Avid the King? Dethroned is more like it...

I really don't think AVid is seen as The King like it once was. For a FRACTION of the price, Final Cut Studio 2, plus a Kona card, plus Xsan, and soon to be plus Final Cut Server, will get you a VERY robust, high-end solution for a video workgroup. MANY high-end facilities use Final Cut instead of Avid -- major broadcasters, filmmakers, post-production companies, and a lot of smaller individuals and groups, who can actually afford to do full HD withint he Final Cut platform (unlike Avid.)

Just compare an HD-capable Avid Adrenaline breakout box to the new (not-yet-shipping) AJA Io HD -- the AJA Io HD costs less than a year of support for the Avid Adrenaline! Avid's pricing is no longer viable, and this is why more and more, year after year, Final Cut is taking the title of most-prolific post-production suite out there.

My upgrade was shipped today

I am based in Dublin, ireland and was notified today that my upgrade shipped today. This is well ahead of the promised delivery date of June 4.

Yes, making the xSan software more like the Unity software probably isn't a big deal, but the core of the multi-user problem is on the FCP side of things. FCP is "project based" and Avid is "bin based." You can have 20 people working and saving in the same Avid project at the same time no problem (but only one instance of a specific bin can be open at a time). You can only have one person working and saving in a FCP project at a time. When new media is put on a Unity the assistant editors can update all the editors projects in the background in just a few seconds, but on FCP all the editors would have to stop what they are doing and manually import the new media themselves. FCP just isn't designed for a multi-user environment and w/how inexpensive NLEs and shared storage systems have become multi-user is becoming more common so I hope Apple is address this in a future version (even though I know it will require a major over-haul).

Lethal

Lethal

I think we're headed in that direction. To my knowledge Apple has no plans to make a Multi User Core Data so I'm beggining to wonder if they will eventually use a WebObjects back in for DB stuff. Leopard is bringing an addendum to QTKit which is called QTCapture and Apple is highlighting the ability to record Pro level audio and video simultaneously via QTCapture. Star gazing tells me that QTkit and QTcapture will likely form the bedrock for Apple Pro media apps. I guess the next thing to do is to see what they do with XSAN/XGRID2 and WebObjects.

I'm thinking that it'll likely take 10.6 before Apple has fluency in multiuser features for FCS. We're going to need a robust Metadata system and filesystem that keeps track of changes. Luckily Apple isn't asleep at the wheel ..they've made some nice strides forward in both areas. Long ways to go though and they know it.

Multiuser Pro

One thing I can say is that it looks like relatively soon, Brian Summa/Chesapeake Systems' application Multiuser Pro will return (it was EOL'd a while back when some of the Apple APIs changed.) This allows you to toggle multiple sets of user preferences easily, on the fly, with Final Cut Pro itself. Similar to the Avid Projects folder.

Upgrade again. Oh well!

Well, I have not even installed my FCP crossgrade upgarde and this comes. Oh well, time to save up $499 and while at it save another $2K and get me an MacPro or Macbook Pro and say goodbye to my powerbook. Never ends, does it. (If only my freakin' bike did not need maintaince and break my budget. Sorry just venting. )

Wow. Got an email yesterday that it shipped, and am receiving it today, 2 days faster than I paid for!

Has anyone installed yet?

My three upgrades show a ship date of Jun 8th, delivery by the 11th. Probably just as well. I am way behind on my yard work. This will help maintain the domestic tranquility.

Mine is a couple days away still.. Apple says it shipped the 16th, but TNT just got it to Eindhoven today..

Anyway, I want some first impressions/reviews, anyone found anything anywhere?

I received my copy of Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade today - ordered on the May the 9th. Installed and only just started playing with FCP 6.0 all working well so far. I am based in the UK

One point that may be useful for us that never read the installation instructions :) - During the installation process one of the disks looked like it was stuck at 100% install for ages, to the point that I thought the installation had crashed. I almost aborted the install - when it then finished up with that disk and asked for another - it was only then I noticed a flyer in the box saying this was normal.

Right On, Apple!!

I tell you, I live a charmed life with Apple. I ordered 3 FCS2 upgrades yesterday. I had a ship date for next Month (June 12th I think). Anyway, I just received a Notification of them being shipped today, with a Monday delivery!

just ordered mine...

Just ordered mine from Apple with a delivery date of March 23rd. Hopefully the 8 core that I ordered arrives at the same time.

Man, this is starting to tick me off; I ordered my upgrade back on April 16th on the Apple Store online status still says "Not yet shipped."

I ordered my upgrade on Apr 15th and recieved the shipment notice yesterday for May 21st delivery :)

What do you need to order the upgrade

Hi,

I am just wondering what do you need to order the upgrade ? Is Apple asking for a serial# ? If I would have a previous academic version - could I just order the upgrade and install that over the old install of FCS ?

Cheers
LaForge

BTW - Apples pricing and upgrade strategy for academic versions stinks in comparison to what Adobe is doing!

If you have the academic version you can not upgrade. You have to either a buy the new FCS2 academic or the regular FCS2.
I know it sucks, i'm in the same boat as you. Seems pointless to buy the suite over gain. I wish their was a work around...

I wish their was a work around...

It was, and it was called "The Cross-grade", made your Academic into a Commercial version, but I guess that ship has sailed now. I'm a first-time buyer now, and while I'm a student, I know I will continue to want this suite for quite a while, so I'll get the commercial version instead of the academic one, I hate not having the option to upgrade. :)
