Apple has spent over $6 billion for original TV shows and movies for its upcoming Apple TV+ streaming service, set to launch later this year.

Apple originally set a budget of $1 billion for Apple TV+ execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who head up the project, but according to a source that spoke to The Financial Times, that budget has now grown to more than $6 billion.

Hundreds of millions of dollars alone have been spent on "The Morning Show," one of the most high-profile shows that will be a part of Apple TV+. "The Morning Show" stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell. Previous rumors have suggested that Aniston and Witherspoon earn $1.15 million per episode alone.

The cost for "The Morning Show" has apparently exceeded the $15 million per episode that HBO spent on the final season of "Game of Thrones."

Previous rumors have suggested that Apple is spending similar amounts on "See," an upcoming futuristic drama where much of the world's population has been wiped out by a virus, and the rest of the population is blind. "See," which stars Jason Momoa, is said to have a budget of $15 million per episode.

At $6 billion, Apple's spending doesn't quite match the $15 billion that Netflix is expected to shell out in 2019, but Apple is rumored to be offering more generous payment terms to help it win deals for appealing content. Apple is paying out earlier in the production process, "once certain milestones are hit."

Apple has said that its upcoming Apple TV+ series is set to launch in the fall, and the source that spoke to The Financial Times says Apple is aiming to launch it "within the next two months" to pre-empt the November 12 launch of Disney Plus.

There's no word yet on pricing for Apple TV+, nor details on which shows will be ready, but several have finished filming and appear to be in the final stages of production.

Apple has dozens of TV shows and movies in the works for Apple TV+, with a full list of everything that's known to be in development available in our Apple TV+ content guide.

Update: A separate report from Bloomberg suggests Apple is considering charging $9.99 per month for the service, which will include a free trial.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is aiming to launch Apple TV+ in November, and is still deciding how shows will be released. Apple is considering releasing three episodes of TV shows at once followed by weekly installments.

"The Morning Show," "See," "Amazing Stories" and "Truth Be Told" are said to be some of the first shows that will be available at launch, with Apple planning to continue to release content on a regular basis going forward.

I wish the best success for Apple 6 billion investment for original Apple TV contents. Personally, I never care about and watch any streaming service original contents. I hope those who like any original content streaming services, enjoy them :)

Why are they launch the same month as Disney+? Are they competing with Disney?
Disney and Apple have a long standing relationship. And with Disney using apples IAP it might be only a matter of time before both have a joint subscription. Time will tell.

Once again we see someone defending Apple saying remember the watch, homepods, iphone, etc. They said they would flop too. Lol

Let’s remember Apple had to hire a couple to do this since they have no experience. This isn’t an Apple made product. There’s no software + hardware story here. It’s just a desperate attempt at a revenue stream spending money they otherwise seemingly have no clue how to spend elsewhere. A panic reaction from slowing iPhone sales.

I’m reluctant to do subs. Sorry Apple. Atv wasn’t broken. But now atv becomes a bloated app trying to sell me stuff. It’s a downgrade in experience.

And once again we see people saying it will flop BEFORE it's even come out and been given a chance. Apple Music was software, they hired outside help for that, it hasn't flopped. Who knows what will happen, all I'm saying is at least wait and see before saying something will flop.

I use Apple Music, I love that fact that it's integrated with my iPhone, iPad and Mac. If Apple can do the same with Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ I will be happy with that.

Only $9.99/month.
Arcade only $4.99/month
Apple Music only $14.99/month
Oh yeah, Applecare+ is $14.99/month
You forgot all the apps you subscribe to. They are $23.99/month together.
iCloud 200gig $2.99/month
Apple news plus, almost forgot, $9.99/month

What did I miss? This is crazy...everyone wants just a few bucks/month. It's getting to be too much man...

So don't subscribe to things you don't want/see the value in? Choice for consumers in regards to such services isn't a bad thing. I certainly don't blame Apple for bringing these services to their customers.

I'll certainly check some of these out, especially if they are doing a month free trial. Whether or not that turns into a paying subscription remains to be seen. Doesn't seem like enough content to warrant $10/month?

Its long term before anyone can say that along with Apple unlikely making the right moves. For the next few years it doesn’t look worthwhile to me. Just noise and bloat in the atv app for now.

However I’ll say the same about Disney. Doesn’t look worthwhile for a few years. Not until they get some new content. They’ll rely on (part of) their existing library for awhile which I’ve no interest in or own already. I’m wondering if people are expecting too much here.

Uhhh plenty of people said the iPhone would flop because of the price and lack of features. People expected the competition to kill Apple.

Let history remind you the catapult for the iPhone was when they opened the ecosystem more by releasing the official App Store and negotiating with other telecoms like Verizon. Coincidentally, Cydia had existed before the App Store.

The same happened with the Mac in their transition to Intel CPUs

It’s easy for most people to assume they are successful at what they do just because they have the current products. However, it’s easy to forget what were the catalysts in their success.

As for Netflix I think their position is pretty good. They are the only global player (as of today) with a huge install base and their content strategy has been pretty good.

Exactly, has been. Currently their strategy is falling apart, they spend too much money without gaining enough new users to cover the money losses.

Netflix’s Original Content Strategy Is Failing

Let’s not forget that Apple have so much money to spend and they do lot of money all the time. Apple can slowly build their service as big as they want.

Netflix could be in big trouble soon, you know they already raised the prices because they are gaining less users and they need to get that extra money from somewhere if they can’t get new subsribers.

https://www.statista.com/statistics...r-of-netflix-streaming-subscribers-worldwide/ Here is q stats for Netflix growth, they only added 3 million subscribers last q, which is lowest since 2016. One start thinking what Apple TV+ and disney service would do for this growth. If they actually start losing users that would be very bad.

They would have been better off taking a large investment in Netflix. Bad move by Cook and these things happen when you have cash to burn.
Why would they be better off? Netflix is doomed.

I’m just happy that i sold all my stocks. I would do this now if I haven’t already.

Why are there multiple people in this thread saying they are happy they “sold all [their] stocks (plural).” It’s such a weird way of phrasing it that it makes it look like it’s one person with multiple accounts trying to affect the stock price.

In August 2007, a month or so after the iPhone's release, how well would we have been able to judge its eventual success?

I'm sure that Apple is committed to this for the long term - - not to do so would be leaving money on the table in this emerging entertainment industry model.

Based on his own early investment in Pixar, I believe he would indeed have allowed it.
The release of the iPhone was an entirely different case, since there was no competition. Like zero. Nada. None.

Netflix is about to go in the toilet with Disney and Apple+ if this price is true. I could get both for cheaper than the Netflix UHD plan, and I am sure the quality of content will smash Netflix.

I cancelled my Netflix already. Having binged on the only 2 shows I care to watch (Black Mirror and Stranger Things), I’m looking forward to signing up to TV+ and Disney+ as my main source of television.

I believe that the other shoe has yet to drop. Very typical of Apple to preview at WWDC then fill in the details with some announced features at the September event, closer to launch. Apple is clearly phasing out iTunes. iTunes movies and tv shows is the last remaining phase that has yet to cross over. Perhaps TV+ will include a preferred rental rate or if it’s really going to be $9.99, maybe it includes rentals, making TV+ more like AppleMusic.

This is going to be one of those legendary eat crow threads like the infamous iPod announcement thread.

Mods, can we please lock this thread down eventually so comments can’t be deleted when these naysayers are proven so massively wrong?

Apple has the resources, monetary, business and creative to build the next big media empire. TV+ is how it starts.

I don't think the naysayers will be proven massively wrong. Time will tell.

What was Gates vision exactly?

Gates and Balmer were expansionists. Gates in particular believed that each individual would have his own PC, and he fought to make sure it would be powered by Microsoft. First DOS, than Windows now the Cloud. Both at work and at home. Now in the Cloud.

Google is a threat to MS because they are also expansionists. They believe that everyone and everything will be connected in multiple shapes and forms. They want to make sure that they are the ones who power that connection. They started with Search, than went to Mail than the rapid expansion in mobile connected devices. Including connected to their AI.

Steve Jobs vision I believe it’s about making computing and than digital life simple to all people. He defied people to Think Different about what technology can be.

Tim Cook seams to be similar to Jobs regarding making products yet without the Think Different. He is a metrics guy when it comes to defining the next steps. The result is that he can only find a tendency when it is already there. The Caution of Cook and the Instinct/Impulse of Jobs made a great combination in managing the company between milking the cow and fundamental evolution.

The reign of SJ is riddled with examples of fundamental evolution even in spaces were there seamed to be already maximized. Take for instance the MacBook Air. It fundamentally changed the PC laptop space. The iPhone the mobile space. The iPad defined what a modern tablet is.

You would think that this was done in a long time. Well these products were introduced in a space of less that 4 years. I repeat 4 years (iPhone 2007, MacBook Air 2008,. iPad 2010) AI arrived to the mobile space with Siri, right after that, not to mention dit projection Airplay, 2011 (5 years).

This can only be possible with someone with a clear grasp we’re computing is going.

From 2011 onwards sure we got Continuity still with SJ in 2014, years ahead. Lovely.

But after that ... the watch came when competition had already one. AI evolution stalled, AirPlay evolution stalled, continuity stalled, iPhones followed Samsung bigger is better. iPad apart from retina and speed stalled. Problems in the Mac with customers accusing the company of neglecting the pros and alike. HomePod, let’s not talk about that, still no basic features such as actual digital radio stations across the globe. HomeKit is a mess. And we ear about triple lenses in the back of an iPad. And we have an Apple version of UWP.

Finally after 7 years it’s seams that iPad might evolve into something much more than a consumption device with iPad OS, who knows.

So you wanna compare 5 years of Jobs with 5 years of Cook in terms of product? They seam to have “invented” Apple Stores ... distribution. Hurray ... and prices went up. Apple became known has well integrated yet expensive devices and competition seam to be closing the gap on integration ... will see.

PS: And we have Ive out, somewhat complaining that he does not care about the product process as SJ did. This tells more of how Apple has changed than anything else.

Also free to watch.

News+ had many subscribers during its free trial. Now not so many.

The issue was using Carpool Karaoke as example of failed Apple show to bolster his prediction that no one would be interested in the forthcoming ones. Facts are otherwise.

News + subscribers has never been revealed, either as number of free trial or paying subscribers, so no one other than Apple knows how well or poor it's doing. Wherever you read "stats" should be considered fake news. All we know from stats released by Apple is that Apple News is now the largest news app in the entire world with last figures at about 100 million regular monthly viewers.

Steve Jobs legacy being pissed down the drain.
All that revenue from the past dominance of the ipod, iphone and ipad going to waste.

I guess they gotta do something with all that money lying around. There’s only so much stock you can buy back. I’m sure they get brownie points as this counts as increased investment in the US.

People paid $9.99 for CBS All Access and that only had one show: Discovery. (Now, also Twilight Zone).

A strong buzzworthy show is all it takes to get someone to subscribe until one is done binging. I don't expect subscribers to retain the subscription month to month like a Netflix, HBO, or Hulu.
No, CBS All Access had a bunch of CBS’ back catalog too. Apple doesn’t have a back catalog. It’s literally just those few shows.
