No, it *is* important. Because Google and their OEMs don't operate on high margins. Apple hogs most of the industry profits. The only thing sustaining horizontal business models is the ability to push volume at the cost of all other considerations.

You missed my point, LTD. I was speaking in regards to "fans" of either platform. See what and whom I was responding to.

Context is everything. And you have a habit of removing things from context to perpetuate your agenda.

LOL! FUD that Android and Windows are buggy boatloads of malware and security breaches! Seriously?

Umm, i don't know what you're talking about, Windows and Android are the most secure OS's on the planet...oh wait...am I spreading FUD?

I noticed you passed over the post below. It seems to be because it destroys you bashing and Android hate. But never mind little facts getting in the way of spreading FUD and bashing.

The Pentagon has already certified iOS more than a year prior. But don't do research more deeply than walking through a puddle of information.

LOL!

Uhhh... tell me what's new about Android then?

*crickets*

BTW - Grammar is not your strong suit it would seem. Try "you're" (see your quote). LOL again!

Oh the irony talking about grammar when you use "LOL" and "Uhhh..."

Queue gleeful high-fives by Apple fans around the world.

You and all the other haters can stuff it. When ONE company with three phones, one of which is only available on one network, the second only on two, comes along and outsells what, for all intents and purposes is the other half of the smartphone market, that's a big deal.

I have no doubt Android will continue to reign as the King of Malware. I am not hating on Android just stating facts.

Calling it the "King of Malware" negates your latter claim.

No one that I know with an Android phone is anywhere near as worried as you seem to want people to be.

Especially since a) the majority of exploits have to do with downloading apps from third party markets which then send expensive SMS texts if you're on a carrier in a third world country or b) they had some code that might possibly be used to download actual malicious code, but had not.

As much as MacAfee, Symantec and others want everyone to believe we need their anti-virus software, it's just not at that point yet, not by a long shot. They use trumped up statistics to try to scare the naive.

There are also a lot of good guy programmers who watch out for Android malware, which is fairly easy because of the upfront permissions required in all Android apps before installation. A tip calculator from Nigeria that asks for phone access would be a big red flag, for example.

I do think it would be wise if Google ran at least an automated check on new submissions, however. It probably couldn't catch time bombs, any more than Apple's checks can with their apps, but it couldn't hurt.

Actually, the Pentagon has approved WP, Android and iOS for various different projects. It is easier however for the military to deal with Android devices in order to neuter them. IOS is not being neutered because Apple apparently is refusing to make the devices to special specs, which limits when and where it can be used. That said, the Army have used and are using both Android and iOS and the Navy is using iOS, specifically the iPad.

So sorry, to burst your bubble, but the military is not brand specific on anything! They just usually buy the cheapest crap. Trust me, I've seen it over the last 20 years.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

*Cough* All the anti-Apple folks here and Apple's "flummoxed" competition. *Cough*

Linux don't let facts get in your way

"Also, the STIG applies to only one device for now, the Dell Streak, though DoD and its vendors are hoping to see approval for more devices soon. Additionally, DISA and Good are working to implement sufficient security measures to allow a STIG to be approved for Apple's iOS-based devices. iPads and iPhones are currently being tested in various corners of DoD under a DISA-approved Interim Security Configuration Guide which only allows the devices to be used in a pilot phase. "

But wait, there's more

I'll wait for you to find an NSA approved iPhone. If it isn't NSA approved, it doesnt meet the highest security standards.

Who cares? What's funny is before this report, marketshare was the most important metric to the androids, and now when iPhone has the higher marketshare in the 4Q, the excuses are flowing. Is marketshare important or not?

It matters, but it's also subject to intelligent critique. (Well, often not by MacRumours fans - but intelligent analysis by the real world - in particular the analysts.)

The intelligent will note that:

  • Apple was ahead by 0.1% - which is likely less than the statistical noise in the measurements. If you look at a political poll - if the numbers are within the margin of error it's called a "dead heat", not "candidate X is 0.1% ahead of candidate Y - Y is doomed".
  • Apple introduced a highly anticipated new model early in the quarter, so intelligent analysis would consider that Apple got a "bump" from people who were waiting for the new model, and most likely that "bump" won't be seen in following quarters (until the Iphone 4S² or whatever the next model is called comes out)

Yes, Apple had a good quarter for Iphones - but the rabid fanboys claiming that this "is the end of Android" are "Chicken Littles" - completely misunderstanding the data.

Who's claiming that? If i recall correctly "nail in the coffin", "beginning of the end" and "dropped the ball" were terms used by android "fanboys" when the 4s was announced. Now of course, we're hearing "pent up demand", "holiday quarter", "dead quarter for android" and "margin of error"...funny how that happens EVERY quarter...

Did anyone say that Android is doomed?

It's funny how you don't add in your analysis, how the internet such as yourself was laughing at the 4s release... which makes this that much more impressive.

actually someone did pretty much say Google was going to disappear after a few more quarters

"Apple's share of the U.S. market doubled from a year ago to 44.9 percent in the October to December period, just beating Google's Android smartphones, which slipped to 44.8 percent from 50 percent."

BTW Samsung make most of the components in your cherished iphone.

You mean like the baseband modem, the LCD display, the glass casing, the metal parts, etc? None of them is made by Samsung.

Also AFAIK depending on your particular iPhone, Samsung might not even make flash memory. For example the one taken apart by iSuppli had flash memory made by Hynix, in that case only the A5 chip is supplied by Samsung.

next LTD and linux2mac will say there are no antivirus apps in the app store

if ios is the most secure, impenetrable, then this should not exist. yes?

Elcomsoft iOS Forensic Toolkit

I'm pretty sure everyone Android fan boy declaired Andriod the winner and iOS the loser. The fact that Apple was able to come back to being tied is a big deal, but a lot of us knew this was going to happend, you can find many comments of mine in the past were I told people to wait for Q42011 numbers....

Awesome numbers. Very impressive. Can't wait to see what a new redesigned iPhone 6 this year will tear up these numbers even more.

Good job Apple :D
