s so much more but I’m running out of time...”. To me that was a not so clever dodge to cover for them not actually having that much more (any more?) content to show at this time.

Yeah, probably sticking with the mass market genre first to ensure growth and like you said they'll add more variety over time. I doubt my wife will play any of these as she is more into puzzles and mysteries.

You just described 80% of parents on the planet. I see big upsides for this.

Not my kids. At restaurants they sit up straight and stare forward. I even force them to drop in on our adult conversations and pretend to be intrigued. If they have a coloring table mat... maybe if I'm in the right mood.

Letting your kids use an iPad at a restaurant doesn't mean you're dropping out as a parent. I have a great time with my friends and family, and I don't expect them to be miserable while we adults enjoy an IPA or two.

...and most other things that have been written about, displayed, leaked for the last 6 months! For instance, these games are designed to work on ALL ios hardware. That's the lowest common denominator hardware. Nothing is going to push the already criminally underpowered graphics cards in the computer ranges if it can already work on an Apple TV. Where is the twitch streaming? The competitive games? The original IP? Where is any actual gaming concessions for the varied gaming communities? No where.

Apple has had over a decade of experience in being able to accumulate mobile games fast. But don't mistake that as having a pulse on on the finger of gamers. I mean this whole thing has come out of the need for a subscription in the first place as everything right now on the store is IAP garbage. They are trying to subscribe their way out of a problem of their own creation, or more correctly years of App approval ineptitude.
Mostly agree. To say they're late to the game would be almost laughable; they've been lapped.

Having said that, their user base is SO huge that this could still (depending on what they're paying for the games and whether a few get any traction) this could still end up being a solid addition to their bottom line and possibly something to build on to one day be able to truly compete in this area.

How many variations of Temple Run can one tolerate?

Much better satisfaction with a one time purchase of Raspberry Pi running Retropie to play all the console/arcade/computer classics.

Or, wait for Stadia AAA PC game streaming.

Someone doesn't understand English. Apple has already done a tone of teasers. This is their own bloody product, they dont need anymore teasers. Show everything. Who will it hurt to have an in-depth video showing off every feature and game coming to the service on day one?

A ton? Please link me to this "a ton of teasers" Apple made for Apple Arcade thanks.
Put up or shut up.

How hilarious to see Apple users become game snobs!!

How hilarious to see serious gamers think everyone aspires to become one!!

How do you know it's not positive? Everywhere I see it gets positive reception for price.

I was guessing why the previous poster was saying everyone liked the price yet surprisingly the reception was warm.

I agree the reception is very positive, so thanks for interjecting into the discussion.

I don’t understand gaming being pushed on a platform where there are no physical controllers.

You're old fashioned, I get it. Nothing wrong with that. But if you open your mind a little, you'll see that games designed for touch can be fantastic and even better controlled than with a physical controller. It's the games that are originally designed for a controller or with a controller mindset that don't do well when translated to touch.

A very early example was Angry Birds. It worked well by direct manipulation. A game like that wouldn't have succeeded in the controller era. Or games that require only a single touch anywhere on screen but allow for very complex moves dependent on timing like Alto's Adventure or Super Mario Run.

It's not even fair to call these "mobile games" anymore. The iPhone is far more powerful than any console out right now. Many games available for iOS are very rich in story and in graphic detail. It isn't 2007 anymore, the iPhone has been out for over a decade and games have come a very long way.

I'll stick with PC/Xbox. Gaming on a 6-7" screen just doesn't do anything for me.
Hmm... I've got a 12.9" iPad and a 15" MacBook Pro and a 70" TV with an Apple TV connect. It's not anybody's fault if you've limited yourself to the smallest screen.

How about people who want to play games on a casual basis but don't want the clutter of a console.

"Gamers" will surely have dedicated PCs or consoles - but for those who aren't that interested this looks like it could be fun
Or the mobile gamers who are so sick of freemium games that they want to barf?

Um, no. The iPhone will probably beat the XBox One or PS4 in terms of CPU. But in terms of GPU (which is what matters in gaming) those consoles are about 6 times more powerful. Also, those consoles (and x64 CPUs) are optimized for high memory bandwidth which is essential to put those GPUs to use. Apple's A1x chips have poor memory bandwidth. So while even an old i3 CPU can drive a powerful modern video card, the iPhone/iPad CPUs just don't have the bandwidth to do it, even if the GPU were available, which it isn't.

Literally created five or more during GDC and then another two this week. I put up, now kindly shut up

But why would you want to use the Apple TV (which is hardly a decent GPU) to play games optimized for an iPhone/iPad on your 70" TV when XBOne and PS4 exist?

You put up nothing but your words which is meaningless. Like I said, Links.
Looks who doesn’t understand English now.
