Definitely shady!

Direct response to the industry having a 78% drop in February for loss of smartphone sales.
if you take a class in finance you might learn that the dollar is exploding versus other currencies. Translation: values of other currencies are tanking. this is not greed, as you imply, but simple economics.

Not to get political, but I think this is NOT about INCREASING profits, but rather, MAINTAINING profits - given global inflation/devaluation due to necessary stimulus, etc. :(

Apple's option prices are already pretty ridiculous.

They know that sales are being and will continue to be hit so they decided to extract money from those that are probably a little willing to pay more.

I think that it's one of the many reactions to Covid-19.

I think that BTO computers are more difficult and expensive to build now (lack of resources).

It will be interesting to see if Apple reverts this pricing change after the pandemic is over ?
I have a feeling that this is it. You'd have to imagine that creating custom machines instead of pulling from stock would be pretty tough right now.

If this was the reason then all product prices would have been increased and it would not have been done under the radar.
and not done between Wed and today. The exchange rates changed prior to late last week. A very foolish move at a time when potential buyers are already second guessing as to whether they should commit funds to tech.

No change in prices here in Singapore as far as I can tell, though I know the US dollar is appreciating relative to our own dollar, so it might just be a matter of time before our products become more expensive as well.

Hopefullly they will drop prices again after corona issue
It has nothing to do with Coronavirus per se, it’s that the value of many currencies has dropped vs. the US dollar.

If those currencies recover, Apple will be able to remove the surcharge. If the value of those currencies continue to slide, additional price increases—including increases to the base prices, not just upgrades—will be necessary.

You may be correct but they were aware of that prior to last Wednesday.

Makes sense

This is disturbing. We can only hope they don’t stick with these kind of business practices and this isn’t successful enough to become precedent.
You think this is the first time Apple has done this, LOL. They’re always adjusting local pricing based on currency rates.
