This is the result of exchange rates. I would even suspect that these price changes may be auto triggered. People will complain and then Apple may or may not choose to do something about it.

You’re kidding right?

Or just unaware there’s 20% VAT included in the price?

btw, in the UK they’re currently enjoying a $41 discount over what we pay in the States.

Hmm, and the last few weeks (since mid October) where the £ has been trading a few cents either side of $1.30 but we've still been paying at USD party incl. VAT?

All of you astute business folks should know it does cost more to build and manage the supply chain of custom machines. So really you are just whining
Astute business folks know it’s because the values of many foreign currencies have collapsed recently.

I bet you also argue for higher taxes just because.

What a silly non-sequitur.

Nope, if you want to use macOS legally you have no choice.

Well...then you have a choice to make with respect to how you want your computing requirements met. Don't like Apple's prices? There are dozen's of Windows computers out there.

Being an adult means shouldering tough choices now and then.

When they should be doing the exact opposite.

Why? Everyone around the world should get huge discounts because they pay in collapsing currencies, while those of us in the u.s. continue to pay full freight?

Just because the prices rose doesn’t mean those people are actually paying more. Currencies change in value, so a euro today is not the same as a euro a month ago,.

Sure this is a decision made for many reason, more than we know... but not sure it’ll help sell more products in a time when sales are already tanking

Very likely, it is intended to decrease sales of certain models, while supplies are constrained. And to steer people to the standard configurations. Having done pricing strategy for a big tech firm myself, this is one approach to aligning demand with supply.

Further...Apple is only imposing the 10% on the BTO options. And not on the price of the computer itself.

Omg, I love this article title! =)
Apple “slaps”....
More stories need to start with those 2 words. 😂

Brilliant!

Although maybe the article would be even better if it started with "Bosh!" or "Take That!" and then in to "Apple Slaps..."

I wonder if part of the problem is of Apple's own machinations...because everything is soldered together BTO is more complicated than it might be if some of these changes were easier/modular.

For everyone out there who complains, as a person educated in accounting, I can tell you that this is a standard in accounting. Not a business decision but ah accounting decision based on the value of the dollar versus other currencies.

Everyone thinks it’s Apple sticking it to them all the time, but in Accounting have to be conservative with money and currency exchange rates require this for international organizations to maintain margins. Apple isn’t going to be all that profitable if at all this quarter or next.

How is this shady? When you buy something, they tell you what it will cost.

This is an increase after what they said it would cost. There is no reason provided for the increase from the norm. How did you miss that?

if you take a class in finance you might learn that the dollar is exploding versus other currencies. Translation: values of other currencies are tanking. this is not greed, as you imply, but simple economics.

Yes ... but the timing is what makes it shady ... the economics is fluctuated ONLY based on the Pandemic official announcement from the WTO, not by actual real market influences ... just a pandemic. This has affected Apple's, Tesla's (specifically a $600 loss in 3wks) and many others in the tech industry.

If you'd like to provide real world insight into economics and what your finance class has specifically highlighted when stocks and the dollar is affected by a pandemic (along with the sudden rise of Gold bullion 1 troy ounce, again risen by Pandemic WTO announcement and lack of confidence in President's ability to handle this starting 3wks ago) ... by all means enlighten us.

Why are you speaking sense? This minimizes people's outrage. People want to be mad. You're not helping them be mad. Shame on you both. (/sarcasm).

Even as a Brit, I'm not too surprised about this. GBP to USD has dropped at least 10% since the introduction of the 16". Probably not helped by COVID and USD being a relative safe haven.

After 20% VAT, we're actually paying (slightly) less than the USA for base models at the moment (although it really doesn't feel like it).

Unfortunately your chart above only shows current day. having a chart comparing the currency exchange from the date of WTO announcement to current day shows a lot more insight. the ONLY reason for the currency affected is due to the panic of this Pandemic and lack of faith of government officials ability to handle the situation ... in the next few weeks you'll see this taper off back to prior of the pandemic announcement. Hence why the shock of Apple's price rise of BTO options. The US dollar is getting strong which means the cost of BTO is cheaper for Apple and thus should be cheaper for purchasers in the USA>

Nope, if you want to use macOS legally you have no choice.

Well that's part of your value decision. If you decide MacOS isn't worth the price increase then you can get alternative products from any number of other companies (with your only realistic alternative OS being Windows). If you decide MacOS is worth the price increase, then pay it.

Charging an extra $225 (CAD) to go from 8GB to 16GB of RAM should be a crime.

The actual cost to Apple is, what... $60 (CAD) at most?

That chart shows a month. It's been trending downwards anyway over the past year or so. No guarantee GBP will strengthen immediately after the pandemic either, especially with the aggressive economic policies outlined by our chancellor which probably won't do much to strengthen the pound, in the near-term anyway.

The good thing about being an Apple stockholder is that on rough times you get the company's customers to pay higher margins, because none was really expecting Timmy to lower margins and tell stockholders to buy more Apple products by now I guess.

Again the message, keep buying stocks guys, good timing.
