I would have liked to also see a comparison on external monitor support between standard/pro/max/ultra chips.
I know! How can they leave that out of the article?? For some people, monitor support is more important than CPU power. I would’ve been fine with the M1 Pro but instead opted for the Max to support my 3 monitor workflows.

This article really misses the point of the M3 Pro. Sure it has more cores, but the difference is the increased I/O both in terms of monitors and USB ports.

Crazy how fast we've switched to Apple Silicon as opposed to the switch from PowerPC to Intel. The resale value of Intel Macs are in free fall. Saw a 16-inch MacBook Pro for $900 the other day on eBay. I'm pretty sure it was one of the $3500+ configurations just three years ago ☠️.
There are still some ludicrous prices for Intel Macs in Apples' refurbished section!

the m3 ram figures are clearly nonsense in this article. Its claiming 32gb. The ram being offered as a max on the m3 is 24gb same as for the m2

My Mac Studio with M1 Max (10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 64GB unified memory) is a beast. Abode Illustrator will load a file with easily 2000 vector lines in about 5 seconds... there's ZERO lag on Illustrator, regardless what I do. I have yet to install the newest version of AutoCAD made for Apple Silicon, but I'm assuming the performance is going to be on par with Illustrator, which will be fantastic, as AutoCAD is very graphics intensive (even when only doing 2D).
But don't you think being able to load a file with 2000 vector lines in 4 seconds would make a huge difference to your life???? You realise you're going to confound apple marketing folks if not :->

2019 I9 MBP 16 is still doing great. If you are not a power user, get one and safe your money. Even to buy it now 2nd hand it is a good Joyce after all. Newer MBP's make only sense, if you do use it 4 Games or excessive video editing. Top machine for less money.

Got one here in Germany a month ago. 2.4 I9, 32/512/ GF 5500M 8GB mint condition for 1000 bucks.

To me the most significant improvement is that they increased the clock speed with every process node shrink. It all started with the Apple A4 chip (45nm, 800 MHz).

Sorry, this guide is a fiasco. There is no clear guidance whatsoever, and the last paragraph doesn’t even give me good suggestions for my needs like do I get a cheap M1 Max oder an M2 Pro?

Couldn’t take anything serious after reading „you work with images“ = get the Max.

Seriously guys who wrote this ….

8GB should be enough for most users
Given that RAM can never be upgraded, I think this is questionable for a device purchased in late 2023 or 2024. I really believe only the most casual and lightest users should get 8 gigabytes.

Almost anyone else who wants their device to be performant for a number of years should get a minimum of 16GB of RAM (or maybe 12 if 12 is ever offered as an option).

8 GB RAM is pretty much promoting e-waste, that absurd amount on ram should be illegal.

On the Apple Store right now I can pick up a 16” M3Pro MBP for $4,299 or a refurb M2 Pro equivalent for $3,399.

The M3Pro is a 26% price rise for a 1.5% muliticore performance increase.

Looks like the M3 Pro chip was specifically designed to help sell all the M2Pro chips they have in stock.

Overall, by the third generation of the M series chips, it is pretty disappointing that you can spend that much money on a brand new MacBook Air and still only be able to run one external display. If you spend 1200 to 1500 bucks on a laptop it is not unreasonable to expect support for more than 1 external display. It is also sad if you seriously need to jump all of the way to the Max chip to have a decent gaming experience if you happen to want to game. I don't game, but I do work with music. I assume that the Pro chip would likely cover my needs, but based on everything I have read I do not feel good upgrading my M1 Pro MacBook Pro to an M3 Pro MacBook Pro as although it would be a solid upgrade, it isn't that much different than had I upgraded to the M2 Pro. I guess that I should feel relieved that I see no reason to spend money yet.

I’m not surprised with the M3 Max being a monster in performance, and you pay for it.

Yet the base M3 in the base MacBook Pro 14 and iMac, and later next year in the MacBook Airs, also looks to be a beast in performance in its class. The M3 looks like it will satisfy a lot of people with varying needs. Consider, a few years one opted for a “Pro” device just to dabble in video editing, 3D modelling, music management and such, but now an entry level chip blows those old “Pro” devices away.

If Apple would release an Apple Silicon laptop with a sub $900 price tag it could really eat away at mainstream laptops. Hell, they’ve even got a device: the current M1 MacBook Air. Repackage it as just MacBook and slot it into the right price point. A three year old device and it’s still one if the best performers on the market.

It wouldn't because they would gimp it to upsell people to the more expensive devices, that's what they do all across the product line.

A Macbook Pro which can only support one external display and ships with 8gm ram at $1600 is all the proof you need.

M series chips are great and powerful. Upgrading from Intel to M3 will see a huge performance boost.
