HTC has screwed up big time - I hope they curl up and die in the corner for telling a large chunk of customers to go f-ck themselves after finding that they're left high and dry running an obsolete operating system on a phone less than a year old.

Dude chill, the phone still works properly even without the update. 2.1 is a very good OS. You're making a mountain out of a mole hill just to try to prove some obscure point.

Again, upgrading just for the sake of upgrading is not necessarily better. If 2.1 works fine and 2.2 would cause problem, HTC are doing you a favor leaving you with a working phone instead of a slow unusable POS.

Obsolete? What Android 2.2 features are you in dire need of - genuine question.

If you genuinely are in dire need of 2.2, root and install a custom ROM.

They will make money off Android users as long as they can, but they have already said they are going to move beyond Android. Your article does not contradict. When talking about financials, you always talk about what you've got right now.

I agree with you that time will tell.

Anyone wanna rip that Time Machine outta their Mac so we can go find out? :p

How about instead of lying you stick to the topic - "practically unusable?" based on what benchmark? being one of those annoying individuals who make their phone the centre of their existence? if that is the case I wish your phone spontaneously exploded so then you might actually converse with real people for once..

An excellent example of someone who takes this way waaaaaay too seriously.

dude, you need a chill pill. When you start wishing someone's phone "explodes", it's time to take a break.

My phone, often has anywhere from 3 to over 10 second freezes when I launch something. It doesn't happen with absolutely everything, but something simple as launching the camera almost always, takes 10 seconds before I can even try to take a picture. This is very common to many 3G users who upgraded to iOS4. This often makes it very difficult, and extremely frustrating to use. I ordered the iPhone4 from my carrier, but honestly, I probably would have waited but this is what happens as technology advances, you gotta upgrade to keep up if you want to run the latest.

Why people think Apple is any different is beyond me.

Better JavaScript performance, flash support, JIT rather than interpreter which improves over all performance, better battery life and so on.

On flash 10.1, you were never going to get it because the Hero doesn't meet the requirements for flash. Being a hero you should already have flash lite as mine used to.

On the others, why don't you install a custom Rom on it as you may see some improvements with it? Since rooting and installing a custom Rom on my Nexus One, I couldn't be happier with the thing.

I can't believe there's 10 pages of blah, blah...

BOTTOM LINE:iPhone is AT&T only. That's the only major factor preventing it from cornering the market. It's really not that hard to outsell a smart phone that's on only one carrier. The fact that iPhone hung in so long in spite of this shows you that it's the best smart phone. The fact that people would break their contracts with other carriers just to have iPhone shows you it's the best smart phone. People buy droid and Blackberry because they're stuck with it.

Everyone wants iPhone. When iPhone is available on other carriers, it's GAME OVER.

You are way to US based. iPhone is only limited in the US in the rest of the world it can go on ANY CARRIER and in that playing field Android is out selling the iPhone.

This would make a whole lot of sense if the figures were US only, but they're worldwide. In most other countries where the iPhone is sold, people can choose from a range of networks. The fact that Android based smartphones outsell iOS based smartphones even in these circumstances is testament to how well Android is actually doing right now.

You keep saying that. Do you have any numbers to show that Android is outselling iPhone in markets where they are on the same carriers? You may be right. I've just not seen any numbers that support the claim.

I don't think there are any as the marketshare figures are typically worldwide, or US only. So it's impossible to say one way or the other. However, I did read a news article a while ago that Android's growth in the UK market had quadrupled, whilst the iPhone's share had fallen. However, I think the iPhone share was so far ahead that even this quadupling wasn't enough to get Android anywhere near. On the other hand, it does seem to be a good indication of how fast Android is growing.

iphones are pretty much available on all carriers here in Canada, but I can't seem to find much in the way of sales numbers.I can tell you though, android phones aren't exactly being pushed here at all as far as my perspective is, I'm on rogers so I went to look to see what they offered and it's pretty pitiful they don't have the latest android sets at all. So you would think, iPhone would be just trouncing android here.

I have numbers

The rest of the world is a lot bigger than the USA.

Not sure how that refutes the fact that the U.S. is a "big chunk" of the market. His claim seemed pretty much like common sense.

AT&T activated 3.2 million iPhones in the 2nd quarter of the year. Out of 8.4 million iPhones sold in the quarter. That's a pretty big chunk.

The rest of the world is a lot bigger than the USA.

Agreeing with BaldiMac above me, major changes in the overall US smartphone marketshare would have an effect on worldwide numbers because if its sheer size.

A Verizon iPhone and enough demand/people switching could hit Android, especially as the USA is one of it's strongest markets.

I use both.. While I love the open feel of droid devices, I like all the apps for the iphone... unfortunately when droid catches up, it will be bad news for apple

What I'm getting at is that there seems to be an assumption made that Android growth will remain static until/if the iPhone appears on Verizon. Android has grown so much and so fast, both in the US and internationally, it would seem more probable than not that come the supposed availability of the iPhone on Verizon, Android could be leagues ahead already, making any gains based on the Verizon iPhone seem negligible.

I'd probably agree that if the iPhone became available on Verizon tomorrow, it would more likely have an affect on Android, and knock them back down to 4th place. But in 6, 12, 18 months time (?), at the current rate of growth, Android based devices would be streets ahead anyway that a few million iPhone Verizon users wouldn't actually make a difference.
