By the time Apple finally comes out with the next Mac Mini or iMac, the trade-in value of my 2019 iMac will have dropped so much that I'll be tempted to leave Apple.

Dang I was wondering why I only got $550 for my 13 pro yesterday when it appraised for $600 a few days ago. It sucks and trade-in values ARE way too low, but selling is a headache I refuse to deal with anymore. I'm sure Apple absolutely counts on that but whatever. I'd rather get something than get ripped off or have my time wasted by scammers and choosy beggars. Paypal gives buyers 180 days to open a case so people can just use your phone for up to 6 months, destroy it, then file a claim and get their money back. Paypal always sides with buyers too. One buyer trashed my phone then got his money back 5 months later claiming I sold him a defective device. Paypal didn't even investigate or give me a chance to respond before yanking the money out of my account. Using craigslist is just asking to star in a true crime documentary, and every time I've listed anything on FB marketplace I got nothing but creeps looking for dates, scammers, or lowballs. One guy offered me $150 for a 4 month old 7 plus, another wanted to trade for a set of used truck tires, and every other message offered several hundred extra if I'd ship it to their nephew in Africa. Zero serious offers. Then you get the people who waste your time agreeing to buy only to disappear. One buyer ghosted me as I was waiting at our meeting spot 😑 No thank you, I'd rather take less on a trade-in than deal with buyers.

Apple finally admitting that what they were selling us before is junk. Well, I guess Apple will now cut the prices on the refurbs (just kidding, they'll probably go up).

Why would you think refrub prices would probably be going up? Apple routinely cuts retail prices on refurb products. Various certified refurbished iPhone models, for example, are lower priced today than they were just a couple of months ago.

Everyone in the comments: "Apple has gotten so bad, they only care about the money, screw them"

Also everyone in the comments: "I can get so much more money if I sell it on ebay/swappa/carrier trade-in/private/..."

I would agree, if it wasn’t for all the dodgy people on eBay who say there’s some problem with your perfectly good Apple device, refuse to return it, and you end up out of pocket.
Or the ones who are either noshows and waste your time or you messaged 650x to reach price of $X and in person they instantly try to haggle

Came to post the exact same thing.

Why would trade in values for older stuff not fall?
Not sure if this is sarcasm or not. On top of them doing such a quality job on shipping the new device. It’s just another squeeze play by Apple. Those pockets getting deeper under Tim scrapple.

Apple gives u back sales taxes on trade in

So my iPhone 13 Pro Max 128gb was $720 plus Florida sales taxes 7%. Meant I got $770 back. I applied it to the 1099 iPhone 14 pro max.

eBay selling prices (sold prices) average around $750-850 for the same 128gb iPhone 13 Pro Max. Considering eBay fees and shipping (10%). And ease of trading it in. I’d much better deal with apple directly with trade in.

So best to trade in iPhone when new iPhone comes out. Last year (2021) apple was giving $790 for iPhone 12 Pro Max trade in for iPhone 13 Pro Max

I buy lowest gb these days to maximize my trade in. I don’t need 256gb. Cause apple doesn’t give u more if u have 128/256/512 etc.

One question: Can you trade in directly in store?
I mean, I hand over my current iPhone and buy the new one with the discount directly in store? Or I still have to send it by mail?

Traditionally most OEM's whether it is Apple or another brand like Google usually low ball trade in devices and then sell them to refurbishers for a profit.

You will always get more selling on used market. Of course there is a risk selling used. I have used Swappa for a long time and generally sell very competitive and accurately list the condition with plenty of pictures. I now send pictures when I ship and the box it is shipped.

Samsung is the one OEM that gives higher than resale market or at least very close on used Samsung devices. It is why I often upgrade my devices because the offer is too good. If Apple did the same thing I bet they would sell a lot more but I guess they don't need to.

Tech market is like used cars. Depreciation hits fast and hard.

Prices increase on the iphone because economy

selling after marketing goes down...because of the economy....

Yes, I did exactly this yesterday.

You can trade in multiple devices at once too. Only one can count as the 'official' max value trade in towards the new phone, any other devices you trade in will get slightly less and you'll get Apple gift cards for them which work like store credit. But you can use those gift cards toward the new phone too.

For example, my 13 pro was only $510 if I just wanted to sell it back to Apple, but went up to $550 when they set it as the designated trade-in for my new phone. I got an additional $365 gift card/credit for my 13 mini as opposed to $380 if I used it as the designated trade in, but I was still able to use that $365 gift card to pay for the new phone on top of the $550 trade credit. I'm bad at explaining things but basically you can get max trade in value for one device and slightly lower value on gift cards for any others, but you can trade in as many devices as you want in-store to cover the cost of the new device.

Reading the list by Apple made me feel like they cheapen the valve of my iPhones.

Are they even gonna cheapen on UNOPENED iPhones?

Never ever ever trade anything to apple. Sell it yourself.
Where I live the trade in actually deducts the trade-in value from the product pricing, so it also lowers the sales tax. When I traded in my mbp for the m1 pro mbp the total I netted actually ended up being about $150 more than I would get selling it elsewhere because the tax I saved. It was also extra convenient without needing to ship it anywhere or arrange meet ups.
