Plenty of rational explanations for such a move, last year's Q3 earning's miss being the most prevalent. Can we focus on those topics, you know, actual financial discussion surrounding inventory management and supply chain management, rather than "lowest common denominator I don't know crap about the topic but I'll post Samsung sucks and iOS is stale!" ?

No offense, Knight...but...

i'm still using my 3GS - granted, i'm not much of a "phone" guy. It gets the job done.

If i was going to bother to upgrade at this point, i'd either get a used 4S (no contracts for me) or some contractless android phone.

The lack of weight in the 5 is impressive, but it's not $700 impressive for me to get it off-contract.

How else to read it? How about verbatim and at face value.

The combined sales of both Android and iPhones broke quarterly records at ATT.

If ATT wanted to state that iPhone slaes had a record quarter - they could have stated that. They could have written two sentences instead of combining them.

It's very likely what you propose is true. But quite simply - that's not the statement ATT is making. You and others seem to want to interpret MR's headlines or ATT's statement instead of just taking it for what it states quite clearly. They are touting ATTs success - not the platforms.
But then why mention iPhone at all if it was really Android that brought them record sales? I'm not trying to deny Android had record sales; I just think iPhone did too.

Not sure if it was already mentioned in this thread as I havent read it all...

Apple needs to really revamp iOS. It's look & feel is so stagnated, basically the same for 5 years with minor tweaks...

Android devices keep changing their look & feel all the time, and I know people who upgrade their phone 2-3 times a year just to get something new...

Maybe it's finally starting to catch up to Apple?

Poor Apple lol, 2013 is really not going to be a good year for them. I feel sorry for the stock owners, especially the delusional "mortgage everything and buy now!!!" crowd that pops up in these threads.

Sorry, but that's BS. My iPhone 5 looks like it went through a war, plenty of scuffs and damage on the finish (I don't have a case), but you know what ? I've dropped it every chance I had, on hard floors, the gym's wooden bunch, sent it flying while doing some ab workout once.
So because your personal abuse of your phone lead to scuffs and scratches on yours, it is indication (proof?) that the '5 isn't prone to scuffs and scratches? ;)

(Though I personally think the issue is just as exaggerated as the Antennagate on the iPhone 4: somewhat true, but greatly exaggerated)

It is sad to say but the fact is lack of jailbreak will greatly reduce the number of potential Chinese consumers... Apple need to realize this asap...

Wimpy aluminum case and problems out of the box with the anodized finish, plus the idiotic decision to eliminate the 30-pin dock connector! Not to mention the fact that it comes with iOS 6 installed and Apple's crappy Maps app! Gee, I wonder why it's not selling as well as hoped?

The iPhone 4S remains the best iPhone Apple has ever produced. It's the last and fastest iPhone that works with all of my 30-pin stuff.

Absolutely insanely dumb to establish a connection "standard" and then switch horses to make a device thinner than it really needs to be. I've never picked up my iPhone 4S and thought, "Gee, this sucker it too thick!"

Apple's stock is going to get hammered today!

I agree the 4S is a better feeling device and Ivy should realize, thin has reached its limits. If they want to scale up the 5S relative to the 4S without a edge to edge look, I'm not the only person I know who will be glad a few grams were added to the weight. The 4S was the sweet spot in solid feel.

Ivy would have been told this by Steve, if he were still with us. The single hand with a thumb navigation commercial was Apple's defense to people reacting to the drop in durable feel they know when going from the 4S to the 5 in their hand. They should have spent more concern with the battery design and less with ``making it thinner.''

Ivy's obsession with thin needs to end.
Another one of these "Steve would have..." nonsense posts.
We have no idea what Steve would or wouldn't have done. And for all we know Steve was just as obsessed with thin as Ive is. He certainly made a big deal about thinness with his keynotes.

Correction? We're down $200 from its highs. We're heading to $450 most likely. I should've sold back at $600, but I kept thinking a lot of this was white noise. I am not sure I have the balls to hold through earnings.

If I had stock, I would've sold when Cook took over. Now, I don't mean this in retrospect either, as soon as Cook took over, bad CEO or not, I would've dumped my shares.

If it does go back to $700/share, then it'll be because of something truly revolutionary and game changing. Unfortunately that's not a TV or a new bigger iPhone 6.

No, I'm saying anyone who claims scuff appear out of nowhere are lying. The real issues was phones coming out of boxes scuffed. Any damage post-unboxing is due to some intervention by the owner or someone who manipulated his phone.

That is what I'm saying.

I love it how anyone can become a financial expert/analyst/advisor in this forum.

PS: No offense to those who really are!

Software not hardware

I haven't read the entire thread so shoot me if it's already been said.
To me, most of the smartphone hardware is the same. It's the software that's the differentiating factor.

Apple used to be far ahead. Android still doesn't interest me. But Apple's iOS has lagged in innovative features. That had me thinking for the first time in several years about looking at another phone manufacturer. Laugh if you will, but BB10 on the Blackberry looks very nice from preliminary glances at it.

If Apple doesn't put some serious work into iOS soon they are going to be facing some serious problems down the road. The keyboard software on Blackberry is miles ahead of iOS, for instance. And multitasking on an iPhone is not a rewarding experience.

I've thought about buying a 5, but ONLY because I moved and Sprint has no data service here. (Considering picking up a Verizon unit, they have LTE coverage.)

The 'upgrade' killed Maps and YouTube, and there isn't a jailbreak out so the new phone is in many ways a couple steps back.

I predict that if a jailbreak ala Absinthe pops up, so will the iPhone 5 sales...

YouTube and Google MAps are on the app store now...

So let's be honest about where the scuffs come from shall we ? I can pretty much tell you the story of each one on my own unit.

Do you realize how absurd your reply is? You call me a liar for no reason and then say your phone is messed up because you keep dropping yours? What a joke man. There are tons of people on this forum who have accumultated scuffs and the like and haven't dropped their phone once. Myself included. Spare me your BS.

There are many issues with the iPhone 5 that shy a lot of people away from it. The new connector, the larger screen are the two biggest issues. A lot of people I know who upgraded since the iPhone 5 came out went with the 4S because it was the "right" size and worked with all the things they already owned. They didn't want to buy a new cable, then have to wait 6 months to a year to see accessories updated. LTE is not the selling point that Apple (at the behest of Verizon Wireless) thought it would be, as it isn't wide enough spread to be useful to most people. At least when the iPhone 3G came out, at&t had been given lead time to get their network in order (but were overwhelmed by demand, and have barely caught up in 3 years) buy estimating demand based on iPhone EDGE sales.

Whatever the next iPhone is, it is going to have to make up for the shortcomings of the iPhone 5, and actually be evolutionary enough to actually make people go, "Woah, I want one", like Apple did with the EDGE, 3G, and 4.

You realize when Cook took over APPL was at ~370?

Apple has reached a point where they are realizing that people have these unrealistic expectations of what's possible in the tech world....consumers seem to want Apple to invent a flying car, that runs on wind energy, and is the cheapest on the market.

Apple may not be perfect and they will always have improvements to make, but to for people in the MR forum to say that Apple's "poor" product lineup shows how far they fallen behind is just plain silly.

Consumer expectations are starting to take their toll on Apple, they set their own bar a little high. Hopefully they can fix this.

flying car? I'll take two.:D

I'm thinking new design (i.e. higher res screen) means they are cutting the orders to make way for a different screen order...

I love a jailbreak as much as the next guy, but I don't think people that are waiting to buy a 5 for a jailbreak include the majority of Apple's prospective customers. That said, it IS stupid for them to withhold features, because they should be looking to expand customer base, not minimize it.
