Didn't realize there were only 9 countries in the world.....

I'd be curious to see global numbers, not partial.

That being said, congrats to Apple (and those who invest in it) for keeping the momentum going.

Android is an entire operating system

How many years does Android need to create some competition? How many different businesses do they need to let develop hardware for Android? And Apple is gaining market share? from only one phone with subsequent models?

It sounds like your sense of self worth tired is directly to the success of iOS in some kind of weird Elliot/E.T. relationship.

My iOS device is wonderful, but my personal happiness doesn't depend on the OS market share of the device I use. You should try it sometime.

It's been a while since the infamous Blu-ray thread. Nice to hear from you again. ;)

Nice, but it probably won't last too long. The number of Android phones out there makes it hard for Apple's products to compete for sheer market share, given how little many people care about which phone they get.

LTD, you wanna overhype this and go on a quick rant/celebratory speech?

[I understand that all the people on here care about which phone they have, but in the real world, not many people do. They just care about smartphones, and while I try to steer them towards the iPhone because I think it's the best out there, many will simply go for the cheapest.]

In a nutshell you just said: 1. this is a commodity business, and 2. economies of scale don't matter. Which, by the way, typically are contradictory.

Apple slipped past Android by the narrowest of margins in fourth quarter U.S. smartphone sales, with Apple's iPhone taking 44.9% of the market and Android taking 44.8%.

wow. MR never ceases to amaze with how they can make the obtuse comparison between a PHONE and an OPERATING SYSTEM.

iPhone outsells ANY 'droid phone by a huge margin.

iOS outsells Android by a huge margin.

No news here, since Apple is already way ahead of the skewed numbers reported in the article.

Queue gleeful high-fives by Apple fans around the world.

I have seen lots of gleeful Android fanatics before, but Apple fans don't seem to be too bothered actually. iPhone always had the majority in revenue and profit, so nothing has really changed.

While the lead is unlikely to last for the next 3 quarters (although you never know…), this is a massive achievement IMO. I did not think Apple would ever come close to evening marketshare in any quarter with Android smartphones.

Here's how I see it: There is currently a huge conversion from dumb phones to smart phones. The cheapest price that you can get an Android phone for has gone down and down, and as that price goes down, dumb phones are converted to Android phones. That is why Android market share is growing, through the huge number of cheap phones. The Android growth is mostly not in expensive phones, but in huge numbers of cheap phones.

The iPhone on the other hand has stayed a high end phone all the time. So if you don't look at smart phones, but at high end phones, the iPhone market share has been growing all the time. So what happens when the price for the cheapest Android phone goes even lower? They will eat most of the dumb phone market, which gives the fanboys a market share to boast about, but it doesn't give the manufacturers any profits. Apple however will keep growing its market share at the high end.

false.

People know they want "the iPhone". My grandmother, who lives in Calhoun, Louisiana (not exactly on the map) made it very clear that she wanted "the iPhone".

My dad, who doesn't even own a laptop, bought the iPhone.

It has 99.9% mindshare, and that's important.

With competing manufacturers, no Android phone will ever have that sort of mindshare

Those numbers are ridiculous.

Also I doubt this will last unless the iPhone 5 is a game changer (which it very well could be)

Here is the original Kantar report

Reuters reports on new data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showing that Apple slipped past Android by the narrowest of margins in fourth quarter U.S. smartphone sales, with Apple's iPhone taking 44.9% of the [U.S.] market and Android taking 44.8%.The results, driven by Apple's blockbuster quarter in the wake of the iPhone 4S launch, saw Apple double its U.S. sales share year-over-year while Android slipped from its 50% share a year ago.

Apple clearly worked hard to bring iPhone sales even with Android sales in the US for this last quarter.

Waiting 18 months to update a phone, then bringing out the new model during the holiday season (while simultaneously selling older models as low as 99 cents in the U.S.) was a very good strategy to get a short term record sales burst.

Apple yesterday reported sales of 37 million iPhones during the quarter, far exceeding expectations.

Okay, now we're back to talking world sales instead of just the USA. Android is still far ahead in world sales totals, while Apple's holiday burst gave it at least temporary acceleration.

In the quarter previous to this one, worldwide Samsung sold 28 million as compared to 17 million by Apple. This quarter, Samsung alone will be almost even with a predicted 35 million vs 37 million by Apple. Obviously those figures don't include all the other Android phone makers' world sales.

For those interested, here is the original Kantar media report (which of course is simply a way of getting free advertising for their product via the press):

Android retains global smartphone crown, however Apple is now growing at a faster rate.

Apple’s iPhone 4S launch has helped the company regain global momentum with the US driving growth, according to new data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. In the latest 12 weeks of sales*, Apple’s share was at 44.9% while Android took 44.8% of the US market. Apple also increased its share of the British smartphone market from 22.0% a year ago to 34.0%.

Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director, explains: “Apple has continued its strong sales run in the US, UK and Australia over the Christmas period. Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover.”

Windows 7 is yet to break past a 2% share in any country despite the media attention gained by the new Nokia Lumia range. The Nokia Lumia 800 finished quarter four just outside of the top 10 smartphones sold in Great Britain.

Dominic continues: “BlackBerry remains the brand of choice in the smartphone gifting market, 57% of BlackBerrys were purchased as gifts in quarter four. This rose to 76% during December and a whopping 55% of recipients were under 16, indicating BlackBerry’s hold on the UK youth market.”

Looking at Latin America, it is clear that Android is starting to make a big impact. Although the smartphone market is still in its infancy, Android took a 28% share in Brazil and 20% in Mexico.

Dominic Sunnebo comments: “Brazil and Mexico have a combined population of over 300 million, meaning that the mobile opportunity is huge. By staking an early claim on the smartphone market in these countries, Android is laying important groundwork for future sales from the increasingly affluent middle classes. Over the next few years, Asian manufacturers such as Huawei and ZTE are likely to focus smartphone sales on these regions. Their ability to offer prices under $100 will be crucial to their success.”

In Great Britain, smartphones made up 70.7% of sales over the 12 weeks, meaning that 48.9% of the British population now own a smartphone.

When considering a brands performance, it is important to bear in mind that all countries covered in the survey are experiencing strong Smartphone growth, meaning a share decline does not necessarily correspond to a drop in actual sales.

Going with 3 price points was a genius move by AAPL.
1 dollar Iphone 3Gs
100 dollar Iphone4
200 dollar Iphone4s.

Its much cheaper for Apple to manufacture just 3 models then Androids thousands of Models. Today its really a 2 race between Apple and Samsung.

Nerds needs to understand that the Software on the phone, makes it the phone. Not the processor, memory, graphic card, megapixel and so on. Mass market does not care as long as its good enough.

The real fun stuff will happen with iPhone 5 and iOS 6. The entry iPhone will be a retina phone with A class processor. Since all Apple hardware is the same Apple can accelerate the OS something I thought was impossible for Google since they don't control the graphical layer. (Google have now accelerated Android4 with OpenGL). As soon as A processor is the minimal Apple processor programmers can start to use the NOVA SIMD to accelerate all stuff.

iOS6: 3D GPS maps and NFC.

The numbers are insane. The previous smartphone record was about 22 million in a quarter. Apple almost doubled it. And Apple had a back log!

How Apple manages to manufacture 37 million phones are amazing. No wonder that FoxConn is constructing a new Apple factory with 250K workers. They need to crank out hundred of phones per minute.

What's funny is now Android doesn't even have marketshare to boast about in this quarter LOL...what's...left?

[SNIP] This was sales for the quarter and not market share [SNIP]. And fourth quarter is usually the worst quarter for android because CES is around the corner and everyone is waiting for the next quad-core device. I have no doubt that Android will regain it's market share to over 50% and that their sales per quarter will return to its norm. I'm not hating against the iPhone or anything im just stating facts.

Can you imagine if the more developed countries were more welcoming to industry? The amount of jobs that would come back to the US/UK/Canada would be amazing!

Wow, this is scary!

The iPhone doesnt even have a larger screen yet. But booooy when it does.....

This is pretty insane when you think about it, considering the iPhone is one model (well 3, technically) by one company, while Android is installed in almost every single phone that ISN'T an iPhone, spanning hundreds of models by dozens and dozens of companies. The fact that iPhone is keeping up with sales of every android phone combined, and even exceeding, is unbelievable.

Ruh row....what are the fandroids going to do now....
Android will probably be back on top of shipments in the next quarter, they'll wait til then.

This really shows the pent-up demand that existed for the new iPhone.

What's funny is now Android doesn't even have marketshare to boast about in this quarter LOL...what's...left?

You Apple fanboys just need to shut up. The only reason Apple sells more products is that Apple makes better stuff. If Android phones did not bite the big pickle, people would buy more of them.

Apple, you need to get off of this quality thing you have going and make cheep trash like the rest of us!

The numbers are crazy. And it's definitely a testament to Apple for putting out quality products and having great marketing/mindshare too. It's pretty irrefutable.

However - there's one marketing bullet point being bandied about here which is simply that - a marketing point.

The whole "and they did it with only one phone" vs Android's "gazillion" models is a nice bullet point. But overall not, in my opinion, as important. Impressive - yes.

But when someone is buying a phone (let's forget RIM and Windows for a second and this discussion point) - they are either buying into the Android ecosystem or iOS. To do that - they have a choice - either the iPhone or any one of a number of Android phones.

It's a no brainer that iPhone will always outsell other Android phones because iPhone doesn't compete with itself. So again - you're either buying an iPhone or you're not buying an iPhone (and something else). The fact that there are dozens of alternatives doesn't really matter.

The factor that matters is that when people buy into Android - they can have a choice of form factors. For better or for worse. And I'm not saying it's better. Or worse. I'm simply stating the obvious fact. There's a choice. The odds in everyone wanting the same exact form factor/specs are astronomical.

"But they do that with the iPhone. Everyone who gets an iPhone has only one choice" True - but not everyone buys the same color or storage. And if the iPhone came in two screen sizes and/or other permutations - customers would be divided amongst the choices.

So again - I applaud Apple on their incredible quarter and year. Great numbers, sales, profits, etc. I just don't happen to agree with the single comment about "and they did that with just one phone" because I don't see that all too exciting - except as a marketing/bragging point which SOUNDS impressive - but really isn't all that (to me).
