Maybe Apple shouldn't have been in such a rush to release the original iPad. Mine died magically just weeks after the 1st year of AppleCare expired! Now I've got a useless brick.

I guess RIM finally realized people don't want to have to buy a matching phone to get email, a calendar, and address book on their tablets.

PlayBook Software Update to Finally Add Native E-Mail

Playbook was a ridiculously stupid name for a serious device too, whoever is in charge of marketing at RIM should have been given their pink slip for thinking up a name like that, it sounds like something you would buy to teach a 1 year old to read not a high end device, their credibility was destroyed with their name alone.

Microsoft will have actual minimum specs on what a Windows 8 tablet can be. I see the main OEMs being Samsung, Asus & Dell. Essentially I would expect to see Windows 8 on the Galaxy Tab hardware soon.

I think this is exactly right. Potentially, Windows 8 could usher in a new type of PC that some people have been crying out for.....More functionality than just a tablet thanks to the OS, but just a tablet when you need it to be. Wouldn't surprise me if many of the other companies who've dabbled in Android tablets switch to Microsoft as well....I think it's Android that has failed as much as the hardware manufacturers in the tablet space so far.

There's a lot of potential there for gamers as well, based on the hardware Nvidia has in the pipeline. The iPad is good for certain kinds of games that work well with a touch interface, but I'm not a fan of on screen joypad controls, it's too easy to miss buttons and it's distracting to have to look down at the iPad to position your fingers when they stray from the control area....There needs to be an alternative method for first person shooters, sports games and the like. Peripheral development will be much less curated on a Windows tablet environment, which will of course produce some badly designed, tacky stuff, but also hopefully some innovation as well.

The more I think about it, the more excited I am about the potential. I just hope that Microsoft doesn't mess it all up which they could well do if they're not careful.

What do you mean no rush??? Apple needs to ****ing beat windows 8!!

Dude, I don't know if it is sarcasm or being naive, but I'll bet on the latter.

Even those that matter in Microsoft knows that the "even OS number curse" is still alive and well. Many predict that Windows 8 will be a "multi-platform flop" as much as Vista was on trying to use 90% of multi-core processor resources.

In short, Windows 8 is Microsoft first real "post PC" OS release. It does not start up with a desktop but this bizarre, MIT Media Lab like, semi-motion tile interface that was first tried on Window Mobile 7.

Their "Harry Potter UI" where the user moves their television remote like a wand to interact with the screen is an interesting first start. However, it looks like Slytherin, wants to be Gryffindor, needs a user from Ravenclaw do work it right and ends up being Hufflepuff.

This is the largest public beta of a product I have ever seen second only to New Coke.

I recently won a Blackberry Playbook, which was kinda fortunate as I already had a company Blackberry mobile phone. Just as well, as the Playbook does not have an e-mail application. In fact it has so few applications that is only good for browsing the internet and for checking e-mail (as long as my mobile is at hand). Everything else is a disaster - I have to rip DVDs (which I own!) and drag and drop them from my iMac as the Blackberry Desktop software is next to useless. The resulting videos have to be rescaled by pinching, and even then they don't seem to fit the screen properly. The interface itself is reasonable, but business like rather than fun. The tablet itself is good quality, but has a ridiculous on/off button that needs a sharp point to operate and a volume control that seems to have a mind of its own. The tablet retails at exactly the same price as an iPad - what person in his right mind (and without a Blackberry phone!) would dream of buying it in preference to an iPad!

Actually, there very few negative comments in the press about "Playbook", since that word usually refers to sports or business plans.

"iPad", on the other hand, got a lot of derisive press at first, especially from female commentators. Yet it ended up doing just fine.

I guess RIM finally realized people don't want to have to buy a matching phone to get email, a calendar, and address book on their tablets.

That's very true for people wanting to access their corporate intranet accounts, and I totally agree it needed such apps for them.

Using it in just a consumer mode, though, I had no problem accessing GMail and GCalendar on my Playbook for mail, contacts and calendar. It even comes with links built in for those, as any owner knows.

So I think RIM mistakenly thought all their first enterprise customers would already have Blackberrys for their corporate accounts, and could use the web for personal ones.

If Apple comes out with an iPad 3, I would love to have:

1. More RAM - so the web browser can start caching open pages
2. Higher Resolution Screen
3. SD / Memory Card support

It's a pain to transfer files only via WiFi or through a PC USB

I love my iPad, but let's be honest, it has quite a few short comings. Looking for multiple accounts, live app icons, etc, etc. Needless, no time to rest on laurels. Get to it Apple!

...your looking for features that apple chose against by design, not sloth.

news to me -- i read several reviews that chastised RIM for calling a business device "Playbook", a term that could be interpreted as either "good for playing" or "an item found in a recreational sport"....neither of which has jack-all to do w/ business productivity, RIM's specialty. thus, name fail.

Agreed. Time to "throw out their Playbook?" :p

That was one hell of a bet they made. Especially when corporations are jettisoning their Blackberries like it's an Olympic sport.

What about a fan and optical drive? :D
